What is your opinion on stem cell research? Personally I'm pro-stem cell research because of stories like this [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/18.250845-Stem-cells-have-cured-an-HIV-patient?page=1] and this [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/107529-Magic-Gun-Sprays-Skin-Cells-to-Heal-Burns-Almost-Instantly]

Pro, definitely pro.

It's useful for humanity. That's one reason to slap anyone against it across the head.

Natural selection might come into play with all those religious nut-jobs that are against it. They're dying of something that can be cured by stem cells? Hah, fuck them.

pro, with what can be achieved by it, it's well worth it. sure there are ethical issues but it can vastly improve people's lives

Go for it. I doubt you are going to find much anti on the Escapist. (Its kind of a liberal website what with all the armchair commies around.)

Hell I am as unliberal as they come and I am pro. If it saves lives using something that would only be destroyed anyway then why not?

I won't pretend to know all the arguments of the anti side. Apart from religious grounds I don't understand why people would be against research that could end up saving countless lives. As I have yet to hear an informed counter-argument it may be interesting to see if one is made in this thread. I voted pro.

(Captcha you can't ask me to write Beta-blockers with a beta symbol, that's just unfair!)

Wow, I honestly did not expect that poll to be 100% positive. Not that I mind, since I voted that way too...

Pro. Even if they don't allow test tube babies for it, someone has got to get rid of those aborted fetuses.
Who'd've predicted that the future of humanity may be saved by excess teenage pregnancies, eh?

OT: Pro. The benefits, and sheer variety of potential applications, vastly outweigh the cost. That said, I'm not exactly in a position to provide raw materials...

For as much as I know about it, I'm very much for it. In the same way I'm pro-adoption. It seems like its research (and applied) potential is immense and valuable, much how I support research in nanotechnology and artificial intelligence despite their "risks". The only difference is that I don't believe stem-cell research "harms"[footnote]I am deliberately leaving my definition of harm undefined here. If I had to explain it, I would probably have to put it in context with my entire world view, and that would take a while[/footnote], or have the potential to harm, anyone.

And that might come contrary to my personality, as just a few days ago I felt quite sad for having to pluck one of two sprouts from my flower pot. I had to kill a plant to make the other survive. It was a very strange ethical dilemma for me.

I am totally for stem cell research but utterly against other genetic-modification type things, namely selecting embryos for 'good' genes, something only the rich would be able to do, making their babies smarter and fitter and better looking and shit. The thought of people just being born biologically superior is pretty frightening.

Whatever, just wash your hands.
Id be happier with it if they could find a way to actually grind up new born babies so it would be more effective, but Im just annoyed by people bitching about it

Deffinately pro, but then again, its part of my job so I'd be a bit screwed if I didn't like it.
The nay-sayers seem to think that it involves creating babies and putting them in blenders. While it may be true we discovered foetal stem cells first, its not like thats the only source.

Using cells from a dead fetus to perform research that could save many lives in the future, instead of just destroying it? Yeah, that sounds like an abominable practice that should be condemned without hesitation

Hmm. I never thought of genetic engineering in this way. It does actually sound a bit too close to Hitler's master race ideas for my liking.

Lol, there are no anti stem cell research people here!XD
