Cigarettes are only addicting. They don't alter your mind like alcohol or mary jane it just simply kills you, ages you, makes you smell bad, gives you cancer, so on and so forth.
How odd...as if addiction enough wasn't a significant mind altering experience. Though...I've seen them affect extreme crabbiness in those

Hello,
I have noticed a large portion of you quoting me, so I decided I would clarify myself.

1. I do not smoke
2. I do not approve of smoking, yet I do not believe in restricting it for those that do.
3. This thread needed some form of counterargument, because it is incredibly biased. I understand that a large portion of people have bad experiences with smoking.
4. Finally, I do not know why people smoke, yet there has to be some benefit. If millions of people, maby billions, have been smoking since man created fire, there has to be some reason. Why do people drink or do drugs.
1. Ok.
2. Second-hand smoke. If one of your parents smokes for your entire childhood, your lungs are going to be affected. That's why we restrict it. It smells terrible, too.
3. All Right.
4. There is no benefit. It's just addictive as hell.
Spoken like a true non smoker.

Except for the addictive part, that's right on the money...However...

The attraction is simple and physiological, cigarette smoke chokes off your oxygen supply, thereby limiting the flow of oxygenated blood to the rest of your system, most importantly, your brain. Said lack of oxygen induces a state of calmness and mild euphoria, thereby making the shitty-ness of everyday life a little easier to take. At least, that's why I stuck with it for almost ten years.

I started when I was 19 and working at Wal-Mart...the stress level was higher than I could have ever imagined. I "officially" quit when my wife got pregnant with my daughter, but I still smoke at work; being a line cook, it's the only way you EVER get a break.
Really? Hmm...wonder why people just don't go around choking themselves then? Save a bundle of money not having to buy cigarettes anymore ^^'
Ligature marks. ;P

I'm 14, and I don't smoke. It just smells awful. I really can't see the attraction. I just suppose people do it because their friends say it's cool, then get addicted. About 40% of people I know my age smoke, but I really can't figure out why.

Nothing against smokers as long as they're not those bloody poser smokers. You know the ones, who drag in for an instant then blow out more fumes than you thought was even possible without lighting an inferno on your tongue? Waste of a good fag which my various smoking friends could have enjoyed.

I started smoking at 15 and quit about 9 months ago at age 23. I enjoyed smoking and still miss it, but its worth feeling a little more healthy and a little richer. Here is some advice from an ex-pack and a half a day-smoker to all of you anti-smoking activists out there: Please shut up. No smoker is oblivious to the health risks or expense of smoking. The fact that your neighbor's great uncle once got lung cancer will never make a smoker even think twice before lighting up again. The choice is that of the individual, and getting in their face about it will never do anything but annoy the piss out of them. As a quitter, I have vowed to never bother one person about their smoking habits, and the rest of you should consider doing the same.
