Hold on, I did a bit of digging and it turns out, that in the 70's the Mars mission couldn't get colour pictures, so they did what any upstanding, honest science team should do - doctored the colour in themselves. So now a lot of people think Mars is orange and Google image (or, as I use Google Pirate, Google Engravins) is flooded with pictures of the 70's mission.
In 2004 they sent a more high-tech lander to Mars, and they got the brown-grey-pink surface we now know to be true.
