Point is don't let the PS3 sales fool you it's doing QUITE WELL in fact IMO the console leader right now
So the console that sold the worst and leaked everyone's personal data and credit card info is the market leader? How do you arrive at that conclusion?
Our system still works :p

I would recuse myself to the PC completely.

Microsoft has earned my eternal enmity. Frankly, I don't see this vanishing any time soon. Plus, I know that if they have the "hardcore" console market almost entirely to themselves, they'll rapidly become even more intolerable towards their PC audience. Not something to look forward to, gentlemen. Not at all.
Problem with running to your PC is that chances are you'll be using windows for gaming and funding Microsoft anyway :p

Always seemed a plausible scenario to me.

Sony has the smallest interest in consoles, the PS3 being just one product out of many electronic products they make and the PS3 is behind in sales and profits.

Nintendo isn't going away soon.
The wii was a massive succes and overal Nintendo has always done well. Too early to speculate on a WiiU failure at this point. Most here had thought before launch that the wii would fail too, myself included. Safer to assume such gimmicks sell.
More importantly, consoles are Nintendo's only business. They'll go to the bitter end if necessary.

M$ have pretty succesful console in #2 place. They have an interest in dominating all hardware platforms and protect windows and they have very deep pockets. Not going away.

For the sake of competition let's hope the playstation brand will do better.

Once again - vague article in Destructoid vs detailed numbers on VGCHartz...

http://www.vgchartz.com/article/88789/2012-year-on-year-sales-and-market-share-update-to-january-28th/

Please note the sales figures for the last few years... lifetime may see PS3 in third (by a small margin, but since 2009, they are the market leader).
I wouldn't put to much faith in those statistics, I just did a quick google myself and Destructoid says PS3 is the best selling where as Eurogamer says otherwise. It seems there as many charts and answers as there are websites.

Even a PS3 biased site I found admitted PS3 sales are still behind the Xbox in North America. The hardware sales are part of the picture, the Xbox sells more software and is certainly more profitable than the PS3.

Essentially, without competition, Microsoft would be able to do whatever they want.
That's exactly why it would be a bad thing. Having a single console future may be quite a good idea since we wouldn't have to worry about compatibility issues or exclusives, but I don't want Microsoft to be in charge of that single console. They would use it to create a monopoly and hike up prices and generally make it a pain in the arse to use the machine. They're already really draconian over 3rd party hardware so they can charge really high prices for their own. And they have a similar attitude when it comes to multi-platform games too. Imagine how bad they would be if they controlled the whole console market! Not good! At this point at least, competition is good for the consumer.

And to be honest, with these rumours of the next Xbox being Kinect focused and blocking used games, a PS4 was starting to look pretty appealing.

Okay, on the first point, enough with the panic button. There's three major console companies and one of them's got to be in third. They're also so ginormous that it would probably take YEARS or one very quick war to actually destroy one. It's gotten to that point.

Second point, Miciosoft as the sole console on the market would be painful. Why? Well, for starters, RROD. There's a Yellow Light Of Doom for PS3s, but unless I'm going to the wrong site...they don't happen as often. Poor X-Box fans have to deal with RROD in waves sometimes, a generation of machine deaths. Now, this technology is amazing, but it's really the "America! Fuck yeah!" of the other console giant. It's a nice system, but Microsoft didn't exactly pioneer this stuff. And let's not forget that, well, this IS Microsoft...and there are enough complaints about Microsoft to fill uhhh...Jupiter, seriously. Okay, everybody complains about EVERYTHING, really, but the butt of the joke is seen more against what many call the Evil Empire. Sorry, Bill. Branded for life.

Sir, I am deeply offended.

Nintendo has as much hardcore as MS and Sony do, or even more. Look at Monster Hunter Tri. Look at Sin and Punishment or Kid Icarus: Uprising.*snip*
I agree but you did leave out Xenoblade Chronicles one of the most impressive and enjoyable games this generation (or any generation) there is also the last story coming out soon so hopefully that will be good as well and dont forget mario galaxy a rare game that has appeal to both hardcore and casual gamers.

Trouble with Nintendo wii is that there are a lot more casual games on the system so the `proper` games tend to get lost and bypass most peoples attention and now they seem to have dug themselves into a hole by trying to appeal to the casual crowd only to realise casual gamers dont really buy that many games and arent a sustainable primary market.

Anyway if for some reason Microsoft did become the only `hardcore` console on the market I would stop gaming as it would be a very bad situation for the market there needs to be competition and Microsoft can not be trusted to not screw over everybody as much as possible if they had a monopoly on the console market (or near to). Actually I wouldnt trust any company with a monopoly not to try and milk people as much as possible but out of the three console manufacturers microsofts dominance would be worst case scenario.

Third huh? PS1+PS2+PS3=319 million sales (or near abouts), but let's be fair, and remove the PS1, since Microsoft wasn't in the market then, to give us 216 million sales.

Stack that against Xbox+X360= 90 million sales, I don't see Sony below Microsoft on that count.

Nintendo? 33+22+95=150 million (64+GC+Wii), or 117 million the last 2 generations, Playstation's 319 million beat it more than two to one, its 216 million is nearly double as well... did you research this based on the current console generation only?

Ah yes, your link says "If you want lifetime numbers, Nintendo still wins, with 95 million Wiis sold, beating 66 million Xbox 360s and 62 million PS3s" - The title is a bit of a grab, it's not genuinely true, its a snippet of truth, over a very small period of time, then taken out of context to imply something, which is not the case.

That's not including Nintendo's utter reign over the handheld market, including the past few generations. Or the NES/SNES popularity. Numbers account for little. Nintendo would also be the least likely to be "corrupted" by industry power. They're a gaming company through-and-through. Just not "hardcore" in the past few years. Sony, much like MS, is something else before being a gaming company, and is therefore open to being controlled from that aspect.

Bad. I don't have anything against Microsoft, but we need the diversity out there. Competition inspires greatness, after all.
Sony proves competition doesn't inspire greatness. what do they do to compete better? reduce losses like the psp e1000. how can you even respect a company that sells you a product with removed functions for the price of what america is already paying for the 3k?

As far as horrible decisions and customer awareness go, Sony wins without a doubt.
(granted Nintendo screwed up with the lack of proper titles on the wii, but they seem to have realized it and admitted it..)

MS doesn't get a cent from PC users besides the cost of Windows (which I already have) and standard publisher's rates (and considering they've published next to nothing for years...)
This, of course, is why they'd rather I abandon my PC in favor of paying them for the console, the 2-300% value markup on accessories, the ridiculous Live fees (Valve provides the same thing for free, you bastards), and their $8 per-game graft. Simply put, a console user pays them more money - which is why they stopped supporting the PC years ago - which (along with their occasional lying pledges of support) is why I hate them so.

Concerning that we all known Nintendo is in a secluded little league of their own, that leaves Microsoft to handle the hardcore video game market next generation.
...You're joking, right? Right?
What's the joke? Nintendo has been doing casual games and 2-3 first party titles every year since the Wii launched. The last hardcore game they released was BRAWL, and that was what, 2008?

I respect Nintendo as a company, but let's please not pretend that Nintendo makes games for "our" crowd, ie: hardcore gamers.
If your crowd is the FPS and TPS then yes, Nintendo isn't for your.
Last time I checked, Xenoblade Chronicle is a hardcore game, jet it came out just recently. This month we in Europe get The Last Story. Zelda came out in November last year... (just a few recent and there are many more).

Just because Nintendo doesn't have the gray/brown F/TPS doesn't mean they don't have hardcore games. Nintendo has more Wii exclusives worth mentioning than the Xbox 360 and PS3 together.

The new CEO could see a problem with the console war.
I'm an Xbox user, but you know what? We need that competition in order to avoid a monopoly. Otherwise, the next Xbox will be either crap or too expensive.

I would get myself a gaming PC in that case

I don't think it would be a monopoly. There are still 2 competitors:

A certain way to get games for free illegally
PC Gaming.

If prices skyrocketed, PC Gaming might end up being cheaper.

I would prefer Sony and MS to work together on a console - one does software and the other designs the hardware. But either way it would be a sad loss if Sony left, i remember my first PS1 and PS2 with fond memories.

I would only like it because I would only have to buy one console to get the former playstation exclusives that I've always wanted but didn't think they were worth buying a new console for.
