I think both are pretty damn good, but I'd definitely pick Star Wars.

I just like the universe better, it seems to have a LOT more imagination in it then LotR. Plus, if we go by the expanded universe, Star Wars gave us KotOR, which is one of my favorite games of all time.

Definitly star wars for my tastes, my interest in scifi outweighs interest in fantasy by a massive margin.

And if i were to be truthful, I simply prefer the star wars films (original films, the prequels...are a special case, i do find redeeming qualities in them but they didn't have the same magic the old films had for me) to the LOTR series.

Original, "main" story: LOTR. Expanded Universe: Star Wars.

Yes, I prefer the Star Wars EU to The Hobbit, what of it? :p
Out of curiosity, have you read the Dark Empire series?
And don't forget the Republic Commando series while your at it, good books, and a good game too if you feel like playing it. I still prefer LotR over SW, but both have some epic things about them.

I wonder what the results for this poll would have been if everything Star Wars that came after 1980 never happened.
It still would probably be LOTR. The acting was much better in those films, and I think the story was much stronger with the Rings movies, although they both follow the standard hero's journey formula.

Too difficult to choose. For just the films I think i'd say LOTR but for the whole ext universe they are both so good.

LotR. Whereas Star Wars goes (in film-numerical order) bad-bad-OK-great-great-good, LotR goes great-great-great-?-?

Which is to say, it has the power to be an all-hits franchise. Star Wars is already somewhat damaged merchandise. LotR? Not so much.

Lord of the Rings and really... it isn't even a close contest. Then again I was never that into Star Wars. I liked the series just fine but I've never been a huge fan.

Lord of the Rings though? Let me put it this way: I have a cabinet on my wall containing over 100 lead-cast figures of characters from those movies. To go with those, I have binders full of magazines about each of those characters. I have a copy of the books that is older than my own dad and that I've read multiple times. My bedroom wall is covered in small-ish posters from the films. And when I get a Blu Ray player for my birthday, one of the first things I am going to buy is the Extended Edition Blu Ray Box Set.

Star Wars, no question.

While I loved both series, and LOTR may have some of the better movies as far as effects, acting, and plot goes, Star Wars has a special staying power in my mind that has yet to be replicated by anything else. To this day I can recall most of every moment in the original SW trilogy, and yet I barely remember half of what happened in the last two LOTR movies. All I remember about those films were the amazing action scenes with orcs getting stabbed.

Both good but star wars just never quite had the "magic" of LotR.
I of course assume we're talking about the movies and not the books since otherwise it isn't even fair.

The characters are one of the only problems I have with LOTR. I tallied and came up with only five characters who behave in even a halfway believable or relatable fashion. That's Sam, Pippin, Merry, Boromir, and Faramir. All the others are impossibly noble and incredibly dull. I just get annoyed when 75 percent of a work's character serve no other purpose than driving the plot or building the setting.

Not that your preference isn't valid, it's just something that has always bothered me.

For me it has to be the Lord of the rings, simply because of the sheer depth and detail of the world, what tolkien did is mind blowing, creating a world, with multiple races, with different languages, different styles of writing for some and a mostly complete world history. its nothing short of genius.
the downside, everyone is coping it for "their" fantesy, whiether races or darks ages like setting or both, makeing the genere stale as a result. though the movies are awesome no the less. but I like sci-fi more so Star Wars for the win
