The subject says it all. I personally prefer Steampunk, all the whirring gears and high tech cowboys intrest me. Although I have to say, Cyberpunk is pretty cool too. And for all you who have no idea what i'm talking about, Steampunk and Cyberpunk are not types of music, but literature and entertainment settings.

EDIT: thank you all for getting this thread on the hot threads list! I give you all some cake!

Sorry, the cake is a lie. But really, you must be pretty dim for not expecting this.

I like both, Bioshock is one of my favourite games of all time, but I really like the Cyber-Punk style shown in the anime 'Ergo Proxy'.

Also, Cyber-Punk can actually be used as a genre of music but I know that's not what you meant.

I downright love Steampunk.. It adds a very whimsical feel to everything. Also, it's entertaining how the machines and technology work in the genre, at least to me, because everything is simple mechanics.

.....And airship pirates. They are too freaking cool.

I like both, Cyberpunk has Gibson computers that need to be hacked and Steampunk has awesome steam replacements for normal stuff.

Steampunk, I just love the way you can get giant robots and stuff made out of cogs and gears.

In game and literature? Cyberpunk.

If it was real? Steampunk.

Cyber is dark and edgy and full of mind melt conspiracies.
Steam is whimsical and full of airships and wrench wenches.

I've got one name to mention: Leonardo Da Vinci.

Steampunk wins.

EDIT:
I don't care if Leonardo isn't steampunk. They're both still awesome.

I say Cyberpunk, but I love Steampunk as well. I love the Victorian look that comes with steampunk, but prefer the highly computerized aspect of Cyberpunk.

If there was a Cyberpunk game with the Victorian look, I would be all over that.

What are you talking about? How is Da Vinci Steampunk? None of his inventions in theory worked on steam. You lose.

Oh well, I'm not bothered about details anyway.

Da Vinci's more crazy inventions are often used in Steampunk settings.

That is besides the point. Nothing he invented was based on steam power at all.

Cyberpunk also rules because it has Molly Mirrorshades. No female character kicks more ass in any "Cyber/Steam-Punk" genre creation ever. Molly RULES. Got to love those Wet Wired reflexes and Razor fingernails.

Not really, it's a damned good starting point for steampunk. One of the most important parts of steampunk is simply tinkering around, inventing. Da Vinci was a master inventor, far ahead of his time. And that's basically what steampunk is about: inventing random stuff far ahead of your time. True, Da Vinci didn't use steam engines, but Da Vinci does embody the spirit of steampunk.

That said, I'll pick steampunk, but damn it's a hard choice because I really love both. But if I had to choose...ahhh, that bold explorer-spirit which came with the scientific advances in the 19th century, just inventing for the sake of it, all the brass and copper, cogs and steam all cobbled together into giant airships and automatons. And the icing on the cake, Victorian fashion! Gods I want to control a giant, steam belching mechanical spider (yes I did like Wild Wild West) whilst wearing an evening coat, a top hat and a monocle. And of course don't forget about the evil maniacal laughter. And the cup of tea.
