Lord of the Rings all the way. Then again I never liked Star Wars. No matter how much you shove it down my throat, Star Wars just doesn't do it for me... lightsabers are cool though :p

LotR - awesome book!
...while the SW books were rather... not so exciting, and the movies are (entertaining, don't get me wrong here) popcorn-cinema

They are both equally overrated by many people.
Star Wars episode 1 is the best, so I just pick that.

Original Star Wars or LOTR...

Tough call. Both are really, really, really f*cking good.

In the end I've got to go with what I roleplayed the most as a kid and Star Wars wins this handily.

Star Wars. Even though Lotr looks very impressive, and is also very awesome, the Scifi charm, the robots, the aliens, it makes Star Wars much more spectacular. I also grew up with it, and I remember all the lightsaber(stick) fights we had, and all the gunfights too.

Star Wars for me. Just prefer sci-fi to fantasy, and I'm not a fan of nearly four hour movies. Though Lord of the Rings is good, I've only watched the films twice each (once in theater, once on DVD). I'd watch Star Wars over and over as a kid. And I still watch them pretty regularly.

LotR was the movie series of my youth.

SW wasn't. The first movie of the new trilogy came out when I was a small kid (I think, I wasn't even interested in it, so I don't remember the year), while I was already in school when first LotR movie came out.

Yes, I prefer the Star Wars EU to The Hobbit, what of it? :p
Out of curiosity, have you read the Dark Empire series?

Apples and oranges, my friend. Apples and oranges.

Lord of the Rings is scripted well and was well performed, but it's a fantasy epic that revolves entirely around a small group of individuals, which isn't much fun for creating OCs if you like to come up with head-canon. Not to mention that the books are far less accessible than the movies.

Star Wars takes place in a large galaxy with events bigger than the main characters. Oh sure, those main characters are at the center, but the events are still bigger than them. Much easier to come up with original stories, which can be added to the Expanded Universe. However, bad acting and writing persists across all six movies (though seeing the action sequences in the theaters is the most awesome thing ever).

The Lord of the Rings, definitely. I could go on and on about why I like it, but i'll save you a TL;DR. LOTR was the first "large" book series I read, way back when I was eight. And I loved them. I have been an avid Tolkien reader ever since.

But I do like star wars, at least the original movies.

LOTR- Star Wars prequels were abysmal (save for maybe Revenge of the Sith)

Lord of the rings mostly because I prefer fantasy to sci fi (usually). The story of lord of the rings is just better you can tell Tolkien put more time into his masterpeice, than George did to Star Wars.
Plus the fans of lotr are not even in the same league of weird as the Star Wars ones are.
Google Star Wars fan you will see what I mean.

I freaking hate this question. The only thing brings these two series' together is the fact that they are both fantasy. That's it. Different characters, different motivations, and different villains with different evil purposes. They may be similar in some aspects, but they stand alone in their own unique way. Lord of the Rings was a cultural phenomenon. Star Wars was a cultural phenomenon. One of them is not better than the other because they impacted society in their own unique way. Apples and oranges. They both taste great and they are both fruits, so why try to alienate them and separate two generations of people who could realistically find enjoyment in both?

Films? The original starwars films are amazing and part of my childhood.

The LOTR movies blew, they were long, pretentious and boring. And don't even get me started on the horrific ending.

I hate hobbits.

They're both favorites. But Star Wars is a little more favorite, but if I can't have Star Wars then it's okay because Lord of the Rings is favorite anyway. It's like another favorite, but not as much. Not as much favorite. But they're both good. They're both good.

Lord of the Rings by far. The world is just more interesting and the overall story is better.
