I prefer screaming over growling, but I really don't mind either, provided they're done well. Depending on the music, sometimes there is simply no better vocal alternative than a good scream or growl.
It's one of those songs that I am willing to find any excuse to post, I play it too often and it's still not boringArkhangelsk said:It's funny, I recall you posting this a few days ago, and now it's on my favorites list on Youtube. Yeah..I loves teh screams.
Hmmm. I quite like the drums high in the mix. I have no doubts that this recording was made very cheaply(doesn't have to mean badly).maninahat said:It would have been better if the guitar wasn't nigh on inaudible. You can't make out the riff half the time over the drums.Sexual Harassment Panda said:Couldn't agree more. What kind of atmosphere are we talking about here? Because I can't find any in that music. Except anger, probably fake anger at that.Furburt said:It just adds to the atmosphere.
Know how it is, I too have songs [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OhnUtEGg58k&NR=1] that I find excuses [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sJ_N9fhqtzU] for [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G7b-_YcACuQ] posting [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BGZ1_ouh2sw]. >.>The Maddest March Hare said:It's one of those songs that I am willing to find any excuse to post, I play it too often and it's still not boringArkhangelsk said:It's funny, I recall you posting this a few days ago, and now it's on my favorites list on Youtube. Besides, it's very relevant to this thread
And I'm glad that I've managed to enlighten someone else to the wonders of Disarmonia Mundi.
In Flames, John 5 and Steve Vai...good choices indeed. I admit to not knowing Engel before now, although that was rather good tooArkhangelsk said:Know how it is, I too have songs [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OhnUtEGg58k&NR=1] that I find excuses [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sJ_N9fhqtzU] for [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G7b-_YcACuQ] posting [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BGZ1_ouh2sw]. >.>
If they can actually scream or growl with the best, then by all means, go ahead. But if the singer's vocal talent only amounts to a whiny "GAHH" or coughy Cookie Monster growl, then I could not be a fan.Housebroken Lunatic said:All art shouldn't be "pretty". Some art needs to be harsh, violent and even ugly to get the message across. If that's not your cup of tea, then don't listen to it.
I'm fine with it, so long as it fits the music. If someone is screaming in pop music, then there's a serious problem....-Zen- said:If there's another topic like this, my apologies. I'm a little strapped for time and didn't feel like going through the tedium of searching for a similar topic.
Common to much of today's rock, "rock," and metal is the vocal styling of ripping your own throat to shreds via the production of uncomfortable noises. I'm talking about screaming. And growling, for that matter. When it comes down to it, I can't stand either, except in extremely particular circumstances. In fact, I can only enjoy them when they're done for comedic effect.
It's also a shame to hear how some of the singers who do this crap have exceptional singing voices. For example, Howard Jones of Killswitch Engage has a marvelous singing voice. If he didn't scream and growl like he did for their songs, I'd immensely enjoy that band's music. However, those noises just kill it for me.
So what do you think of growling and screaming in music?
