So...When did men stop being men and women stop being women?
In the past, you know a man was a man and a woman a woman. And I'm not talking about the hole gender roll part. Just... A man was good at this and that and a woman the same in other areas.

And why are men now so crazy about there appearance? Okay, men should dress well, but now they are crazy about make up and perfume. I just don't get what the hell happened :/

Men are more like women. Women are more like... I don't know what a women are like now.

Even gay men are looking ridiculous now.( I have noting against gay men/women)

So what the hell happened?

Your mother obviously is trying to reverse the genders in a plan to make the Earth rotate in the opposite direction so she can have eternal life and you'll never get your inheritance. Run-on sentences ftw.

Given the nature of the image compariosn, it seems the advent of colour photography is to blame...

But obviously not. However, the fact that one set is in black and white and the other is high-res colour, the time difference is pretty obvious. And society has had a lot of time to change.

The world, society and cultural norms do change with time. Change is like a strong current, if you try to go against it you won't get very far and will only hinder yourself.

People have access to many different images from different periods in society, and can now say "but wait!"

But yeah, just the death of society (In my opinion)

I can't even begin to fathom what the hell you're on about.

Are you going on about men being pussies, and women growing butch?

Are you on about affirmative female action?

What, man, what? Elaborate a little.

Societies idea of the gender roles has changed unfortunately, as much as I'd like it to be like the way it was before when men were men and got shit done rather then wannabie Beiber emo kid. as for the women, society and the media are more and more installing the sex sells stuff into the products which unfortunately will mean more shit singers that still make music because they show off a little flesh

Tl;Dr: The media are mind washing us for... some reason?

oOOOOOoooooh better get your tin-foil hats ready!

I'm not talking about the "gender" rolls. Just... Why the hell do people dress like they did run throw a wall of cloths and just said "Well this will work"?

Okay. 50 years ago, it was cool to be a "Manly man" = "Oh shit, my car has broken down. Better fix it then". Men(and women) could do so many thing. And yes, I would not mind if women would act more like a "classic" women from time to time. Not saying they should just stay in the kitchen making food, but damn it, would a cute dress and a smile kill you?

You know, I could be high minded and intelligent and talk about the shift of gender rolls as we move into a society where a man's strength and a woman's rolls are less concrete given technological advancements and psychological understanding, or how as with suits and dressed thirty years ago, dressing like your mommy never hugged you, or that you enjoy sex with any crevice of your body is perfectly acceptable in the bright world of tomorrow.

But I won't.

For starters, my display picture is me. I mean, it's about two years old, but my face has only become more stern, the beard is fuller and more maintained. I look like Brian Blessed when I'm happy and Orson Welles when I'm pissed. I look like a man. I have never understood the emo movement, because I immediately embraced my masculinity as I grew older. Twenty somethings content looking twelve is mind boggling.

My wife dresses like a woman, not a sperm receptical. And I say that not because women who dress like Kesha (because fuck your dollar sign, you're the reason it's not worth anything) are whores. I'm saying Kesha is a whore. Who's armpits have herpes. And Knees and the clap.

Now, the gay people thing is ENTIRELY a strawman. Because Perez Hilton isn't gay. I mean, clearly. He's either, A., a far right conservative who has vowed to give homosexuality such a bad name that he has dedicated his life to being the biggest, most flamboyantly obnoxious gay dude, right down to being more gay than Liberace being set on fire and run through a rainbow tumble drier. And I say this possibility because you'll notice that Perez (I fucking hate that name) is also a racist and a sexist, two traits not common among the gay community. And let's face it. The farther right you go, that harder it is not to be racist and sexist.

Or, B. A Pod Person. I think this possibility speaks for itself.

Honestly, this thread smacks of ignorance. In the real world, most men look like men. And even in the popular culture, the masculine heroes are more common than pansy pretty boys in movies and television. Women with class and grace are often more popular than those who dig dudes who look like McJagger (I fucking hate that I know that lyric) and Perez Hilton is a racist alien, and the only gay guy of his type.

In music, it's different. Kinda. Kesha, That... guy (?), and Perez Hilton only have notoriety or popularity with 14 year old girls. Anyone with actual taste or, god forbid, a sex drive, finds people like this repulsive.

Why else do you think it comes so naturally for you to make Kesha and Hilton the butt of your jokes?

Is you crazy? Racism is a big -largely unspoken- issue within the mainstream gay community.

Social conservatism on the Escapist? It's more likely than you think.

I love how this thread entirely ignores the tendency for Hollywood and mainstream media to have ever increasingly muscular men. That steroid abuse, body dysmorphia and body image problems are becoming increasing problems for men as men's role models move even farther from "average". Compare Paul Newman to the guy from Thor.

Fuck masculinity. ITT Rose glasses up to eleven.

Yeah, but that is also overkill. I'm not talking about men with muscle shooting out everywhere.
I'm just talking about the everyday man, they man/women you walk by in the street.

Oh. Well, you'll have to forgive me. But in my neck of the woods, it's never been an overlapping issue. Typically speaking, the dudes who do dudes don't despise darky. So this is news to me.

Meh. You are what you are, I suppose. I disagree with you, but ho-kay.

Except that, just going with Hollywood, the bar for 'masculine hero' has been getting lower. Thor is a perfect position for cherry picking, sure, but it's also based on norse mythology, and I don't know if you're aware how the norse pictured themselves, but they were all seventeen foot eight hundred pound walls of muscles who wielded axes made from the teeth of world serpents and hammers made from the bones of elder gods. To get the source material right, you kinda have to play that up. But let's look at 'human' action heroes, shall we? We peaked in the 80s, because Sly, Arnold, Van Damm and their ilk would have laughed Jason Statham (sp?) off the stage back in the day, but today he's barney bad ass number one.

It does come down to conditioning by ages. Fifty years ago, and really, through most of the modern era since the invention of the gun the hero could be anyone. Anyone with the determination and drive to be a hero, was a hero. Which is why Clint Eastwood, who's always been a sort of thin, lithe kinda guy, has been a massive bad ass since the 70s.

BUT A HUN'RED YEARS AGO, LADDEH, YA NEEDEH THEH MUSCLE TO CHOKE A BEAR WITH YER INDEX FIN'ER, OR YOU WERE A WOMAAAAAAN!

So your argument, as far as popular mythology goes, doesn't hold water. Sports stars are guilty of this, but that's because the US would rather watch mongoloid hypermen created by drugs and science play football, as opposed to actual humans. I prefer hockey and (intl) football, myself.
Fuck masculinity.
No, Sir and/or Ma'am. Masculinity is important now as it ever was, and it deserves respect. As does femininity and any other form of the human condition.

I don't really understand what your ranting is about. Is this thread really about how awesome Freddie Mercury was? If so, you can count me in
