I hate that almost all of my friends are seemingly incapable of spelling words correctly or minding their grammar. It tells me that they don't care about what they write, or who they're writing to.

Do you mean to say that if I were to type out a short message like "the sniper is in the second floor" in the middle of a shootout in an FPS, you would think less of my intelligence because I didn't take the time to capitalize and punctuate it (or make a typo? I only just noticed that. <_<)? I don't think that's reasonable.

I am quite bad over grammar and spelling. I'm trying to be more accepting about modern spelling trends though, since listening to Stephen Fry talking about the history of language.

He quite rightly points out that disregarding centuries of language evolution to berate people on changing their choice and usage of language is just ignorant.

Text-speak for example, can and does really get on my nerves - but I'm trying to accept it as a modern transformation of the language.

course, there are many times, especially with modern internet culture, when people use language without having anything to say. It's the old phrase my dad used to tell us all the time "If you have nothing to say - don't say it".

If you are seriously bothered by the grammatical mistakes you see in random forum posts, there is something seriously wrong with you as a person. If I had to guess, I would say it was purely a matter of a desperate need for control. I should also note that it is maybe one grammar Nazi in three at best that manages to make a post complaining about grammar which does not, itself, have minor grammatical errors.

In all my 12 years of being on the internet, from the escapist to the reviled 4chan (it's not that bad) to online games, I don't think I've ever seen a sentence I've not been able to get the jist of.

You're telling me you have never seen the infamous sentence;

OT: I think of it as a skill I might as well hone. I do have to write essays and coursework with a computer (as do most of you here on the Escapist, I'm sure), so if I am willing to write using proper grammar and spelling there to save time, why would I purposefully make my grammar and spelling worse on the internet? It's like a non-smoker taking a smoke every now and again- eventually it will carry over. I would rather avoid that to be honest.

Spelling and grammar depends on context for me. Facebook or IM is more or less a pidgin between local dialect and the official written Norwegian. The wider the audience the message is supposed to reach, the better the grammar/spelling.

Usually I take care to write proper English on internet fora, but on a place like this? Carnt be fucken bothered unless there's a good reason to.

It is annoying when someone types "sp?" indicating they aren't sure if they spelled something correctly. You're on the internet it's pretty easy to find out how to spell things.

It does bother me a bit but I tend to type as I would speak so I usually ignore grammar.

I only really get annoyed by spelling mistakes though. An example, that is probably grossly overused, would be the spelling of rogue: even when this word is written in several places on the screen some people just have an impossibly hard time hitting the keys in the right order.

I don't pass judgement in gameplay situations though. If we can't talk via voicechat you've gotta type out "shit ive got aggro need peel" and you'd better type it fast. If you type out "Attention team, I seem to have run into a spot of trouble and this beast has become rather aggressive towards me. Would one of you fine tanks please provide assistance and possibly attract his attention for a moment? I would be much obliged" I think I would probably kill you with hate.
