In game and literature? Cyberpunk.

If it was real? Steampunk.

Cyber is dark and edgy and full of mind melt conspiracies.
Steam is whimsical and full of airships and wrench wenches.
I've always been an avid fan of Steampunk what with me being a huge Charles Babbage fan, but you've added an option I didn't consciously know existed.

Wrench Wenches, I want some, several of them, I want them right now.

Steampunk, though I prefer my own unique, hard-to-explain brand for my novel, a contributing factor of Steampunk, the Enlightenment, the French Revolution and the 1700s

Cyberpunk, I can't explain why, it just feels like one of the most awesome sci-fi genres there is.

Just don't piss them off, those wrenches are heavy.

I find steampunk far more compelling because it blends old and new seamlessly.

And because it just looks so quirky.

I do like both, but I grew up with cyberpunk, and to me the word cyberpunk implies more depth than steampunk, which is mainly a more 'shallow' visual style. Sure, there are some really fascinating steampunk/alternate history stories, like one I read as a kid (but can't remember the name of now) in an alternate 1960's where the most advanced technology was the steam engine, as the development of technology had been slowed down to a crawl because the reforms in christianity in the middle ages never happened, and the 'dark ages' were extended for several more centuries.
Cyberpunk includes a lot of transhumanistic themes, the idea of removing the line between man and machine, while modern steampunk, sadly, mainly seem to be about depicting current day technology but with rust and ridiculous and impractical amounts of gears and valves.

Hm.. I like Steampunk, but I'm gonna choose Cyberpunk because it's just a little bit cooler.

So the usual line of "wheres my dinner *****?" after i've had a hard day gambling away our savings is a bad thing to say?.

Man these wenches are difficult to read.

I like the simplicity of Steampunk. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy Cyberpunk themed things, but Steampunk is better for me.

If had to choose between the two, I'd go with Steampunk, but in all honesty I prefer a good mixture of Steampunk and Cyberpunk, like in in Warhammer 40K.

Obviously a lot the technology is very Cyberpunk, with people having cybernetic implants, people being linked directly to their vehicles etc, but the aesthetic design of a lot of the technology is very Cyberpunk, with lots of brass and skulls, brass computers or logic engines which have ivory keys like typewriters, and which load programs via punch card readers and display their results on ticker tapes.

Also despite their advanced Cyberpunk technology, they have a rather Victorian view of it, regarding it as magic, only understood by Tech-Priests.
I think the Warhammer 40K universe was Cyberpunk during the Dark Age of Technology, but has since regressed to Steampunk after the Age of Strife.

This is the impression I've got from reading a lot of the novels.
