I feel in the minority for sticking to the main roads... :( It makes me feel safe! But every so often I'll get frustrated and go hiking through. I've made it a personal point to never fast travel for immersion's sake.

It also doesn't help that I know I won't find any cool special weapons.
This. So much this. Seeing as the best gear in the game is the Daedric outfit when enhanced properly and enchanted properly. As soon as I learned that and figured I already had the best gear the game had to offer, my interest in the game went straight down. Done with most quests, so don't see a reason to keep playing when I can't improve SOMEHOW.

But, I usually try to find a shortcut around it if possible. The mountain, that is.
I don't like to metagame, so I like to find special armor, and named weapons.

Also some weapons are just so badass.
I agree, there's plenty of badass weaponry! I just have a mental tendency to always try and get the best of the best, was the same in Oblivion and Fallout 3. Especially when playing on harder difficulty.

Plenty of that.

Also, probably searching through the caves / ruins etc. They're pretty interesting, a hell of a lot more than Oblivion's anyway.
HAHAHAHAHA.

Yeah, I always end up turning every rock upside down and going into any and all places I see on the way. Eventually I forget what the fuck I was doing in the first place.

Caves are my weakness. I just HAVE to go in them if I see one. If not I just up as mush up and around as possible.

That picture......its epic beyond all words.

Also, I'm a "Oooooh!!!! A cave :D!" person, so I takes me ages to get anywhere lol.

You can disenchant it and put the enchant on other stuff.
Which I recommend doing, as it's the only weapon enchant that fortifies smithing.
I put it on an iron dagger, and enchanted a new pick and named it Notched Pickaxe.
It allowed me to upgrade my items slightly more.

I fast travel whenever I can. So if there's a mountain in my path, it's because I can't fast travel past it.

I used to just try to get over it by repeatedly jumping and trying to "catch" myself on this overhang or that rock, but I've gotten tired of that. Now I'll typically just look for a path around/through.

Now that would bother me in a game like Fallout where the environment is just really bland and dull, but Skyrim's such a beautiful place that I actually don't mind taking the long way around.

I stick to the road. It's an easier path, and I'm less likely to run into overpowered monsters.
