Poll: Spelling and Grammar on the Internet

I try not to correct any grammatical mistakes. It's possible that the person that posted has dyslexia, dysgraphia or some other learning disability. Moreover people can come across as obnoxious when they're correcting others, or will try and correct the mistake with something which in turn is incorrect. I cringe whenever an American attempts to correct my British spelling with the Americanised version.

I use proper punctuation and spelling in forum posts, but when I'm speaking over instant messengers I won't bother to use capitalisation or punctuation purely because it slightly slows down my typing.

It bothers me to a certain extent - if a post is very poorly written, I simply don't read it and move along.
As long as it looks like you've tried to make your text readable, and are aiming to get your point across, chances are I'll read your post if I'm in your thread.
It's very rare that I pick up on someone's spelling or grammatical mistakes. If I'm doing it, it's either because you have a "(sp?)" or I'm doing it for dramatic effect. (I don't use it as an argument on its own, and only if it is a relevant point, e.g. the OP is moaning people aren't replying to their unreadable post)

Fun fact: I once drove an online chat troll mad by using proper sentences. For some reason it really rather irked them.

I used to rage hard at people who use text-speak outside of texting, but I got over it. I just use it to troll people, now.
The only spelling thing that pisses me off is when people use MASSIVE run-on sentences. I read things the way I imagine people would actually say them, and run on sentences sound like a person is either out of breath, completely stupid, or both. Also, they're hard to read.

I believe that if you are going to take the time to write/type something, you should at least make sure you spell and punctuate it right.

As long as I can read it, I don't really have much issue with it.

My own grammar is probably better online, because I take the extra time to think about what I write, as opposed to just blurting things out.

To me, it's only those 12-13-14 year olds or really stupid people who rape the language with smal txt n shit.

But, as long as the message comes forth, it all works out to me, and I don't complain.

I care for it.

It's terrible when you see someone who's clearly not able to compose a sentence that any educated 12-year-old should be able to do.

But as long as it's readable and the mistakes aren't too bad, I'll usually not say anything.

Edit: I'm 15 and these are my thoughts. I'm probably fairly alone in that given my age range... we've all seen some of the train-wrecks that some teens have composed.

I think I have some strange grammar version of OCD because yes, it does bother me. Alot. I dunno why either, my grammar isn't that great to begin with so why I get so worked up over peoples use of there and they're I'll never know.

Facebook is the worst though, group and fan pages that have titles that are spelt wrong will continue to piss me off till the end of time itself.

As long as what your typing is clear and understood i don't see a point to corrected people over which Their, there or They're they used. Or if they accidentally spelled Rabbit Rabibt.

I can understand what they are saying. Its jsut a typo and small ones at that.

I'm a bit of a grammar Nazi, but I can let a few things slide. I know I make mistakes from time to time, so why should I rag on someone who makes them too?

It definitely does bother me, particularly in cases where the changes make no real difference to the entry of said text. While I don't often go to the length of actually correcting someone, I will certainly admit to taking a lower view of the person because of it.

I myself try my best to write everything correctly, but as English is not my first language, I quite often fail.

One of my first posts contained one mistake, which someone replied to and corrected [(the?) People are/is]. I felt very discouraged to post at all after that, but I've posted a couple of times. The text was still completely understandable. As far as I can remember, there wasn't even a "no offense" or anything like that. He only replied to correct my mistake.

But what drives me mad, is when people misspell my name. You'd think it's not that big of a deal, but when it's rarer to see "Gurppa" spelled correctly rather than "Gruppa", it annoys me A LOT! Also simple things like you're/your.

Luckily Opera has an English spell check built-in, so at least the words are correctly spelled, though the grammar may not be.

i think there's no need to get bent out of shape for such a small thing. this is a forum where ppl come to for recreational purposes, they are not writing an essay.

on the other hand i can understand if ppl get mad when someone types like "i CAN HAZ CHEEZBERGER"

I suffer from something called "spellblind" its not actually recognised by doctors but its what engineers call it, left handers suddenly forgetting how to write, its not so bad on a computer but with a pen it drive you mental because you can't see what you've just written because your left hand is covering it up!

I've had to relearn how to write English 3 times so far, really gets on my nerves, my uncle can't write either unless he's on a computer.

I'll admit I get alot of grammar wrong, like your, you're and their and they're, I just don't get it.

So apologies if my grammar sucks, point it out to me and I'll try to correct it as best I can.

I also can't tell the difference between a Seal and a Sea Lion, but if I was getting attacked by crazed Sea Lions and I shouted for help saying
Sush "HELP ME I'M BEING ATTACKED BY A SEAL!"
and you corrected me with;
You "actually thats not a Seal, thats a Sea Lion"
Then I'd probably punch you in the mouth.

I will admit I am not the best at checking my grammar, and I tend to spell a lot of words wrong.
But I still think that people need to at least try to get it right. when i play MMO's i want people to use a good enough sense of grammar to make it understandable and I don't care if people use stuff like 2day or does ne1 have a blank 4 blank because thats not to hard to understand but stuff with 1337speak and spelling that changes the meaning of what he/she tried to get across infuriates me
