Eh, it works both ways. I think DevilDriver would really benefit from the occasional chorus or even cleanly-sung song, and a lot of other bands would benefit from (occasional) screamed vocals. Bands like Mastodon strike a good balance between clean vocals and screaming/growling.

I like power in my music, so someone who can scream musically is great. Magali Luyten, Matt Shadows, Rob Halford, and, yes, Roger Daltrey, are gods in this regard.
Jesus, yeah. Roger Daltrey is fucking amazing. I prefer melodic screaming to full-on growls/screams.

I hate screamer/screamo music, I really do, but I love Nirvana. Kurt Cobain most of the time seemed to make it work musically.

If there's no harmony there's no music. Anyone can scream into a mic.
+1 to this as well.

Some tit growling at loud volume into a mic does not good music make, neither does having nothing but loud bass while someone whales as hard as they can on a drum set. (Yea I know a lot of it is really hard to play, frankly you could get the best players in the world in one room, if the song writing was junk, it would still sound like junk.) Melody, harmony, rhythm, and dynamics all need to be there and far to many metal bands leave at least one out.

A few bands have managed to get it to work, and when it does it can sound fantastic. That however tends to be the exception rather then the rule.

I didn't use to mind it, but I think its because my brother loves that sort of music and is a metalhead so I probably got used to it. But after I moved out, I just think its quite unpleasant and hard to listen to.

Well, I love it. I think it gives songs power, which is how I like most of my music; powerful.
No way, that's how I like my toasters. Then again, my toaster can't sing at all. It tries though, bless it.

OT: I'm not a massive fan of screaming or growling, I love it when vocals are done beautifully, or filled with emotion without resorting to just making noises.

And the Gritty is Beautiful argument is admittedly a good one, but gritty can be achieved without having to spend all your money on Lemsip the next day.

Indeed. For proof of this, refer to Tool.

Not a particular fan of it. In my opinion, it just sounds quite annoying. But each to their own. I'm more of a fan of older rock-types. I.e my favourite band is AC/DC, followed by Iron Maiden and lots of others.

I prefer growling. Screaming just sounds so... weak. Sure, there are some that can pull it off without sounding ridiculous but growling is generally much more powerful.

Constant growling quickly becomes boring though. I prefer bands like Opeth, Wolverine (on the Window Purpose album) and Farmakon where they mix growls and clean vocals.

I always feel growling and screaming ruins a good song its only in incredibly rare circumstances I will enjoy it otherwise it just throws me out of the song.

It usually feels like theyre trying to invoke anger in songs when its used as well which can always be done with music or lyrics or both a lot more effectively and emotionally in my opinion.

I have got to say, The Fall of Troy. Particularly "The Dark Trail" which I am very much enjoying. I have never used spoilers, so wish me luck =]

EDIT: Sweet. Job done =]. Also, if you do listen to this, quote me and tell me what you think of it, even if you detest it.

I quite like it if it's done in rockabilly.
Couldn't agree more. Maybe you'll appreciate the Flat Duo Jets, my personal favourite band.
It would have been better if the guitar wasn't nigh on inaudible. You can't make out the riff half the time over the drums.

I like music featuring growling and/or screaming

Though I think its mostly screaming that I enjoy:

Personally I think a lot of uses of screaming and growling is done to cover up for weak vocalists, and/or to create a 'type'. It gets rather annoying. Ironically, the most angry songs I have heard have neither and are quiet lacking trashing or smashing.

However, I enjoy it when growling is done very well. Mostly as an intro, or when the song involves more than one 'singer', ie: a conflict between the devil and a human being.

There are a few groups I enjoy that employ 'harsh' vocals to a limited extent, and sometimes it's actually interesting (Sirenia springs to mind). Usually it's just an annoyance I suffer through because the other parts of the song are awesome though.

It's especially disappointing when you know the fellow/lady in question has a good voice. I don't mind so much if they do both in a song, provided the actual singing isn't heavily outweighed by the screaming, but I don't think I have any song in my collection that was just screaming/growling/grunting/what have you.

It strikes me as fundamentally broken when I see melo-death fans complaining if their favorite bands start actually singing more often - growling and the like should be something you use for effect, not the primary draw! Blargh.

Yeah, that's pretty much the only situation where I actually want to hear those 'vocal techniques' employed, as it makes an interesting contrast. Then there are vocalists who can modulate their voice to add a devilish 'screamy' quality without actually screaming, like the wonderful Jorn Lande did on The Devil's Hall of Fame (where I'm pretty sure he's singing as the devil, so that makes sense).

I love it even more than clean singing (although clean singing is still beautiful). Sure, it's not gospel from the choir of angels, but it makes for some damn awesome music. All my favorite bands have growling or screaming (In Flames, Dark Tranquillity, Children of Bodom). My favorite growlers/screamers:

I'm even gonna learn to growl myself when puberty's stopped messing with my voice.

Screaming is all right sometimes (I'm not the biggest fan)

I'm not at all fond of growling, but I understand that growling properly takes some actual skill in order to not wreck your voice completely, so when someone can do it properly I think 'man, I bet that takes some skill,' but that doesn't mean I like it.
