It depended on what I did. Sneaking candies was a grounding. Not doing chores was a grounding. Talking back and making a scene was spanking.

Punishments should not be put on a barter system. A good part of their effectiveness comes from the realization that, by doing wrong, the one punished relinquished control of their life.

Both are absolutely retarded punishments and any parent who has even a remote understanding of basic education mechanics won't apply them.

A punishment that does not require a child to understand the reason it is punished for, isn't worth anything.
You are spot on.

Spanking is nothing more than violence and groundings today are a joke considering the internet, cable, console and all that other crap we as parent buy to our kids. Most kids today see it as a punishment to get kicked outside though. A cut in allowance or a financial compensation if the kid has a job is something they understand. Funny enough much like the real world money has the final word.

There are so many things wrong with fysical punsihment towards kids i don´t know where to begin.
Fortunally you go to jail for it where i live. And if i see you spank a kid, im gonna call social sevices on you´re ass soooooo fast.
Sry for gramma.
Actually, for me a grounding involves being banned from the computer, my iPod, the Internet, my music collection, the TV (whether it is mine or not), my consoles, and being allowed out. The only things I can do, are read, draw, and sleep. So don't make sweeping generalisations about parents and their techniques.

Edit: In fact, in extreme cases I have even had to cook for myself, wash my own clothes, and have been restricted to my room and the toilet. I was 13 the last time it happened.

I was spanked - very rarely grounded.

I had issues that may or may not have been related to this while I was a teenager, but now that I'm no longer living with my parents I'm pretty happy with the way they raised me.

I've said it and I'm going to say it always. If you want the use spanking as a way to discipline your children then I want to use cutting as a way to discipline my children.

Yes. I would rather be spanked than grounded. I got completely grounded for a year once. I would rather have had a spanking and gotten it over with. A few seconds of pain and then 5 minutes of numbness vs. 1 year of complete and utter boredom? What would you pick? I was never given the choice; for this reason, grounding was usually more effective after about 5th grade.
A year is a long time, what did you do? My example is above a few posts.

Parents need to beat their kids more often. My friend's little brother has friends that are complete little shits who obviously haven't ever been punished in their life...

I got both spanked and grounded at the same time. So my input wouldn't really matter lol

In the event that you're being sarcastic, I feel the need to point out that there's a difference between beating and administering fair physical punishment.

I'm pretty sure if you requested a caning in stead of jail time, you'd be held in contempt of court.

On a serious note I think spanking is a terrible way of disciplining children, it teaches them to think that you should respond to disagreements with physical violence and that's not ok.
