If your're a fan of the Stargate Sci-Fi TV franchise then you'll probably know that tonight May 9th sees the last ever episode of Stargate Universe, and that there are no current plans to bring it, or the rest of the franchise, back to our screens. So this is, basically, the last episode of Stargate for at least the next few years.

This is significant because A) It's an awesome show, and B) there has been a Stargate series on air for the last 13 years.

I was wondering what people's thoughts on this are. What do you think of the Stargate franchise? Are you sad it's going off-air? and will you be watching the finale tonight?

FYI the final SGU episode "Gauntlet" airs tonight at 9pm on SyFy in the USA.

This also seems a good enough place to plug my <url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/groups/view/Stargate-Fan-Club>Stargate user group.

EDIT: Note that the poll's not really about whether you'll watch it tonight live on SyFy, but whether you'll be watching it in whatever capacity (online, DVR, local station, etc) at some point soon.

EDIT THE SECOND: If you're going to discuss any spoilers then put them in tags for those who haven't seen the episode yet (it doesn't air in other countries until later on).

I didn't really like SGU. SG1 was awesome, until season 8. SGA was good. SGU was just....meh.

Still, its sad that there will be no more. MGM are in such trouble, and (in my mind at least) a big part of that is that they didn't capitalise on stargate very well. Look at star trek and star wars - not just the series, films, computer games and all the rest. How many stargate games have you seen?

I'm a massive fan of both SG-1 and Atlantis. So much so that I could probably give you a rough synopsis of any episode from either given just the episode title. But I just never cared of Universe. I lost interest and stopped watching it a few episodes before the end of the first season.

I'm not sorry to see it go. It wasn't anything like Stargate.

Pretty much what Phisfood and Kiefer13 said, I loved SG-1 and Atlantis. I watched the first 5 episodes or so of Universe, pretty "meh".

Didn't live up to Atlantis and SG-1 IMHO.

If you ever get the chance I'd suggest you watch the second season. The show really hit it's stride. It is a major departure from the other series, but it does come into it's own.

The first half of Season 1 wasn't that good, and I lost interest in the show at that point. Like I said in my previous post it gets a lot better after that point. Actually watch the episode "Space" it was the first one of the second half of season 1, and it's pretty good (with lots of the action that was missing up to that point).

It is not like stargate for me, I watched them all with joy expect this one.
In this one it was about the ship and not about the stargate and the fliming style was more like battlestar gallicta(not that it is bad but just annoys me)so this is another franchise ruined for me

I didn't like SG:U because they somehow managed to forget the funny. The reason I always liked SG:1 & SG:A was because it always felt like they were making fun of themselves/the viewer and always tried to keep things relatively light. In SG:U I thought the premise of the show really had promise, but I watched the 1st half of season and it just didn't feel like an SG series. I'll probably end up picking it up cheap on DVD to complete my collection, but I'm not sorry its gone.

imo SG:U is pretty much lost in space. I really do not like this show, considering they stopped producing atlantis and made it end so completely fucking wrong so they could fund SG:U

I've watched it all so far and will be a shame to see it go but i do agree with the others that it isnt as good as SG:1 or SG:A. SG:U Seems like its trying to be to much like battlestar galatica and dosnt pull it off as well.

SG:U forgot what made Stargate good, lost interest after the first half of season 1.

Yeah its not the same as the other Stargate series which where awesome but we've already had two series of the same thing I think they made the right decision to change the show and I think they have made a very good series that just wasn't given a chance by many Stargate fans because it was different and also time slots changing and MGM going bankrupt didn't help.

Such a shame it ended as it had really found it's footing and therefore a place into my heart though I doubt the viewer numbers could have really picked up.

I'm going to have to dress my cat up as a SG member and have him fight the evil goa'uld System lord Pieceofstringius for my kicks now. I'll tell you all how it goes.

I agree with most of the critism of SG:U but I also am disappointed that SG1 and SG Atlantis fans gave up on Universe so quickly.

SGU suffered from repeated themes of basic survival early on (air, water, etc...) and needed to move into more of the story faster. Also, the soap opera drama was way too high when it first started.

But SGU really turned into a decent story in my opinion and I'm glad I stuck with it. The characters really grew on me and now I'm sad to see it go.

At first I was mad at Syfy, which has some terrible shows that seem to get more viewers (like Ghost Hunters) but in the end SGU didn't have the ratings... maybe some of the blame still goes to Syfy for moving the show around, but I also think some old Stargate fans shouldn't have been so stubborn about SGU being different when compared to the previous shows (or being stubborn by boycotting SGU because they felt SG:A ended too soon)... I guess this would relate to the recent Escapist article about gaming sequels -- sometimes "too different" appears to be fixing something that isn't broken.

I'd urge Stargate fans that gave up on SGU to pick back up midway through season 1 and also watch season 2. SGU does get better. Just because it doesn't have a wisecracking leader in it doesn't mean its not Stargate. I normally don't do this, but I'm even considering buying Season 2 on DVD to record my vote that I did like the show.

Ah well, life goes on even if Stargate doesn't.

SGU suffered from The Gilligan Issue. No matter what happens on a episode you know:

1. They won't kill off major characters.
2. They will never get home (at least until the series finale...maybe).

#2 sucked the fun out of the show.

(Watched season 1 and the first few of S2. The rest are on my DVR...langishing)

Loved the different tone of the show, and I've seen every episode of every Stargate show. It's a shame they canceled it, i'm sure it made even more people stop seeing it before it finished. And the ending for tonight's episode, hmm...

I watched it, but only so I could say I watched what may be the last episode of Stargate ever. I finally got into SG1 in November or December of last year, and kiss of death that I am, the entire franchise gets wiped out around six months later. Maybe I should start watching pro wrestling on SyFy, and see if I can get that cancelled too...

I loved SGU - Atlantis suffered from that creeping syndrome that long-running sci-fi (like Star Trek) tends to get, where it becomes outright silly (you know what I'm talking about, Voyager!). Universe got it grounded somewhat more, and it felt a lot more like they were in peril than the folks stuck in the Pegasus galaxy.
