Poll: So apparently it's pathetic that I like 28 Days Later because I enjoyed Left 4 Dead

People like my older brother and some other jerk-off excuses for ?adults? would come to me when I?m playing a game or suggesting to them and say things like ?that?s pointless? or ?you?re a nerd? or some other stupid crap. And when I say that I know this good band or have seen this awesome film because of a particular video game, I?m told it?s ?pathetic?. Really? Have you even had any experience with making a simple game? a pen-and-paper game or something on Flash? or even a PowerPoint game? You think that games are easy to make? That their only purpose is gratification? That it?s ?silly? to be exposed to good films and good music from video games? Are you a schmuck?

My older brother seems to be fond of movies involving the Mafia, especially The Godfather Trilogy and Scarface, both of which came to my interest and became my own personal favorites relatively recently. Both are considered by many as art in the films industry. What sparked my interest is a well-crafted but nonetheless flawed computer game: Mafia: The City of Lost Heaven. I got exposed to good composers like Michael Giacchino and Jeremy Soule after I played Medal of Honor and TESIII: Morrowind. I?ve talked to several people on the internet who discovered the awesomeness of Rock N Roll after hearing a few licensed songs and pop culture references in video games. I got exposed to Tool, one of my favorite ?stoner music? bands, while watching a gameplay video on YouTube. Why does it matter which way I got exposed to these good forms of music and film? Are these the only media out there? Why are games said to be nothing more than ?play things?? Do these people understand how long it takes to make a game that can be finished in just a few hours? It took me weeks to figure out and make a game on Flash with two other people, and it can be virtually finished in a few minutes, and in just a few seconds if you already know all the ways to win it. Films and movies take effort to make, but so do video games. Watching a film, listening to music, playing a video game, those are all the same, and if you can?t get it, then you?re in no position to say that one medium is better than the other without even getting to understand them equally, and you should base any criticism on each individual motion picture, each individual song, and each individual game, and all of their aspects, and not just dismiss one piece for the medium it?s presented in.

Besides? My brother?s also a sports fan, and I know most of you are a fan of something too. What makes you any different from me? You?re also a nerd, just a different kind, but a nerd nonetheless. What if I told you that your constant fascination over UFC or the NBA are even weirder than my constant fascination for video games involving zombies? Think about it. You like watching half-naked men pounce each other in a cage, and sweaty men flinging a ball into a metal ring? And you?ve joked about questioning MY sexuality? LOL. The only reason I like killing tons of zombies or gangsters or Nazis is because I get the idea that I?m helping people by ridding them of flesh-eating zombies or taking on organized crime? or Hitler, which is something I doubt you can emulate while you jack off to men in jerseys.

Point is, there?s nothing wrong with trying to get into a different medium, or getting exposed to good songs or good films from video games, or any combination of the three. You might hear a good song from the credits of a movie, or a good video game from a song (I heard ?Still Alive? before I even know what Portal is), it doesn?t matter, and games are as much valid as a way of enjoying or learning or whatever as music and films. When something is crappy, it?s the problem of the piece, based on the tastes of the audience, not the entire medium.

To quote a rather infamous game critic: ?If being passionate about something makes me a nerd, then I would rather be that than the aloof, tedious, empty shell of a person that you are.? - Yahtzee Croshaw

(Just to clarify for UFC and NBA fans out there, I don't hate those two, I was just making a point... and I do like UFC. :D)

I don't think it's pathetic, off the top of my head I've been introduced to some fantastic songs from games like GTA and Saints Row.

Well, that entire concept is silly. I didn't even know that sort of mentality towards games and people who play them still existed. Moreover, don't most people in the developed first-world play some sort of video game?

Nerds and geeks make all the technology and medicine that's keeping us runnin', dang it!

I think it;s a good thing to be inspired to try different things through various mediums.. bands and movies from video games, what're wrong with that?

Blind Guardian did the Sacred 2 soundtrack.. and from Blind Guardian I looked up other bands like Entwine..
I believe the term is "broadening your horizons" and if you enjoy the band/film/game then all the better! More fun to be had :D

RAmen, brother. Well... I don't exactly live in a first world country (ahem), so people here aren't too interested in gaming other than just as... well, you know, playing games without it ever meaning anything other than an occasional waste of time.

Thanks for the welcome, I've actually been here for a while but I used my facebook account, I just decided to stop doing that and get an actual username.

I highly urge you to play San Andreas if you can, the songs on that - especially Radio X for me at least - are amazing.

Added to my list. All I've got is a low-end craptop, so what I'm usually looking for are older PC titles... *huddles in a corner, crying*

It's not pathetic you got into 28 Days Later because of Left 4 Dead.
It's pathetic that you like 28 Days Later at all. (Oh c'mon, someone had to)

Seriously, though. How old is your brother? 83?

No, he's in his early 20's, and he likes video games as much as I like to wake up without a signpost lodged in my spine in the morning... and I like that a lot. It's just that he's got a rather limited view on what games can be, and that it's something that seems perpetually lower than music or film in his own opinion.

"This subject matter interests me! And look; There's several different ways to delve into it!"
"Oh man, that means you're having fun. You suck"

Yeah, this logic is flawless. I have to go with your elders in that having fun stinks. What you really ought to be doing is whipping yourself and praying to Jesus for salvation because only puritans get into heaven.

Off topic: Is it illegal for puritans to enjoy sex? And if they are also masochists does that mean they can't whip themselves?

LOL I've never heard Tool labeled as "Stoner Music" before, always just Progressive Rock/Metal. But, yeah They're really good :) I've never been made fun off for playing video games before though or finding stuff I like from them. Maybe Yahtzee should yell at them for you lol he sounds like he'd be pretty intimidating :D I don't really take offense to being called a geek or a nerd either, but that's mainly because I am a geek/nerd. What you should do is stand up for what you like, don't take shit from anybody, and tell those jerk-offs to piss off!!! They clearly don't have what it takes to live in this modern day world if they make fun of technology. They're a minority. Nowadays the only way to learn about things are from the ways you have stated. Video games, internet, etc.

Their not all the same though. Their very different. Books require imagination and you to picture the world to your own ideas, films paint this but decent acting can transcend this difference and lead to deeper characterisation and the like. Games as the currently stand tread somewhere between film and books in that you can imagine (or play) the story your way, but only so far as the open-ness of the games code.

As things currently stand films and books are the best storytelling mediums (books probably slightly edge out in front due to what the human mind can imagine. It's why anytime a game comes out with a half decent story, we take notice as a sub culture(see bioshock).

For sheer entertainment purposes you are correct though.
I agree with that. Books are, for me, still the best form of story-telling and conveying an idea out there, but most people forget that we've already got good examples of games that go beyond the mere perception that games are just there to be played with and nothing else.

I only call Tool "stoner music" because a lot of my favorite songs from those guys make me feel like I'm floating in space and laughing at the faults of humanity and other mind-drama shit like that whenever I listen to them. lol

No it's not pathetic. It was through games like Resident evil that I like zombie films, especially by George Romero. I got into Voltaire's music, partly from my dad listening to the albums and also he was in The little rock of horrors episode from The grim adventures of Billy and Mandy. So next time your brother gives you grief just tell him to shut up, (or ignore him), whatever works for you.
