I actually watched the entire series of TNG and Voyager last year. The only two series I got invested in.
I must say, despite thinking TNG was the superior show I found looking back that Voyager was much better.

The quality of a typical Voyager episode is much higher than the quality of a typical TNG.
TNG has the more memorable individual episodes if I had to form a top 10 list between the shows...but as a series, Voyager gets the nod.

Janeway has also become my favorite captain, despite the fact that she doesn't immediately come to mind when I think Star Trek.

I've enjoyed the Enterprise series a lot more than others. Sure it's the weakest series, but it was the most fun. I liked the pioneer spirit the series had.

Anyone who says anything other than Deep Space Nine is either lying, or wrong.

In all seriousness though, every one of the star trek series' started off really shakily. The first few seasons of TNG are embarrassingly bad, but I feel like Deep Space Nine improved the most. Of course, it took a total nosedive in the final season (the majority of which I haven't seen) after they killed off a major character from the main cast.

Voyager I just thought was really lame. It had a sort of sanitised feel to it, that came from an overly comittee led production. None of the characters were really that interesting, at least until Seven of Nine showed up, but by then it was too late.

Enterprise... Well, the less said about that the better.

I hate to say it, but all things considered, DS9 was the best show.

Growing up, I would have said TNG hands down. My favorite characters are all in it, and the adventures they go on are incredible and entertaining. As an adult, I can even watch it and learn a little bit about what humanity needs to overcome, and what ideologies need to be placed on the way-side for the sake of human progress.

All that said, DS9 is still a better show to me. I stopped watching it after TNG was canceled, because I was only really watching it because it aired right after TNG, and it was still Star Trek. Now that I've seen the whole show from front to back, I think I enjoyed it more than I did with TNG. I question how much I'd like it without the background of TNG, and the universe it explored and created, but as I experienced it, it had the best character development, the darkest themes, and was focused around a very intense political conflict that I think was better than the random one-shots that TNG offered us. It just ends up being a better show in the end, even if the adventures aren't quite as grand.

Do yourself a favor and watch TNG front to back, and then follow it up with DS9, front to back. DS9 takes about 3 full seasons to become truly engaging, but TNG takes probably 2-2.5, so it's just par for the course I guess.

Your story reminded me of my expereince with DS9. I decided about 6 years ago to start watching all of Star Trek, and so I made it through TOS-DS9. I eventually caught up on Voyager, but I hated almost all of it (Season 2's Threshold has to be the lowest point in all of TV history, even counting Jersey Shore). I'm repeating the same cycle again this year, because my roommate has not seen any Star Trek, other than the few one-shots he's been introduced to by another friend. He plays Star Trek Online, so he's getting a kick out of the things that he knows from the games. We are going to stop at the end of DS9, because it's all downhill from there. That other friend that showed the highlights to him agrees.

I admit I am highjacking this thread for a moment, but hey, we're talking Star Trek.

I was just watching the 2009 film again, and I caught something that Scotty said. He said that he had tested trans warp beaming on an Admiral's prized Beagle.

I finally caught the name of the Admiral. Archer. As in, Scotty just beamed away Johnathan Archer's dog, Porthos.

The only one that I've watched a significant amount of is the original series, so I guess I'll go with that one. I'm a terrible nerd.

However, my opinion is not completely unjustifiable, as TOS has the episode Trouble With Tribbles, which is the greatest thing to ever be aired on television.

DS9 had a sequel episode where the main cast goes back in time to that episode. WHERE IS YOUR GOD NOW!?!?!

OT: That is a tough question. After much deliberation, I think that I liked DS9 the best. I rather liked that the entire show had one continuous story arc, and it had some great characters. I also like Deep Space 9 more than the Enterprise D, as a main location. Plus, Jadzia Dax was hot as hell. :D

Oh snap. You have single-handedly convinced me to watch DS9. Well done.

You know, there were only a few things great about DS9: Odo(except when he would ***** about loving kira), Quark, Garrek, Doctor Bashir, Chief O'brian. And Worf when he came on of course. Everyone else sucked, the whole Emissairy thing was really really stupid. Voyager was 2 times better, 10 times when kes went bye bye and 7 of 9 came in. Of course I voted TNG though, Patrick Stewart and Brent Spiner absolutely acted circles around everyone. As for Enterprise, well it became watchable after season 2.

captcha: Dinosaur Spaceship, heh, reminds me of that dumb voyager episode where they find dinosaurs that left earth and evolved into humanoid form, soo dumb lol

I voted TOS--no doubt in part due to nostalgia, but it was also incredibly
forward-thinking for it's time, pushed out the boundaries of television
and had some really deep episodes.
Also managed to sneak the occasional bellydancer or girl in a bellydance
outfit on, for which I shall forever love them. Go ahead and judge me.

I liked DS9 because it was the first Star Trek series with an actual story line that spanned episodes. I also really liked the Defiant, Garak, etc...

Slightly off-topic: Did anyone read any of the books on the Four Years War? Basically first contact with the Klingons was an actual war that ended with the formation of the Neutral Zone. I had hopes that Enterprise was going to be a series about that, because that would have been cool. Oh well.

Indeed. It also gave us this gem.
Also, look up The Great Tribble Hunt.

I don't care what anyone says, Enterprise was my favorite. Scott Bakula as Captain Archer was awesome!

Even though it was a movie: Galaxy Quest

on topic though...

I went with TNG. While I've watched all of voyager, it does rely a bit heavily on technobabbling away everything (it also has a couple of annoying cases where it basically takes established rules, breaks them for an episode, then acts like nothing ever happened.) I still think it is a good show, but I felt TNG was more together with everything (helped it was setting everything TOS didn't).

Also, I'll give a nod to Enterprise. It wasn't terrible, and it certainly was a nice touch giving the intermediary (though the problem with prequels, is the tech will always look cleaner than the later (but older created) shows, simply by virtue of when it was made) from where the TNG:going into the past with borg movie showed and how TOS started.

Also, while not entirely on subject, I do think the 2009 movie was a good choice for the new Star Trek movie, and better handled than I worried. I'll be curious to see how they follow up on it.

For me, hands down TNG.

However, it should be remember that TOS was much more daring and inventive. Nothing much like it had been down before. When TNG came around, they could build on that.

TNG is my favorite, but I really enjoyed Voyager. I think it was because that was the only series I watched consistently while it was on the air. The others I watched in reruns, on borrowed DVDs or streaming on-line.

I wonder if anyone will bring up the animated series. Would it be considered part of TOS, and who would consider it a detriment?

Definitely DS9. I've stated my reasons before, but the simplistic version is as follows:
While Picard and Data are excellent characters, they (along with Q in his episodes) pretty much entirely carried TNG on their shoulders. Oh, sure, Geordie and Riker and Worf were all pretty good, but they never had the same presence that Patrick Stewart commanded.

DS9, on the other hand, didn't really have a single overwhelming presence like that. All of the characters meshed very well, creating a much more cohesive and inter-twined story. Also, it has some of the best character dynamics ever in Bashir-Garak, Sisko-Dukat, and Odo-Quark, to say nothing of all the other tight character dynamics they established over the course of that show.

EDIT: Also, I'd like to say that I think it's hilarious that Enterprise has more votes than TOS. Are we showing our average age here, Escapist?
