David is my favorite. I've only seen one season with Matt and while I don't have anything against him....other than that jawline....he's no David. I'll continue to watch once I have time and netflix gets more episodes.

Wow, The question and answers treat Eccleston as some sort of amorphous beast from a dimension that shall not be named consisting of a strange geometry which man can only dream of describing in its full complexity. I thought he was quite good really. Was it the ears that put you off?

Anyway, I pretty much came into this thread just to mention that. It's a versus thread with a loaded question- I probably shouldn't have posted at all, so I'm definitely not going to give an answer.

Don't feel emotionally connected to Matt Smith's doctor at all, that said I still find this latest series as in enjoyable if not more enjoyable than the previous ones due to the script writing and direction it's taken on under Moffat.

David Tennant. Still can't get used to Matt. Still need to watch the last 2/3 episodes of this series as well.

I prefer Christopher Eccleston because he way MY first doctor. It took quite a while until I warmed up to Tennant. And Smith? Meh...
Eccleston is my doctor!

But I have to catch up with the old doctors.

I just wonder if the doctor will be a kid somewhen. He gets younger and younger (in his appearence), maybe Doctor Who will be a kids show in the future...
This is exactly what I was going to say. o_O

I watched a few of the Eccleston ones and loved them. I didn't really watch any of the Tennant ones but am very tempted to go out and buy them. I've watched all of the Smith ones and absolutely adore him! I'm now actually a Doctor Who fan, thanks to him

I really enjoyed Eccleston's dark take on the doctor. I think the heavy themes that he provided are what the series needs to stop it from being too silly and keep it being relevant. That's my gripe with Tennant; he was a bit too wacky and 'out there' to deal with the more heavy themes of the series. Smith is a good middle of the road portrayal. He's not as dark and ominous as Eccleston, he's not as eccentric as Tennant, but he seems to flip between the two to suit the moment. He's not a particularly strong actor in any specific department, but he's flexible enough to juggle different aspects of his character, which is good enough for me. I'd rather have a jack of all trades than a caricature.

On the one hand, Tennant had "Human Nature/The Family of Blood," as well as "Midnight," "School Reunion," and "The Impossible Planet/The Satan Pit."

On the other hand, Smith had "The Doctor's Wife," plus "Vincent and the Doctor" and "The Lodger."

Tough choice.

David Tennant definitely, he brought a lot a lot of energy to the show and was funny, even when the storyline was a bit pants he could carry it through shear enthusiasm.

Chris was a classic, loved the guy and he played most of the roles of the doctor well and it was weird getting used to David, but once I had he was brilliant - simply because he could play any role pretty damn well. He could play the Doctor emotional, angry, funny every side that we liked. I dunno about Matt Smith yet, he seems to be reminding me of how Tennant started - you're not quite sure of him and have to get used to him yet, but shows plenty of promise.
This all considering he's got quite the different part to play now, with the change in management higher up.

If we're talking revival, as in post-1980s, then McGann. Say what you want about the TV movie (it was American, after all) but Paul was a phenomenal Doctor who deserved a better chance than he got.

If you mean RTD-era, well I give all three of them credit for shining in their respective parts. I'm not generally a fan of new-era styles but I think all three have done very well.

Probably Matt Smith, partly due to him and his episodes being written better and party due to him being a really funny character. I loved Tennant in the role and was rather sad when I knew the 2009 specials would be his last, but after three episodes with Matt Smith I completely forgot about him.

Matt Smith is by far the best in my opinion.

He just seems so much more likeable than Tennent.

Dont get me wrong, i loved all of them, but Smith just stole the crown for me.

Ah, the eternal question. I myself like Tennant the most, though I do still love Eccelston and Smith. Tennant provides a good balance between the seriousness of Eccleston's Doctor and the goofiness of Smith's.

I always thought that Eccleston was the best Doctor that reflected the kinda of dark past that he has, with him being the last of his kind an all. I always get chills when I watch the Empty Child and at the end he yells "Everybody lives, just this once. Everybody lives!".

Tennant was probably had the best run as the doctor. He got really great episodes. But I would say I liked him more as a general character, not specifically the Doctor. He was awesome to watch but I never liked him because he was playing a good doctor, like Eccleston was, but just that he was playing a really fun character to watch and hang out around.

Smith's doctor is really great and I like his way of doing it a lot. I kinda feel like its a mix between the last two. He has the intensity of Tennant while still having the qualities of Eccleston that I really like. I think he kinda gets bogged down by Amy though.

Btw, can I just choose Rory. Rory is awesome and I dont care that he isnt the doctor.

Every time I see a new doctor, I think they're the best, but really, what I love about Doctor Who is the fact that the main character keeps changing, as well as the main actor's portrayal of the character, so I loved Eccleston's detached 'why can't humans do what I say for one second' style, Tennant's sense of the doctor renewing his youth, and Matt Smith's returning to the old style of the Doctor being an eccentric scientist. If I were forced at gun point, I'd say Smith though.
