Stormcloaks. I have a personal rule, actually. It says that I won't help people who try to cut my head off with a gigantic axe.
That rule has served me pretty well up until now.

the rebels' philosophy reeks of racism (especially towards non-humans such as myself, but also to most Non-Nords) and xenophobic attitudes.
I was going to side with the Stormcloaks, i even went to Windhelm with the express purpose of joining them, however when i got there i was pretty disgusted with their xenophobic behaviour (up until then all i had seen was brave fighting) but what i saw in the city made me think twice.. now i dont know who to support.

The Empire isnt all that great either, they're falling apart, they can be pretty ruthless with their executions and how they handle things (for example putting my good self on the chopping block for no good reason).. and Skyrim did get shafted with the Empires crappy treaty with the Elves... So for once its actually a tough decision, rather than in say New Vegas where it was pretty clear who was the bad guys.

I'm not really sure to be honest.

On one hand, the imperials banned the Nords from practicing their own religion because the elves don't like the idea of worshiping a human. On the other hand, the Stormcloaks seem like a bunch of xenophobic nationalists.

I kind of lean towards the Imperials, but I don't agree with them banning a religion.

Besides, I'm an Argonian, have you been to Windhelm? Dark Elves and Argonians are treated like garbage there!

For now, I'm not going to choose a side. I'll have to see what else each side has to offer.

I judged the factions based on their home cities

Solitude: Cultural hub of trading and art that is nonetheless a mini police state

Windhelm: Segregated, dilapidated sh*thole

I'm all for Skyrim independence but the Stormcloaks seem to be better fighters than administrators. After the inevitable second war with the Aldmeri, Skyrim will need a king who's more than just an idealistic freedom fighter.

I'd back Jarl Balgruuf before I backed Ulfric

I was with the stormcloaks until I came across a character saying that he was going to "help ulfric drive all the damned thieving elves and khajeeet scum from skyrim", not to mention the stormcloaks helping the absolute corruption that exists within the westernmost city. My character was a wood elf. This felt like he was spitting on my face, and so I'll kill both the imperials and the stormcloaks every time I get a chance, because they're both horrible entities. Honestly, I'm having more fun helping Daedra Princes and their politics with other Daedra Princes.

My self imposed backstory has made me favor the Stormcloaks. I have even killed a few Imperials I found being attacked by bandits. By making this decision, I have found myself actually hating Imperial sympathizer NPCs. Like the battle-born clan of Whiterun.
Playing as a Redguard light fighter, my backstory maybe puts me slightly in the camp opposing the imperials - if X wants to be sovereign/free, let them...

But what really did it was that the imperials wanted to execute me for no good reason, and that when entering Whiterun, one of the Battleborn guys had nothing better to do than to antagonize the new guy in town about some imperial vs. stormcloak fight i had nothing to do with!

Since he was being a jerk about it, and that was the second time in as many days imperials or their cronies behaved badly towards me, i then & there decided to help Granny Greybeard find her son. Again, the Battleborns know where he is, but refuse to give any hints??

I didn't chose to be Anti-imperium, the Imperium and their Cronies chose that for me!

I accidentally followed the Stormcloak at the beginning, but I'm siding with the Imperials now that I've learned Ulfric's modus operandi. Sure, originally I hated the Empire simply because that stupid ***** captain at the start wanted to execute me for simply being there, but then I realized she was just one stupid person, while the Stormcloaks are a group of them.

Ulfric's a racist jackass who thinks the Nords are the master race and gives fuck all to anyone else. My character is a Nord and I still find him a disgusting display of humanity. He killed his king simply because he could, and then got a bunch of racist asshats to follow him as the "one true ruler of Skyrim." He's nothing but a tyrant who says the things people want to hear.

Skyrim for the Nords, Liberate Skyrim from the "evil" Empire, boot all other races out of our country, they don't belong here.

It's racism and stubborness with a millitia backing it. Hell, from what I've heard most of the Skyrimers (Skyrimites? Skyrimians?) want the Empire there because they kept order, and a lot of these people seem not to particulalry care one way or another about an Argonian or Dunmer living with them. It made me even more angry when I came across Winterhold, Ulfric's city, and found that he only paid Argonian workers 1/10th of what he paid Nords, "Because an Argonian worker is only worth 1/10th the pay of a proper Nord worker," and that he made all the Dark Elves and other races live in a back alley slum.

The only thing that kept me from storming into his throne room with a Fireball in one hand and my Skyforge Waraxe in the other was because common sense told me his guards would swarm kill me if I took such a direct approach at such a low level. I'm sure at some point the Imperials will give me a mission to assassinate his bigoted ass. Can't wait for that, by then I'll probably have enough Magika to dual-cast Fireball and Chain Lightning multiple times.

I'm playing as an Argonian, and I chose to side with the Empire because of the fact that Ulfric is a major racist douche who just seems power-hungry behind all of his rhetoric.

As a Nord, my stance is this. While my homeland maybe Skyrim, I don't follow the Empire nor the Stormcloaks. Both sides are at fault, so neutrality is for me. If neither side try to make peace, I shall stop both sides at all cost.

As a Breton, native to pro-empire High Rock, I find it disgusting the sort of atrocities the Empire has committed since the 3rd era.
Executions for dissidents, runaways, and even petty thieves? No thanks.

The Stormcloaks seem to follow a "to each his own" mindset, so I'd go with their philosophy.

Honestly Ulfric is a racist dick. He wants any non-Nord to get out of Skyrim or die. Basically a Nord Hitler.

Imperials just want peace. They made peace with the Aldmeri dominion by banning Talos worship, but the ban wasn't even enforced until Ulfric started his whole civil war tang.

The Thalmor can suck it. The Empire is also planning for their eventual betrayal, and needs Skyrim to keep back the newly expansionist elves.

To each their own, unless yer not a Nord. Then you can go die.

The only imperial who was nice to me was the guy at the start, oh wait you are not on the list guy. All he could offer was that my remains would be sent back to my homeland.

I am playing an assassin who has to start in skyrim for botching her first job. So yeah don't really care about sides of the war, just want to be an honest assassin.

However the more I play the more I see abuse by the imperials and that sort of martial law isn't good for business. I may have to help the stormcloacks just to save my own goals

This. I'm playing an Argonian, and the racism and cultural divide is the number one worry for me if Ulfric took over. All the non Nord races would suffer (non human races the most). The Empire is a beacon of multiculturalism. Just look at Cyrodiil, the heart of the Empire. All of the races get along fine and everyone is happy with their neighbors. It is a melting pot of cultures. But if Ulfric takes over and his pro-national, anti-immigrant propaganda spreads, there will be problems.
Ulfric makes a perfect comparison with the rise of nationalism in the early 20th century. And we saw where that went.

I chose the Stormcloaks. The Empire was soundly defeated by the Aldmeri Dominion, and has been too busy appeasing their edicts and bowing to the Thalmor to build up a suitable army. On the verge of another great war, one they wouldn't win, they chose to pump troops in to Skyrim to solidify their rule. This is ultimately a waste of troops. Ulfric Stormcloak hates the Thalmor, and one of his main goals is to eventually take the war to them and secure freedom for those who are currently in the Empire. It would have made more sense for the Empire to give Skyrim to Ulfric, under the condition that he aids them in the future war against the High Elves (which he would). This way, neither the Empire nor the Stormcloaks lose warriors, and both of them are more powerful and prepared for war.

So in my opinion, the Empire caused the rebellion through bad politics, offensive rule, and as a meager and petty display of dominance. The Stormcloaks want to free Skyrim, and to end the threat of the Aldmeri Dominion.

While the Stormcloaks are somewhat racist and xenophobic, they showed no signs of wanting to kick other races out of Skyrim, it was more of a mistrust of Elves than a leadup to genocide. The revolution being aided by a Dunmer (in my case) would've also helped end that particular prejudice.

So I sided with Ulfric, because ultimately, I felt that it was best for Skyrim and it's people, and also best for the Empire, in the long run. Also he didn't try to have me decapitated.

Just want to ask the people who chose imperial. Have you forgotten that they are just lapdogs to the Dominion? Have you talk to any of those elfs? They are more racist then the Nords!. And I"m Argonian and Ulfric actually wasn't racist towards me. Yeah, he didn't trust me much but would you if outsiders cause nothing but trouble for your kind? With the high elfs coming in to destroy your religion, and tell you how to run your own country. Fuck that noise. I rather kick them out, rebuild Skyrim to its full glory and THEN take the fight back to the elfs. If we fight for the Empire, they just keep listening to the Dominion and be a little dog that they are.
