hiya folks! very simple question (look at title)

I've been tempted into gaming again by the new gta but it soon turned into just gaming in general (getting a pc that can run my dark souls, xcom eu and relative graphics games)

I was deciding whether or not to prepare for the next gen and given that the prices are pretty high (ie. I'd rather spend about 300-400$ on something as opposed to a grand) The steam OS which apparently makes the most of your hardware is pretty neat sounding. And that controller is looking to be golden (I've got about a month to wait how things shape up with it as I'm currently waiting for the new xcom expansion)

Otherwise I've got a laptop to do all my boring real life stuff and am looking to get a tower pc that's strictly for gaming (in my case I'd just have to buy a monitor for desktop gaming as I have all the other stuff (audio, mouse, keyboard, etc.) hooked up.

But I suppose with all that said, who is looking into buying a pc strictly for gaming as they would your conventional gaming consoles? (xbox,ps,wii, etc.)

Otherwise just some discussions on game plans (buying hardware) would be nice as i could use some more idea's regarding it.

Well I have almost no interest whatsoever in the Xbox One of the PS4, and my PC is starting to get behind. I can play games such as Skyrim at the top settings, but anything newer than that I am struggling with. Natural Selection 2 takes about 5 minutes to pre-cache thanks to my relatively low RAM.

So assuming I am going to continue playing games the chances are I will either upgrade my PC or buy a Steam Box. I cannot say I definitely will get one, because I have no idea what they will be like yet, but it certainly seems more appealing than the next generation of consoles.

That said there aren't really any upcoming games that I'd want though. The only two that come to mind beyond indie titles that I'd be able to play are Dragon Age Inquisition and TitanFall, and both of those are on the "maybe" pile.

So right now I am just going to wait and see.

I wont be buying a Steam box but I will be trying the OS out at least, if its pretty good it will be a fairly permanent dual boot at least.

The entire announcements Valve has made so far don't really hold much of my interest, but I am wondering what the controller would feel like in my hands.

I'll probably upgrade my desktop next year and just go for a Wii U and 3DS (in time for Pokemon) in the coming months.

Well I already have a very gaming-capable PC and I'm not all that tempted to take PC gaming to the living room so basically I have no reason to purchase the actual Steambox.

I'd be interested to try out the OS though provided it gets some serious support and does provide a noticibly improved gaming experience. I don't think I'll be one of the early adopters (there's not really any games with Linux support that I play regurlarly), but I'll be keeping an eye on this.

The new controller looks interesting but I'm pretty comfortable with the mouse/keyboard for gaming on PC. At this stage I see no reason to get one.

I already have a fairly heavy duty gaming rig so not that bothered really, the streaming and family sharing appeals, and the controller could be cool for older point and click games to play away from my desk, in bed or on the couch.

I'll get a steam box eventually, I'm gaming on an Intel HD 4000 :D Until I buy one, I'll play around with the OS.

If i actually start gaming again, I haven't had the desire in over a month, then I will be getting a steam machine. I think that its premise is so cool.

Not really interested in it, and I'm still insanely doubtful of its viability in the market. I think some people buying it and expecting it to work just like a console are going to be in for an awful shock. I mean come on Valve has been pretty bad with their quality control when it comes to rolling out games that aren't theirs (even their own games have had problems), they're no GOG. To suddenly expect them to heft that burden when they haven't before...yea. Also I'm still doubtful about the controller, but who knows maybe it will be the most amazing thing ever; but if it's precision isn't spot on like a mouse/keyboard online players are probably, more often than not, going to get their asses handed to them.

There's a good chance that I'll get a steam box, or at least build my own computer with the steam OS next time I need an upgrade.

I've been using a laptop for some time now, and while it's been pretty decent for gaming (it played bioshock infinite at over 60 fps most of the time) I'm going to be needing an upgrade whenever it dies (which will probably be soon considering how much I push it when I game).

I've finished college now, so I no longer need a laptop, and considering how badly microsoft has been screwing up windows, and the fact that I have absolutely no interest in touching windows 8 with a 10 foot pole, I'm very open to using steam OS, especially if it turns out to be a bit more accessible than Ubuntu.

I have a PC already. It plays games pretty well. It probably needs a new processor, but I can get that cheaper than a good Steam Machine. Maybe I'll get one of the controllers if it's good, but otherwise?

Meh.

Well we haven't seen any of the Steamboxes yet sooooooo I don't know. I would want a new pc sometime cause all I have now is an over sized laptop. If they sell Steamboxes in a small form factor that would be hard to build for a good price then I don't see why not. What's the worst that could happen? If it doesn't work out I could just put Windows on it later. But even then, I won't be buying for a few years due to lack of money and space for a tower, so I'd be well versed on the boxes and OS by then and it will have had time to settle in the market.

As for the OS, I will definitely try it but I doubt I'll duel boot to it. I only have a laptop and most of my hard drive is full anyway so I wouldn't have much room for a partition without some serious managing. Unless of course the OS takes off or its amazing or something that would make it worth the hassle

Not enough details to choose.

I'll be trying out the OS, though, so maybe my computer will turn into a Steam Machine. :D

Only because I need a powerful PC to work, I might not get one. Still I'll dual boot the SteamOS and get one or more Steam Controllers, and recommend the SteamBox to friends wanting to get a new console. And might more likely move all my gaming to the couch since desk, mouse and keyboard is something my brain associates with work for quite a while already.

I'm probably gonna get a PS4 for some of the games and I have a decent laptop and PC. Might dual boot my laptop with SteamOS, might make up for Windows 8's piles of issues.

We have yet to see the steam machines apart from Piston. An that was to expensive for what it was. It will depend on price especially to compete with console owners who are looking toward the XB1/PS4. But if the Piston is $999, then what are the others going to be priced as?

I already have a kick-ass PC that I built just this year, so, no. I don't see the point, personally. Steam OS looks interesting, but I don't use big screen mode anyway, and I run other applications that aren't games.
