Guys, could i ask.

What happened to the world?

Im pretty sure people liked eachother once (maybe i played too much minecraft) but why are gamers getting such a bad rap?

The people that never play games choose our laws over them, how do they understand what is needed? anyone ever seen that GTA 4 news clip? (Cue American Newsreader shouting to camera "KILLING HOOKERS WITH DILDOS?!") how many of you actually beat a hooker to death with a dildo?.. ok, thats all of us, but still we arent monsters!

No-one buys Mass Effect and goes out raping women, no, they sit for a moment contemplating the moral choices they made and feeling slightly cheesed off that they didnt have a better ending after that epic boss fight.

what are your views of the gamers portrayal in the news?

Sometimes I feel gamers are starting to get over sensitive, though thats probably because i'm on this site.

Being a gamer myself I understand my grandma will probably not understand that pokemon is not going to make me go on a rampage, but why fight her.

The sad truth is, when her generation dies, it will all be better and its almost pointless fighting it now.

Games are the new rock and roll. Which is to say that we're awesome, and the old people are terrified of our beauty and awesomeness. Also, I couldn't answer the poll. I could totally answer the poll. No difficulties at all.

This is my consolation. The reason why I'm not screaming mad at all the idiots who denounce games and so on and so forth. They're all old, closed-minded people who will be dead inside of twenty years. Let's just let them yell themselves out until they reach the grave, and we'll all be better for it.

They don't hate all games, I mean look at your vast selection of "acceptable" games, anything by Zynga or Popcap, as long as it doesn't have a red pixel.

News companies know that sensationalism sells well, so head lines proclaiming games are evil not only attracts attention, but give the public a clear figure to hate. In most political news stories the 'bad guy' is not so clear cut, and dosn't attract as much intrest as other more narratively pleasing ones. Clear black and white goodguys and bad guys make for a better 'story', and so sells better.

It's not rape if you yell: "Surprise!"

Seriously though, It's like the guys from Extra Credit always say: games are a relatively new form of art (in the broad sense of the word) and have had a huge impact in society in a very short time. Just like photography before it, games will not be accepted into everyone's culture just like that.

Right now, for a lot of people, games as a medium is still something strange and alien - and many people fear the unknown. Stuff like that is just pure gold for the media, so naturally they're going to take advantage of it.

I say, wait another two decades, then see where we stand...

Right you are.

Gaming has barely been around for a century. Many users on this site were probably 9 years old when they got their first eight-bit. New things take a while to nudge into common place because of how stubborn the human brain is to change.

And I'll bet that outside of the nutjobs who obsess over the newest "*insert anything here*-is causing people to become rapists/high/cancer patients/murderers!!!"-story, people don't care about how gaming is bad or good.

I would like to point out I sort of lost a job because I stopped (and beat the fuck out of) a rape-in-progess. The guy who was the rapist did not play video games.
Though that was 6 years ago so maybe things have changed and everything is all backwards.

I kind of want to walk up that stupid psychologist and say "see these scars? a Rapist-non-gamer did that!"

Love the poll btw.

The thread title rhymes. I approve.
OP: I thought playing games (in the eyes of the blissfully ignorant media) was supposed to make you a monstrous mass-murderer with an insane hatred for hookers. It'd be nice if stereotypes would at least stay consistent, but maybe that'd be an oxymoron?

I think that people need to find a middle ground. Gamers, especially those who play online multiplayer, have a well deserved reputation for being just about the biggest assholes in the world.

As we all know, not all gamers are like those teabagging people with a desperate need to unleash their rage through pixelated guns. Most of us are fairly decent people. Look at all the charity work and such that Extra Credits talks about.

Gamers are sort of like any group, there are the loud and annoying minority that makes the rest of them look bad. Not all liberals are pot smoking, tree hugging vegetarians. Not all conservatives are gun toting, giant truck driving, televangelists.

When people realize that it's not videogames brainwashing people into violent acts, but some other issue going on, I'll be very happy. Of course, I'll probably be long dead by then.

Ace: Yes!

Angel: Oh dear Lord no!

Luigi: Um, games have become more 'inline' with your average Joe. All he high school hot-heads became old and decrepit and nerds became part of the bigger industry. Hence, the growing generation of gamers now.

Also, ironically enough, while Nintendo inserted the casual gamer from your average Joe into the demographic of gamers, this ended up backfiring to the other side of things (I'm surprised Extra Credits didn't pick up on this). Think about, your average non-savvy gamer will think that games are supposed to be engaging in the 'toys' area of thing, and as soon as they see a game more violent then GOW or has any type of sexual attribute such as ME, it's out of line.

We had some pretty disturbing games before even ME hit the market...
