That's how I got my dad to quit. I sat down with him and we estimated the amount of money he spent on cigarettes his life.

He could have 4 cars as well as 12 copies of The Beatles 'Butcher Album'.

Yeah, he was a bit shocked.
Money alone didnt made me quit. i've quit when i realised that i had permanent yellow spot on my figuers that was still there after a shower. that, plus the money thing, plus the health thing, plus the fact that my wife dont smoke and that i had to go outside in the winter by -30 celcius to smoke because i did smoke inside...

all that togheter made me quit

This sums it up.

However, I personally find smoking distasteful, and secretly believe anyone who does has a lower-than-average IQ, or are simply very gullible to peer pressure.
i beg to differ, seeing as i smoke and i have an IQ of 124, according to 3 different tests, one of which taken through my school... and according to the Wechsler Intelligence Scales an IQ Score of 124 is classified as superior intelligence.

and it was my choice, not peer pressure.. in fact my friends discourage it.

The only time I ever really smoke is when I'm drunk on a night out and someone offers me one. If I was sober I probably wouldn't even consider it.

I don't mind if people choose to smoke, it's not my place to judge people's lifestyle choices, just as long as they don't expect me to fund them.

Aren't you being just a little judgemental here? I know plenty of people who smoke and are perfectly aware of the risks but do it because they enjoy it, not because they're stupid.

I have, only about six or seven in my life mind you. Personally it does not bother me in theleast, what bothers me is all the flack it has received, banning in bars - which is ridiculous - the constant commercials about how deadly it and etc. Either ban the product entirely ot shut up about it.

I believe bars and restaurants should be given the option and if you dislike smoking, you do not have to go to their establishment. I find it utterly amusing how people will cry how dangerous smoking is, yet see nothing wrong with downing a six pack in addition to god knows what else. Hate to break it to you mates however drinking is not much better for you. You are just poisoning another part of your body instead. It is called moderation, smoking a little will do little, just as drinking will.

Thank God, someone talking sense! It's not the government's place to dictate whether publicans can choose to allow smoking or not, fair enough if the owner states No Smoking but that should be a choice for them to make, not a bunch of hypocritical suits in Westminster (who, ironically, are still allowed to smoke in their own licensed bar. Nice one, eh, chaps? ;-))

Smoking puts your cells under oxidative stress, you age faster.

But interestingly, although I don't smoke, I don't hate the smell.
Especially when going to a bar or something, it is a necessary part to the atmosphere, somehow. Call me crazy.

I realize this. But my personal opinion on cancer sticks is not going to change. This would be a good time to accept that I said "opinion", and admit that others' opinions may differ.

I know what you mean. In the UK they have banned smoking in all public places. Great on buses and stuff, but in a bar or club, it just smells normal. Without it, clubs just smell of BO and other.... things.

Never contested it's your opinion mate, nor your acceptance of others'. Agree to disagree?

I'm just wondering about people's attitudes towards smoking. I personally hate it and have no idea why people would basically slowly poison themselves for a ridiculous price, when they could just buy some rat poison. Sorry, but that's my viewpoint. If you disagree, fine, everyone has a right to their own opinion.
What about an option for those who used to smoke, but have quit?

I tried it a couple of different times but found myself coughing up a lung. I haven't tried it since because to me its gross.

What's the difference between the poll options 'Yes, frequently' and 'Yes, often'?

I tried it when I was younger (read:stupider) and hated it.

I hate seeing young teenagers starting to smoke, especially when we all, or so I assume, know the 'bad' side of it.. But I can understand that it can be a source of stress relief and actual enjoyment for some people.

So.. I worry about my friends and family members who smoke, but they're not ignorant. And I worry about people who start smoking for the wrong reasons, like peer pressure and wanting to fit in.

I have no problem in general with people choosing to slowly kill themselves. It is not my buisness. But, I live in an apartment complex (2nd floor) and below us is a family of smokers. These people open up the slider of the back door and stand right there and smoke, making it impossible for me to have any windows open in my apartment. The icing on the cake of inconsiderateness is that there is a playground about 20 feet away with children almost always playing there during daylight hours.

To sum up my complaint: Smoke if you want, but I do not want to have to smell it and I do not want my children exposed to it.

My brother does here and there and I have to suffer through it. For some reason my body can't handle even the scent and I can't breathe anywhere near it. As a result, anti-smoking here.

I smoke when I'm drunk, though I'll occasionaly grab a toke or two off my sister when she has one in the car after work.

I do smoke splif though, so those kind of count, though I like to pretend they don't.
