I really like the female vocals as well.
Check out the Noisettes if you have the chance, you might like them ^_^

I prefer male singers because I feel their voices are a little more expressive; also, I prefer the lower vocal range males can usually hit. A huge exception is Flyleaf. Lacey's voice is very high-pitched and childlike, but it's beautiful. I used to also like Evanescence, but their new stuff isn't as good as their debut (I'm assuming that's because everyone except Amy Lee was replaced). I also like a couple of songs by Lacuna Coil.

But the vast majority of bands I love are led by men.

Female.

Good examples include Epica, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The Distillers, Nightwish, YUI, Lacuna Coil and Within Temptation.

I started out on rock music, a mostly male dominated industry and slowly moved on to indie rock, a more gender equal landscape. And I realise, that female voices actually appeal to me more.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Patti Smith, Long Blondes, Tilly and the Wall, Earlimart, Cat Power(!), Camera Obscura for some examples.

I still hate Sade though, nothing to do with the singing I guess

What are your thoughts?
Anyone who moves from rock to indie is a traitor in my book.

My ears prefer male singers in most genres. I don't think female singers are worse, they just don't really work for me. I guess their vocal range is smaller due to difference in vocal cord, and generally higher than what I like. Some female voices can just pierce my brain and cause havoc. :p

Mixed opinions. I generally prefer male singers, but if you have a fantastic blues female singer, it can be the single most sensual thing ever.

My best example is a trio of female singers I know from a karaoke night. They often perform a cover of Black Velvet. when it's average it's still phenomenal, but when they pull off a fantastic perfect performance it damn near becomes an orgasmic experience.

But a further caveat, this pretty much only applies to blues singers and very good rock singers. For general other types of music I still prefer male singers.

Depends on what I'm after. I have yet to find a metal band with a female lead singer that appeals to me (excepting all-female tribute bands like Lez Zeppelin or The Iron Maidens, they entertain me certainly). Conversely, I do like rock bands with female singers (Blondie would be a good example there. I fucking hate the noisettes though...)

Depends on the type of music.

For those ambient, electronic, and/or calming music you'd hear just watching the flowing field or gentle aquatic life, I'd prefer a female. If a male, I'd rather he not sing but speak in a way that works with the music/scenery.

However, if it's reggae, rap, some other harder stuff and so forth, I'd prefer a male.

Shirley Manson, Michelle Branch, Bonnie Tyler, Alison Krauss, Kim Ferron, Donita Sparks, Sarah Bettens, KT Tunstall... Hell, even Joss Stone on a good day (like, before her second album).

Yeah, I much prefer female vocalists

I usually prefer male vocalists, but for some bands the female vocalist works well.

For example, Beth Gibbons for Portishead or Carah Faye Charnow for Shiny Toy Guns are both awesome.

i think it really depends on the song and the singer too.

the fact that i know both of them has nothing to do with the fact that i think they're awesome singers. i actually know a few female singers that i think are crap, tho i think it's more to do with the music they play cause it's crap

Female by a million miles. I can't really say why, just always have. Doesn't help that most male singers these days like to sing in really whiny voices.

Of course, whether they can actually sing is the major factor in whether I'll like them or not.

Let me answer your question with a rhyme:

I have a thing...

For girls who can sing...

And that's about as poetic as I get, folks. Really, though, I guess it depends, but I just happened to enjoy more female singers than male. Hayley Williams, for example. And, even though I don't really like the music itself, I think Taylor Swift is a great singer.

Oh, also:

I've never heard of those four bands, but I enjoyed all of their songs... could you PM me reccomendations for albums from them?
