Well, the alternatives are the retarded DRM schemes of Ubisoft and EA, so its definitely not the worst, and I'll gladly deal with it than other forms of DRM.

It also helps that its a very fine IM service, and nice store.

I don't like how some people who don't want to use it are forced to however. People should have a choice.

I like the set up and the freedom to download alot of PC games, even though you have to pay for most of the games its still 100% worth it. I really dont see any reson why to hate it

Well I've had some problems with the offline mode functionality before, but nowadays it's all roses. Having a little box pop up out of nowhere telling me Team fortress is updating is pretty exciting too. And the steam community business in game is very handy. As long as I can play all my single player games offline without any hiccoughs it's fine and dandy. Also, I have a 1mb internet connection and it's fine for me, so I don't know how everyone else is complaining about slow downloads...
1mb! that is a lot. average here: 50 kb to maybe 200kb, max 1 mb for a couple of secs.
50 kilobytes is more or less Dial up! That's pretty bad... Can you even watch youtube videos with that?

BTW, Why use steam power when electricity is available?

EDIT: Although, I see someone has beat me to the punch. Beat me to it, spiked it, and now everybody's gettin' silly.

If you know how to use it just barely, you may hate it, if you spend the time to get familiar with it, you will realized that it is far better then disk versions, has a huge support database and network and can access anywhere from any computer (yes, now mac too!), beats the **** out of carrying/storing around a giant disk case the size of 2 large textbooks. If you have an issue, report it, and they will (99.99% of the time) walk you through fixing it or fix it in a patch soon. my only complaint is the (small) lag in VoIP, but having that active in a game that does not naturally support voip is wonderful, never had an unresolved issue last more the 4 days on any of my 4 computers of various upgrade levels (from craptop to gaming machine).
Sorry for the rant, i love steam and i dont get some people that give up without even trying.

I love automatic patching. Do you know how hard it is to patch BF2 WITHOUT auto patch?

Its not the greatest thing ever, but is still pretty good.

I can talk to my friends while playing games on the same computer at the same time. That's pretty useful.

I guess lucky for me, my internet is very good. Updates usually take less than 90 seconds.

It seems i am unable to hate steam, yay me!

It's great! Now, if only we could force all developers to release their games there...

Let me see in my experience Steam:

1. Is more reliable than most games or indeed Windows.
2. Keeps itself and all my installed games up to date automatically.
3. Pauses updates while i play so i don't lose performance.
4. Lets me buy at anytime of the day or night, and be playing before mailorder could possibly get it to me.
5. Lets me chat (and doesnt care if what games if any both participants are playing) and browse the web in game.
6. Organises all my games in one place.
7. Allows me to install a game anywhere with internet (and if i don't have internet I'm sure as hell not going to be in a place with 30+ game dvds).
8. Has a neglegible performance impact on my PC.
9. Keeps a safe free backup of all my games with it.
10. Lets me play without a net connection.
11. Allows me to install my games on as many PCs as I like.
12. Lets me see what my mates are playing.
13. Will sync game preferences and even save games accross all my PC's and in theory my mac.
14.While it can be expensive, it has the ebst deals i've ever seen.
15. Has never made a mistake in what I've orderd.

Its a good service. Cheap game deals, in-game chat, great support with problems and its easy to install the games.

I was fine with steam until the conversion of money to euros. After that I've hated them since...
