Love Star Trek.

Hate Star Wars. Seriously, don't like it. At. All. I might not hate it if Lucas never made anything other than 4,5 and 6. But he's a dick and the later movies are shit and that makes me hate it.

I used to think Starwars was awesome, but around the time that Episode 1 launched, it turned to shit. The games stopped being cool, the new movies were lack luster, and Lucas started milking the name of the franchise more than the actual content. Games like Jedi Knight were only "star wars" in name. The game had little to do with anything we had seen in the movies at that point, while the game was expanding on the universe itself.

Now we're stuck with games like The Force Unleashed, and it's lightsabers, super god-like force powers, and Darth Vader, all to poorly fill in holes in the main story arc that no one needed filled.

Star Trek on the other hand is still a masterpiece. I'm ignoring the later 2 series, but TOS through DS9 are great stories with great characters. Characters who will walk you through what it means to be human, while exploring a galaxy that never really changes, despite the advances in culture and technology.

EDIT:
Just powerful scenes like this one:
Out of context it might be a bit confusing, but the Cardassian is trying to break Picard's will. Getting him to lie about something he knows is incorrect was one of those things (insisting that there were 5 lights, when there clearly were 4). He was being even more of a bastard in this scene, because he knew that Picard was free to go. He just wanted to stab at him once more for his stubbornness.

For the record, I've enjoyed both, but I have to say that Star Trek really fared poorly when it went into films. The only good ones in my book are Wrath of Khan and First Contact. The rest were basic drivel.
Did you not like The Voyage Home or The Undiscovered Country?

"CAPTAIN, THERE BE WHALES HERE!"
It's a matter of personal taste. While I did find Undiscovered Country to be LESS bad than some of the others, I do not like the movie. As for The Voyage Home . . . . you want to watch it, then enjoy. I'll be over here watching Babylon 5. Or Farscape. Or Firefly.

Star Trek because of Captain Kirk and Picard, mainly Picard.

Seeing as I have never seen anything about Star Trek, I'll have to let my vote go to Star Wars.

I like both franchises. Overall the best storytelling and most original concepts came from the first three star wars films. However i felt i brought into the star trek universe considerably more than the star wars universe. Its just little things like technology in star wars seeming to get better the further back in time you go but it all adds up for me.

I would like to throw in two scenes of my own. Hell, we could do this all day with DS9 and TNG.

This one really speaks to me. We shouldn't judge people just because of where they are from or who they are associated with. I know that's an obvious thing but this scene shows how things can go wrong though people may still have good intentions.

Don't need to say much about this one. It's the first truly epic TNG episode and it showed what the series could achieve in the future.
Thank you. Your choice in clips was far better than mine.

Really, it is kinda unfair to compare the two series, but they do embody Science-Fiction vs Science-Fantasy. Fantasy is fun, but it rarely can be used in the same way fiction can. Fantasy just lets you explore the limits of your imagination, but fiction lets you explore things that merely may not have happened yet. It's still bound to reality, and we all can learn from reality, not our imaginations.

At least that's my take on it. If this question is boiling down to Sci-fi vs Sci-fant, then that is a good question in of itself.

Star Wars. It's a fun adventure.
For some reason to me, Star Trek always seemed to... full of itself. I don't know how else to explain it, and I have to admit I am a little biased since I was raised by a mother who knew every single, and this is not exageration, line ever said in Star Wars (New Hope).

Hmm which one jumped the shark first
Well, Voyager came out years before the Special Editions did.....

Yeah, Voyager is kinda shitty. Don't get me wrong, Janeway is great, but she's a bipolar maniac who will risk her crew member's safety one episode for an alien species, and then blow another alien species to bits the next episode if they get in her way.

Plus they turned the Borg from a credible threat into frankenstein robo zombies. I mean come on. One Borg Cube almost assimilated Earth, with Enterprise only winning through sheer luck.

Voyager took on an entire fucking fleet of Borg Cubes and tore them to pieces using bullshit technobabble.

I'm going to go with star trek, even though it has its camp moments it never looses sight of what makes it enjoyable, star wars, yes i love star wars too, but it did start to loose it at episode 6 (fucking ewoks) and then completely screwed the pooch in episodes 1-3 (not terrible movies, but not as good as the pedigree they came from)

Star trek gave us a lot of incredible moments, some bold and deep storylines on the nature of humanity, and yes campy moments, it made a balding, middle aged thespian sexy as hell. i find the characters richer, the universe deeper and more complex, i loved the shows, all of them, even ent and voyager, the performances from the actors were consistently good too, unlike star wars, with natalie portman's wooden emotions and hayden's inability to replicate anything resembling a character.

Star trek has been very good with it's writers too, which tends to happen with a television series where they can bring writers in and out.

now for the bulk, the franchise is immense and what they did on television was astounding

you had

Original, The next Generation, Deep Space 9, Voyager, Enterprise, movies like Star Trek: The motion Picture, Wrath of Kahn, Search for Spock, The Voyage Home, Final Frontier, the extremely topical Undiscovered country (which remains my second favorite next to wrath) Generations, First Contact, Insurrection, Nemesis and the reboot.

not to mention books penned by former series alumni like William Shatner and Jonathan Frakes.

besides all that, i just never found star wars all that deep thematically or in it's narrative, good was good, evil was evil and grey didn't actually exist because the characters were flat stereotypes

You just said everything that I wanted to say in my first post, but I got lazy about it.

Don't forget awesome and memorable villians like the Borg and Klingons (well, sometimes), and I honestly can't name any from Star Wars outside of just coping out and saying the Empire. Plus, I enjoyed the Star Trek movies way more than I did with Star Wars, even Nemesis where I thought it wasn't as good.

The Next Generation was the best version in my opinion.

I love the Klingons actually, the dynamic they have with the federation is similar to so many different nations on earth, they can be friendly, cold, at all out war and even work together, i also thought DS9 did a great job fleshing out the Cardassians, the shows tend to show the species they treat as antagonists in a very realistic light with many shades of grey between them and realistic motivations.

Well, and the part where they both have futuristic tech and spaceships flying around blowing eachother up and such.

I like the Klingons too, and I thought they were a nice contrast to the Federation. One is all peaceful and would rather do negotiations while the Klingons would rather shot first and ask questions later.

I like the Borg just as much because of how merciless they are and their arcs are just great and have asesome story telling. They're also a little scary just because of how uncaring they are towards everyone and just do things under the collective.

I liked DS9 as well, and I thought Captain Sisko [footnote]I meant Sisko not Sheridan. YOU SAW NOTHING.[/footnote] was an awesome Captain and fit the series rather well. I didn't know much of the Cardassians until that show and I love them for it. Worf and Mr. O'Brian was an added bonus for me. :D

That's implied by the "Star" part of their names. Star Wars was set "a long time ago...", not very futuristic now is it?
