4$ a month is a lot right? How do we make it through the year without starving .
Cut me some slack, I was a baby back my primarily console gaming days. $60 for a year of gold membership was a significant investment for me in terms of the money I had to spend on gaming. I just don't like the idea of having to spend $60 a year for basic online functionality that is free on PS3 and PC. There are other things that I could be spending that money on.

It just seems like a silly business model to me now.
agreed but its £30 in the uk for a year lol rather stick to pc gaming, least u can torrent a game see if its worth it then buy it instead of shelling out for the latest call of duty to find out its shit

The systems are powerful enough already in most cases. We need more ideas not hardware.
So 1/2 a gb of RAM is powerful. So graphics cards that were mid range 7 years ago is powerful? Lol. I love how people complained when BF3 dropped from 32 players to 24 on consoles. What did you expect. Consoles are HORRIBLY outdated... I'll take my 64 players on PC with modern hardware any day over the "Ideas" Sony and Microsoft come up with. (Yeah motion control is the way of the future right...?)

Curiosity. Simple, blatant, curiosity. I like new stuff.
Gotta put forth the same kind of response.

I like new shiny things, I like new toys to play with, hence I want new consoles and such.

I'm looking forward to it because 720p and 30fps is just pathetic. Once large scale games like Elder Scrolls and Battlefield reach 1080p 60fps with decent anti-aliasing on consoles I think the goal has been reached and no major evolution is required on that front anymore.

I was talking about new ideas for games not new ideas for hardware although that works too.
As you said more powerful hardware gets you more players in a game or better graphics. The graphics are already good and and we don't need 100 players in a single lobby. The hardware is perfectly able to do what it needs to do. Why do you think there has been a rush of indie games? They don't require elite PC systems they just have better gameplay and ideas than just cramming a few more people into a single lobby.

New stuff I guess.
I dunno, I generally don't get Consoles near release and my PC is already pretty ballin'.

I'm looking forward to the new console generation so I can finally afford the old (current) generation. I am missing out on some console gems, which have never seen the light of my wonderful gaming PC.

I'm not. I've found this generation to be lack luster at best, largely lacking for any variety or spark. I tire of sitting here listening to people gush about what amounts to little more than a flashy gimmick while at the same time condemning other so-called gimmicks. Yeah you know exactly what I'm talking about. I am not looking forward to a new generation where I can only see things getting worse.

Also because I want to say from day one, "my PC is still more powerful than this."
I doubt that will happen. People forget how old the consoles are now. It's one of if not the longest console lifespans so far, but when it came out they were more powerful than everyones PC. People keep basing what they think the new generation will be off 7 year old hardware. That's a long time in for technology in this day and age. When they do make the new consoles they'll probably be much more powerful than the majority of computers at twice the price, just by looking at the past and how they have stacked up at that point.

Two reasons, first, I wanna see what they do with a fresh batch of tech, second, pc ports of console games are so much more limited now than they will be once a new console generation comes out, after all consoles now are running terrifyingly oboslete tech compared with PCs, they're using stuff that I was using 6 years ago, and since then many major changes in hardware architecture have taken place, therefor, the next gen of consoles have a chance to impress people again, and maybe help us pc gamers actually get more games that are open to the power that is available rather than limited by having come from the past.

I don't really care about graphics too much, nor do I really care about the size, scope and complexity of games, however I am looking forward to games being able to take advantage of more RAM and faster processors and live up to their true potential.

To be honest, I could be quite happy with games that are very similar to the current generation, but with more memory to contain and utilise everything the game produces with no programming short-cuts or smoke and mirrors.

For example, a Grand Theft Auto game in which the traffic is truly random, rather than car spawning being determined by what car you're driving.

How about a Saints Row game in which actors and vehicles don't disappear from the game world when you turn around and look the other way (or fade from existence when using a sniper scope).

I don't want much, just for games to live up to full potential rather than be hobbled by merge resources... it's impressive what developers can do with current hardware and 512mb of RAM, but it could be so much better with smoother, more consistent gameplay and full scale draw distances that could render solid objects as far as you can conceivably see.

On a similar note, I really hope Grand Theft Auto 5 is released at the beginning of the next generation rather than at the end of this one.

It's not just graphics and player count. It's a lot of things. Like animation for example. the reason why skyrim looks so beautiful and is so massive but sucks so horribly in the animation department is because of system constraints. Vice versa on Dragons Dogma where the game moves and animates beautifully with tons of different and unique skills to keep it interesting, but sucks graphics wise and has to cut off the top and bottom parts of the screen for performance issue. Similar idea with dark souls framerate problems, lots of smooth animations programmed into the game, but the system sometimes can't handle everything and lags even when the game itself doesn't look too amazing graphically.

lots of ARPG's have to sacrifice a huge world for good combat or the other way around because both of them are too big for modern consoles.

Imagine a game the size of skyrim with dark souls combat and dragons dogma style skills. You have the perfect ARPG there. Something that can't be achieved with current technology.

I'm not. I'm scared to tits to see the release prices, and I am perfectly comfy collecting every PS2 game. If they use the power to make games more innovative then I might get excited but right now I don't give a damn.

As a primarily PC gamer (who owns a Wii), my stake in things is a little different than some. I recognize that the console market kind of drives the industry; I'm just far from confident that it, and particularly the latest generation, are driving it in the right direction.

I'm excited because it means there will be games that will actually make my PC sweat for legitimate reasons, and not because of a really shitty port job *cough* GTA IV *cough*

Seriously, the current console generation is getting pathetic. When we now have midrange PCs that have 16 times the RAM, 4 times the Video RAM, and something like 4 times the graphics processing power at minimum, it is seriously time for a hardware upgrade on the consoles.

In the past couple of years, developers have had to cut every corner possible to get the games to barely maintain playable framerates on the aging console hardware. At this point, the current console hardware is only adequate for indie games and small scale Xbox Live Arcade titles. The aging console hardware is seriously hampering any larger scale game due to memory limitations alone.

I want to see what happens, where all the technology goes, what the boundaries will be, how the people react, what impact it has on the industry. So kind of everything?

Yes this^. Overly long console life cycles are figuratively holding gaming back. It's not just "graphics hurr durr", there's been so many games this gen that were literally butchered so they could run on 6+ year old hardware, and not from a graphical perspective. Both of you men, take my yes. Take it all.
