I prefer screaming over growling, but I really don't mind either, provided they're done well. Depending on the music, sometimes there is simply no better vocal alternative than a good scream or growl.

Fuck yeah, Disarmonia Mundi!

Yeah..I loves teh screams.
It's funny, I recall you posting this a few days ago, and now it's on my favorites list on Youtube. Thank you for that. :3
It's one of those songs that I am willing to find any excuse to post, I play it too often and it's still not boring :p

Besides, it's very relevant to this thread :D

And I'm glad that I've managed to enlighten someone else to the wonders of Disarmonia Mundi.

I quite like it if it's done in rockabilly.
Couldn't agree more. Maybe you'll appreciate the Flat Duo Jets, my personal favourite band.
It would have been better if the guitar wasn't nigh on inaudible. You can't make out the riff half the time over the drums.
Hmmm. I quite like the drums high in the mix. I have no doubts that this recording was made very cheaply(doesn't have to mean badly).

I'm a metal head so I like both. I don't limit myself musically. I used to be a nazi when it came to rap and country but I give then a chance now. I just hate when it sounds like ABSOLUTE shit. like:

Though I do like Napalm Death. ALSO shitty growling can be hilarious such as:

Sorry that just sounds hilarious, it's like a demon taking a shit at a carnival.

I like it when the singer of Dir en Grey screams into the mike. But I'm no fan of growling.

It just adds to the atmosphere.
What kind of atmosphere are we talking about here? Because I can't find any in that music. Except anger, probably fake anger at that.

In Flames, John 5 and Steve Vai...good choices indeed. I admit to not knowing Engel before now, although that was rather good too :p

well, i like the occasional scream or growl but Trivium is the most scream/growl band i listen to.
i love proper vocals. i mean if a person can sing, they should not growl or scream - its gonna kill their voice

In most cases I think random screaming and shouting takes away from the music as a while, and it just feels completely out of place in most cases. That and I just personally find it a bit abrasive. It also really disappoints me when a band randomly starts to throw in screaming in new music when they never had it before.

I'm a subscriber to this kind of philosophy--

All art shouldn't be "pretty". Some art needs to be harsh, violent and even ugly to get the message across. If that's not your cup of tea, then don't listen to it.
If they can actually scream or growl with the best, then by all means, go ahead. But if the singer's vocal talent only amounts to a whiny "GAHH" or coughy Cookie Monster growl, then I could not be a fan.

Example: Rody Walker. He blends his screams into the music with his super amazing clean vocals, and I couldn't like his style more. Conversely, let's take, say, Brokencyde. Their screams are crowbar'd in at best.

I like some screaming and growling, but only if it's accompanied by singing. I can't stand songs where all they do is scream and growl.

If there's another topic like this, my apologies. I'm a little strapped for time and didn't feel like going through the tedium of searching for a similar topic.

Common to much of today's rock, "rock," and metal is the vocal styling of ripping your own throat to shreds via the production of uncomfortable noises. I'm talking about screaming. And growling, for that matter. When it comes down to it, I can't stand either, except in extremely particular circumstances. In fact, I can only enjoy them when they're done for comedic effect.

It's also a shame to hear how some of the singers who do this crap have exceptional singing voices. For example, Howard Jones of Killswitch Engage has a marvelous singing voice. If he didn't scream and growl like he did for their songs, I'd immensely enjoy that band's music. However, those noises just kill it for me.

So what do you think of growling and screaming in music?
I'm fine with it, so long as it fits the music. If someone is screaming in pop music, then there's a serious problem....

Bat Country's opening scream is wicked. Same goes for Beast and The Harlot.

Bruce Dickenson's vocals can't be beat.

I'm typically not a fan of screaming, but when they're is a mix between singing and screaming that works well then I really enjoy it. Take Dillinger Escape Plan. They have good mostly scremy songs.
And they have good mostly singing songs.
I usually don't listen to music with a lot of screaming or growling in it though and can appreciated talented singing a lot more than growling into a microphone.

Love it when it's done well.
Some bands that come to mind are August Burns Red, Parkway Drive, Bring Me The Horizon, The Red Shore.
That sort of thing.
