My question is how Spider-Man would escape. Mercer's got blades, shields, and can fly. Spidey has nothing that could slow him down.
Also, Alex made poor decisions because he himself didn't even know who or what he was.
Also, they already developed a cure for the virus.
Alex found a cure for the cure. Then he killed the guy who injected him with the "cure," and everyone else associated with the project.
Spider-Man, while smart, is screwed. Hell, Mercer could just shoot him.

Recently my friend asked me the question, who would win in a fight, Alex Mercer or Spiderman.
I'm disinclined to believe in the existence of this so-called "friend."

Yes. Because a tabloid reporter...wait, sorry, a tabloid PHOTOGRAPHER is immensely more intelligent than a genetic engineer who created a sentient virus.

Spiderman would encounter Alex Mercer, get the shit kicked out of him and barely escape with his life, then develop a cure for the black testicle virus (or whatever) and spray him with it, turning him back into Alex Mercer! Or a corpse, whichever works better.
Ignoring the dozens of problems with your brain-damage fueled theory, I'll simply point out the fact that Mercer is long since dead. That was kind of a major plot point in the game. Mercer is dead. Virus replicates itself as Mercer, thinks himself Mercer.

Also my view has actual evidence behind it (oh golly). Just look at the original comics with Spiderman vs Doctor Octopus, the Vulture and that Lizard thing.
Oh, nevermind. Troll thread is troll. And a terribad troll at that.

You people look at this the wrong way. It's not about what powers and intelligence a person has, it's about WHO WRITES THE COMIC/VIDEO GAME! And the Spiderman intellectual property is more expensive than the Alex Mercer intellectual property. This encounter would be a Spiderman comic, therefore Spiderman would win. At the very least, Spiderman would team up with Mercer to benefit the greater good or something. Also, Alex Mercer is kind of a bad guy and bad guys usually lose when pitted against good guys (note: the infected and military in Prototype weren't good guys per se).

Or is this taking the fun out of such a discussion? I tend to do that.

Seriously, if you know anything from the comics, a single strand of spider web is enough to hang 5 tons of weight in the air. Just imagine how much a punk like Mercer weights, maybe what? 150, 270 pounds at most when he's using his transformed states. Also remember that Spider-Man has fought inhuman psychopaths, evil scientists, armies of goons, and even GODS on special occasions. All of which could easy overpower Alex Mercer in a heartbeat.
And a super virus that can morph its body can be strung up by a simple web, how? And even if he did hang him up, spider web is organic and a pretty key part of Blacklight is that is absorbs organic material to use for its own benefit. Spiderman cannot win against something that is designed to be superior to everything in every way.

Mercer is too overpowered anyway, cole from infamous would be a better candidate. Mercer is overpowered by design. Besides hasn't spider-man believably defeated several people who have almost the same power set?

Spiderman would be eaten. End of story.

Then Alex Mercer would pose as the web-head and make out with Mary Jane.

Because who wouldn't?

You mean the intellectual genetic engineer Alex Mercer who headed the Blacklight project?

My problem is bolded. Alex Mercer doesn't usually let foes escape... leaving Spider bet half dead? More like beating the bollocks out of him and then absorbing him.

Well let's look at this evidence. Alex Mercer can disguise himself as anyone he's absorbed. He can run faster than Spiderman, climb buildings faster than Spiderman and has superhuman reflexes. If all else fails and Spidey lands a few lucky punchest, devestation tentacle barrage, sure Spiderman can dodge eight metal arms, but can he dodge hundreds of lethal tentacles?

EDIT
And yes, Versus threads aren't brilliant.
here's the thing. Even by playing Prototype for just a teensy bit, it quickly becomes clear that Alex Mercer is not a smart guy. He may have been all sciency and shit but IMHO Spiderman is smarter.
And for the "barely escapes with his life" bit, Spiderman has escaped from incredible situations before, he's actually pretty good at that.
Also for your list of powers, they don't really mean as much if Spiderman can outwit him.
Intelligence can only get you so far, though. I'm pretty sure Godzilla could kick Leonardo da Vinci straight up his stale baguette; also I'm fairly certain that most of the mindless jerks I put up with every day could wreck me pretty hard. Also, Mercer would go and eat everyone who has ever known or fought Spidey to figure out all his weaknesses, because he obviously isn't afraid to kill bystanders if you've ever seen him in action. And Mercer has moves like the Critical Pain Graveyard Finisher, which means that he is officially the most badass fighter in history.

Alex Mercer's foes are -SOO- much more deadly and powerful than Spiderman's.

Alex Mercer ftFw! Spiderman's cool of course, but he's not able to decapitate a sea of people with one swipe of a stretched arm.

Spider-Man wins. Why?

Short answer: Good guy wins. No matter what.

Long answer: Spider-Man fights Mercer twice and is overwhelmed both times. Then he discovers the location of the Ancient Scientist Laser Ray Shaman Staff of Absolute Annihilation, which only responds to the whims of the noble. He fights Mercer again and is able shoot one Magic Spaghetti Sauce Laser that only glances the foe. Mercer is hurt but gets away. Then Spider-Man finds the symbiote suit, which gives him enough extra speed and reflexes to get a direct killing shot against Mercer.

This is a retarded question. Anyone who picked spidey just did it because they like him more.

This would be like pitting a 5 year old against a tank.

Mercer outclasses him for speed, manoeuvrability, strength and of course you can't forget his other more deadly powers. Namely eating people that piss him off. Or maybe he's just armour up and laugh as spidey broke his wrist hitting him. I don't know how it would play out. But I know it would end with a very pissed off venom writing a letter of complaint to Mercer about steeling his thunder.
Spiderman would win because of ALL THE Fucking FRIENDS HE HAS. It's not like he has to fight alone, right?

This is a being that can be seperated into as many pieces as you like. As long as there is some form of organic matter around (which there will be thanks to either Spidey and Pals or civvies) he will re-form, using them as material.

Versus thread, scowl, scowl.

But definitely Spiderman, Mercer is far more powerful I concede that, but Spiderman is one of the deadliest foes when the chips are down. For two main reasons, A. He's very smart, while for the most part his natural intelligence is squandered working as a superhero/photographer/science teacher (I guess not any more post BND), many alternate universe have shown him developing to the level of Reed Richards in intelligence. Spider would certainly not confront Mercer a second time without an awesome plan. B. His spider-sense is phenomenly useful when used properly. Spidey has won many (or at least a couple) of fights with his eyes closed, relying on his Spidersense to predict his opponents every move. There's no way Mercer could take him by surprise and Spidey if he plays his cards right could hit him without ever receiving an injury and then use some sort of homemade cure to prevent Mercer from reforming.

Are you being serious? Sarcasm doens't translate well into text.

Spiderman could pick as many friends as he wants. Mercer survived a fucking nuke. He own's spider mand and all his friends then eats them all and takes a power from them.
Can mercer survive being thrown into the Sun? Because Spidey has several friends who could do that.

Of course I don't like the call in friends idea.
