I like them both, but Led Zeppelin beats them by a long shot.

Never heard a band with so many, not only good, but fantastic songs. Everything from soft love songs (The Rain Song, Stairway to Heaven) to what is basically punk (Communication Breakdown) to blues (I Can't Quit you Baby, In My Time of Dying) and everything in-between.

That is seriously a tough call, no joke. On one hand I have a band that changed the world, and on the other a band that revolutionized rock in an era perfect for the new generation. I love the Rolling Stones but I'm gonna have to give it to the Beatles, I did a report on John Lennon for my World History AP giant poster project on,"Important figures in world history," found out a lot about Lennon. Did you know that he was born In Liverpool during the Battle of Britain in 1940? I guess you could say*put on sunglasses* he was a baby boomer.

YEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

P.S. Why isn't The Who up there?

I like the stones but prefer the beatles.

And about the Stones Beatles rivalry back in the day, my parents told me the same thing, my dad chose stones and my mother the beatles.

Scary fact, the Beatles started as a boyband.

Comparing their respective primes, apples and oranges. I'm personally more of a Stones fan because I'm more of a blues fan in general, but I wouldn't say one belongs above the other in the eyes of history.

This is not the real debate in my household. The Stones are good, but the Beatles are better, and the real competition comes in between The Beatles and Led Zeppelin.

My father was a bit of a Beatles fangirl in his day, and one of his friends introduced him to Led Zeppelin via Communication Breakdown. He's like "listen to these guys, they'll be the next Beatles" and Dad was like ".. this is crap. It's loud and noisy and I don't like it."

Then again, Communication Breakdown IS loud and noisy. This bad experience aside, my father eventually grew to like Zeppelin, though perhaps not as much as the Beatles. But the two bands are about entirely different things.

This past winter whilst remodeling our dining room I told my xbox to take all my Beatles music and all my Led Zeppelin music, mix it up randomly, and play it. The juxtaposition between the two bands was never more apparent, or appealing, than by doing this. The Beatles are much more harmonious and "pretty" sounding, even when they are rocking out, and Led Zeppelin is more about different sounds competing nicely rather than blending, if that makes sense.

This being said, the Stones are good, but not int he same calibur, to me, because they were /mostly/ a one trick pony. Loud rock with sexual tones. Don't Stop and Start Me Up coming to mind first and foremost. The few times they dailied away from this formula either came off as trippy, She's a Rainbow in the good way, Ruby Tuesday a little less so, or gimicky, like Shattered.

The Beatles were much more pop, especially in their early, school boy days, with rock coming in later, while Led Zeppelin went hard rock at the start and the times they moved away from that turned out to be lovely, like the beginning or Stairway or all of The Battle of Evermore and Bron-y-aur Stomp. Plus, Zeppelin gets mega points for Lord of the Rings references in two songs. (The Battle of Evermore - "The Ringwraiths will ride in black" and Ramble On - "T'was in the darkest depths of Mordore I met a girl so fair, but Gollum and The Evil One crept up and slipped away with her.")

Also, Led Zep and the Beatles get points for still having members actively creating new things. Robert Plant's collaboration with Alison Kraus was haunting, while Band of Joy is joyful, and Paul McCartney will never stop amazing. I'm looking at YOU, Dance Tonight. What have the Stones done recently other than sing their greatest hits till their blue in the face and show up as Johnny Depp's daddy in Pirates?

So I would order it Led Zeppelin and Beatles tied for first, occasionally edging out on top depending on my mood, while the Stones receive honorable mention.

Also, VH1 said of the top 100 musical performers of all time, the Beatles were 1, Michael Jackson was 2, and Led Zeppelin was 3. I don't remember where the Stones fell, but not in the top 3, obviously.

The Beatles. I still like the Stones but their music isn't constantly good, it's either awesome or bad and not a large middle ground. The Beatles are more consistent with every song being good.
Yeh The Beatles just had it going on when they were together. Their music was godly.

Someone else with Zeppelin love. They are a very versatile band, and they produced some sounds like none other. Kashmir comes to mind, that lovely haunting sound is amazing.

What about the Who?
aren't they considered to be in a trilogy of the british invasion

OT: the Beatles
I don't know why, but I've never been able to get into the Who that much, no matter how much I try. Maybe I just need to listen to more, I like what I've heard but that don't inspire awe in me like the Beatles or Led Zeppelin.

God save the Kinks!

Okay, okay, out of those two I'd say the Stones. More my kind of music.

The Stones are good, but I would have to say The Beatles are better, as they are probably my favorite band ever. The only other bands that come close to The Beatles for me are Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin.

My parents used to say that when they were younger, a sort of rivalry was engineered by record companies between The Rolling Stones and The Beatles. Apparently, you were either a Stones person or a Beatles person. They were "Stones people" and now I have to say I am too. As a musician, I recognise the strength in the Beatles music, but I don't like it much. Are other people like this? Or have my parents led me down yet another drunken rabbit-hole?
I am in the other boat, grew up with a Beatles fan of a father. (It has lead me to see Paul McCartney twice in concert though :D)

Oh yes, I love me some Zeppelin. I used to hate Zeppelin as a kid because my father would blast their songs all the time and well into the night. As I grew up I learned to like musicians like Hendrix and The Doors, but eventually Led Zeppelin topped out as my favorite band and I'd say they make up a good quarter of my iTunes now.

The Beatles. I grew up with them and can name about fifteen of their songs of the top of my head, whereas I don't know ANYTHING the Rolling Stones has ever made...

There's actually a song by Metric that asks "Who'd you rather be, The Beatles or the Rolling Stones." To be fair most of the Beatles are now dead, that said though the song got me thinking about this very same question. Who's the better band? After months of deliberation I must report... That I have no answer. I like them both and shame on you for not including a cop-out option on the poll.
