Okay let explain first marvel comics has 2 universes the 616(the regular one)and the ultimate, in the ultimate universe peter parker(spiderman) died about a month ago, today have been revealed that his successor is half black, half hispanic Miles Morales.

http://comics.ign.com/articles/118/1185446p1.html

http://forums.comicbookresources.com/showthread.php?t=379006

so what the problem? that comics fan have pretty much gone nuts over this. Some say that this is good thing and other say that this is bullshit and killing peter parker just to put a black person as spiderman is wrong.

oh and before somebody ask dead in the ultimate universe is permanent so far.

I really don't see the problem. I don't see how race effects how people would perceive a new character. I kind of understood it when I heard that Peter Parker may be portrayed by a black man, but this is an entirely different character. I don't understand why people are making a big fuss over it.

Interesting choice, but given the sharp half/half minority mix they've given Miles (not to mention the surname), I think it might have been going a bit far. I'm not saying that a superhero SHOULDN'T have that mix, but maybe if Marvel wants to bring non-caucasian ethnicities in as major characters to an established hero lineage (in this case, Spiderman), maybe a better choice would be just to make it one ethnicity (you know, if you can make sense of all that).

The beauty of Marvel's storylines is that they have the opportunity to have the mantle handed down, so that the next generation can be even more diverse than the previous. Going from a white-bread geek to a half black, half hispanic guy is a bit of a leap of the imagination by any standards. It's not like they're replacing an actor on a daytime soap. This is replacing a character that has been synonymous with the mask for so very long.

Then again, maybe a good shake up is exactly what the Ultimate universe really needs...

Ultimate isn't part of the main story right? And all that should really matter is the quality of the writing. I understand people cringing at this maybe being a kind of comic book affirmative action, but they'll come around as long as the writing holds up.

Edit: Didn't they do this with Nick Fury as well? I don't remember too many people complaining about that.

It seems pretty ridiculous to me. Seems like they're offing the white guy just to add some diversity. I'm not saying the superhero world doesn't need diversity, but doing it in a publicity-stunt, fuck-your-fans way is kinda lame.

I'm not into comics much, but I always figured that most people think of Spiderman not as just a suit that can have interchangeable people underneath it, but as Peter Parker

I don't give a damn about the race, I'm just really unhappy that Peter Parker is dead.

Nothing wrong with superheroes of all races but honestly, why do they do this?

They take pre-existing heroes and change their ethnicity. They did it with the Green Lantern, and sure it didn't take away from the action, but you don't have to change a character just to fit diversity. Just make some new ones of different races.

It's not wrong, it's just not canonical.

I don't see what the big deal I mean they probably bring back Peter Parker in some ridiculous way. Comic book compaines aren't really known for keeping their super heroes dead for very long.

Eh...have to wait and see what they do with it.

I mean, they made Batwoman lesbian and jewish...being lesbian was of some importance to her character, being jewish wasn't, but all of it was overshadowed by her superheroing anyway.

I like it. I don't read comic books, but it's cool. In fact, I think the red and blue spidey outfit kind of looks better on him than it does a white guy. You know what? I would even be in favor of a version where the original Spider Man was hisblanick. You know, to change things up. In fact, now I wish that's what the 2012 reboot movie was going to do; then I would actually have reason to be a little excited about it. *tee hee*

Ultimate Pete went out like a fucking champ, and the idea of someone else, someone he never really met who just knows about him from the papers and whatnot, taking up the mantle is kinda cool, and rather fitting given Spidey's place in the Ultimate Marvel universe. He's the relentlessly uncompromising good guy who refuses to let things drag him down - the idea of him inspiring another is awesome.

And given that in no small part this happened because the other 'heroes' were too busy having a pissing match with each other and couldn't be arsed to help... it might even wind up having some major knock-on effects on the Ultimates, which can only be a good thing IMO. I'm looking forward to seeing what these storys look like - I hope they pull this off.

I think it's a bad move. Not because of the race, god no. But because Miles has never appeared in the comics till this point, this is a popular series that's run what 160 issues? If he had appeared in any of those and had some connection to Spiderman I'd buy it, but this unfortunatley seems like a publicity stunt.

If Flash Thompson, Kitty Pryde, Gwen Stacey, Jessica Drew, Bobby Drake or Johnny Storm took up the costume that would have made sense. Hell if Nick Fury took up the costume it'd still make more sense and that would be ridiculous(ly awesome).

Wow! That actually sounds pretty awesome!

Almost enough so to make me actually consider maybe thinking about buying a super-hero comic book (other than Adam Warren's Empowered). Almost.

He is from New York. Makes sense to me. It isn't some vital part of the story that he is white. If they turned Thor black, I could see an argument, but not here.

as long as they have a good backstory, I dont have a problem with it. if miles morales retains the presence of an outcast who becomes a super hero, I'm totally fine with it.

Lets see...

Killing off a "beloved" char,
Doing so via martyrdom,
Trying to appeal to a broader racial demographic,
Doing so in a melodramatic way to illicit emotion.

Nope Im totally not seeing the Disney influence on marvel. Not at all. No sir.

I'm honestly a little bothered by this entire concept. How does making the new Spiderman black/latino contribute to the story in any way?

Moreover, the idea of announcing that you're "diversifying" the genre seems a bit backward. If you want to diversify, just introduce superheroes of other races. Holding up a big sign that you're so politically correct by doing this just comes off as obnoxious to me.

I... don't care. At least I don't care that he's not white.

I'm surprised they killed off Peter Parker though.
