Well, now that Kingdoms Of Amalur: Reckoning (a game that I've been looking forward to for a while now) is out, I've decided I might get it. However, I also want Skyrim (I loved both Morrowind and Oblivion) and I can only get one of them. So? Which one should I get? (I will probably end up getting both, but in that case which should I get first)

Skyrim. Amalur has good highs, but also awful lows. When Skyrim is low, its at least mediocre...

Besides, if you loved Morrowind and Oblivion, I don't know why you ask... you have your answer right there.

Great! I was all set on picking up Kingdoms today and now you got me thinking about Dark Souls.

I've always appreciated a challenge in my games but am unsure which one is worth my time. I'd just like to point out that now I'm conflicted thanks to you.

Don't be conflicted. Once you play Dark Souls, you will save alot of money because there is no RPG that can match its combat and you will get quickly tired of combat oriented RPG's. Not only that, but Dark Souls is a huge time sink. There is nothing like your first time though.

I'm not the biggest fan of Skyrim, but I'd still say it's better than Amalur.

That said, Amalur is a decent game too.

That, or Witcher 2. Depends on whether you're a PC or console type of gamer :)
Gosh, we are so RPG master race bro.

+ Infinity.

But let's assume the OP has both. I think it comes down to the type of RPG he wants. Reckoning will be a little more traditional in terms of progression and questing. Skyrim is of course a huge, open world rpg almost like "choose your adventure". I wasn't impressed with the Reckoning demo, but I think it will appeal to a lot of people more so than Skyrim.

I haven't played Amular yet but I'd recommend getting that. My reasoning is that since you have already waited this long for Skyrim, you may as well wait for them to release the first expansion pack and then buy the version of the game they will release that has it for free.

Edit: Or Dark souls. That's a pretty good game. I rented it and hope to get it at some point so I can finish it.

It's a choice between poor gameplay or poor graphics, in which case a gamer should still go for poor graphics = Amalur.

Amalur and Skyrim are very compareable on most levels:
-unoriginal
-fetch quests
-little choice, less consequence
-stupid NPCs
-mediocre to bad voice-acting and writing
-mediocre animations
+big
+character customization
+crafting

The difference:
Skyrim has pretty scenery and the character can jump, but the combat is unresponsive and crap.
Amalur looks cartoonish, but the combat is okay.
Skyrim also does level scaling, which takes some of the fun out of character progression.

While I do enjoy Skyrim I would still get Amalur first. It's much more fun and the art style actually has STYLE. Skyrim tries far too hard to be "realistic" in my opinion and it makes the game look generic. Pretty but generic.

Played the demo of Amalur today, and from what was there it seemed okay. The combat was pretty decent, and I actually rather liked the art style. It's nice to see publishers taking a risk on new IP's, even if that publisher is EA. Of course, I only played the demo and I've played all of Skyrim. Skyrim is a fun game, not much else to it but that. The story is still pretty bad, slightly better than Fallout 3/Oblivion by Bethesda standards, but still pretty bad.

I don't think I'll buy Amalur at full price though, can't afford the 60$ right now anyways.

Still, I'd pick Dark Souls over them any day, but this isn't about Dark Souls so I don't know why people are bringing it up.

Amalur. The combat is much more satisfying and fast on that game. The combat on Skyrim feels sluggish by comparison.

I played Amalur's demo. It seems like a large portion of Fable (1, I haven't played the others) with some Dragon Age (the first one, again) thrown in. Not bad but less than what I expect an Elder Scroll title to offer me.

If you liked the previous games, I'd suggest getting Skyrim first. Besides, it's 33% off right now on Steam. And that is because the Creation Kit came out, so you you know there would be lots of mods coming out soon. That's part of why I loved Morrowind/Oblivion - you can mod them to your heart's content.

Skyrim probably has more going for it in the long run, especially with the very active modding community; not to mention the Creation Kit was finally released the other day. I'm not far enough into Amalur to say whether or not it's setting is as rich and expansive as The Elder Scrolls series, but let's just say it's very unlikely that it does. But yes, Skyrim is more than likely to be the game with more value; nevertheless, both games are quite good in their own ways and certainly worth picking up at some point.

Still, I think it's probably worth looking at the finer points to determine which you prefer.

---

Skyrim's main advantage (apart from the near-limitless possibilities mods can add to it) is it's sheer scope; it's a massive game, with far more content than anyone could reasonably expect out of a game. The level of interaction with the setting is another strength of the series, and there's countless random (and probably silly) things you could do. However, the actual gameplay can be rather lacking; while still much better than prior entries of the TES series, it has the age-old RPG problem of "meh combat".

Which brings us to Amalur's main strength -- good gameplay. Not top-notch gameplay, but certainly one which wouldn't be bad for a full-on action game. The best gameplay ever seen in an RPG, as EA's routine hyperbole would say? Not really, but much more fun than the majority of RPGs available. The one downside to the gameplay is that you really want to get a controller for the PC version (an Xbox 360 controller works fine, driver for it is a free download; if you only have wireless controllers, I'm not sure if a particular piece of hardware is needed or not), because the gameplay translates very poorly to the mouse and keyboard; at least Skyrim has mods to fix the issues with the PC interface. Anyhow, Amalur is more fun to play... but it's (probably) not the better overall experience in the end.

And since it was mentioned, there's also Dark Souls. Both of the above games get a little too easy, while this one does not; when enemies get tougher in the "New Game Plus" mode, little else needs to be said. This particular game has earned a lot of praise lately, and it's well-deserved. This is a game with a lot of challenge, and provides a sense of satisfaction when you overcome each obstacle; something very rare these days. However, it's the easily the most frustrating of the lot; this isn't exactly a "fun" game, but there's something intangible which makes those frustrations worth it in the end. This is a game which can never be outright recommended due to it's raw difficulty; but those who enjoy it, end up loving it. The (current) lack of a PC port may also put some people off, as it's only out on consoles.

---

Overall, Skyrim's best recommendation. The other two games are still worth picking up, or at least Amalur is; not everyone can handle Dark Souls.

They are both solid games. Amalur is more to my liking because I enjoy the leveling system and combat much more. Neither has a great story. Skyrim can be downright obnoxious with its dialogue repeated ad nauseum. Visually, it's whatever your preference is: Stylized "cartoonish" or realistic (well...as realistic as magic and dragons can be). Both have a ton of content, though Skyrim will probably have more for PC players (no one knows how much mod content Amalur will get).

And people, he is asking about Skyrim and Amalur for a reason. Recommend Dark Souls elsewhere.
