Sorry, that post was too long and too depressing. I'm fucking deliriously happy and I haven't noticed any miserable people around here so I don't see the point in this thread...

Hmmm... Being optimistic.

Oh! I got it! I'm no longer in writhing agony anymore after the dental surgery =D And my car was repaired recently with something Minor! It was just the alternator belt! Isn't that great? On the by, it was not a tumor after all! =D

Bloody well I need to work on this.

I'm currently reading a book about a guy trying to murder two cats. Cat on the Edge is the title. Pretty standard fantasy book from around the 80's.

I definitely don't doubt that many charities are in it for the wrong reasons, but its hard to make an argument that states we are less equip to deal with the world's problems now than we were a decade ago. Communication has opened up A LOT of opportunities for people to share ideas and solutions internationally and its only logical to conclude that as a whole, if the global stage continues to evolve as a global community that these problems will be solved far faster than they ever have been.

With that said, I am a tragic optimist among a sea of pessimists XP
I agree, we definately do have the resources to end world hunger ten times over but the people who hold the resources only use it for self-profit

As a wise man once said, if we took the billions America alone spends on their military each year we can end world hunger and explore the universe together in peace forever and ever

I'm pretty optimistic myself but that doesn't mean I should just ignore the reasons my dreams won't come true, you are still preaching to the choir here, we all want to fix the world but those who hold the real amounts of money simply want to make sure they stay rich for security reasons

"business" means "to make money" and it's businessmen who run the world, nothing EVER happens if someone isn't making a profit

This isn't pessimism, it's just reality...

I totally get what you are saying and it will certainly slow the process down, but the fact is we ARE making progress in those areas... albeit extremely slow. To simplify my point of view: eventually things will get to where people today could say, "We did it! We saved the world!" However the people of that age will just be echoing the complaints we have now. The world being shit is a relative concept I believe :D

None of these things says anything about a persons level of happiness. In fact thinking about 1, 4 and 5 have increased my level of happiness. But I agree with the sentiments of your post that there is no reason for a person to be perpetually depressed. Unfortunately that is something each person has to figure out for themselves.

I am nothing but electric signals and chemical reactions. I say this because I am a biologist, not because I am miserable. I'm quite happy and I know that my feelings are chemical reactions. Why should that make me depressed? I got chemical reactions that makes me enjoy things!

You caught me at a bad time. I'm usually pretty happy, but now I'm miserable because I think I might have offended some people and I'm pretty sure they all hate me. It's a horrible feeling and it's completely my fault...

ON THE UPSIDE! The new episode of MLP airs tomorrow (can't wait), and I'm currently reading some damn good fanfiction. I've also gotten to playing Fallout 2 and it's awesome. Also, next week I'm going home to see my family for the first time in over a month and a half, yay!

Now I feel slightly better, thanks OP!

You make it sound so easy

Seriously though. A little complaining doesn't make you miserable. We're not built to be at peace and content with ourselves all the time. Stuff is going to annoy people, stuff is going to make people feel bad, sometimes small, insignificant things, sometimes huge freaking deals. That's just the way it's gonna be, it doesn't make much sense but we'll probably go crazy if we try to deny it.

Anyway, I'm not much of a reader. Been toying with the idea of picking up that fancy fantasy book that HBO made a fancy fantasy TV-series of. Can anyone recommend it?

Poor people now = x1000 times better off than poor people 100 years ago.
So if I lose an arm in a car accident, you're going to tell me I should be happy and cheerful because I could have lost both?

Sorry, but "it could be worse" doesn't ring like a legitimate reason to fake it and just keep smiling when you're not happy.

Yes, I know people who walk around with rainclouds on their heads can be exasperatingly hard to deal with, but that's the same with those hyped up happy happy ones, they're just as annoying.

What does car accidents have to do with poor people as a whole? Everyone in this generation of poor people were victims of car accidents of course they would be worse off! Joking aside, I am not saying you should be happy because people had it worse than you "back in the day". I am simply critiquing the sentiment I often hear from others who claim that, "the world is in such a dark place right now." Not once did I imply that everyone should be happy because they live now, nor did I say they should be happy for any reason at all. I simply made the point that yesterday was worse than today. Its not the state of the world that is your problem, its your situation.

I'm about as happy as a guy who lives with a low income can be, I could be happier, but I could also have less debt problems and less financial bs taking up time that I could be doing funner stuff, like working on my car(which costs money for parts) or seeing awesome movies(which I rather like seeing at the theater which costs money) or going to the museum which I haven't done in a long time(cuz it's expensive, costs more than going to a movie and buying popcorn for some reason), but otherwise, I hang out with friends of mine, I date women(as there are tons of options that cost little to no money, taking a walk for instance), and I play games on my PC which of course I already have due to the glorious sales steam offers :D.

I'm not starving, I have a place to live, I have other amenities! I'm good!

Despite feeling like I'm not going anywhere with my life right now; I have good friends and I have a lot of fun every day.

I like the novel IT, quite an amusing one.

And those who lose "faith in humanity" because of silly people really need to learn tolerance. More so than myself, in fact.

Everything is a waste of time if you look at it from the right perspective, but, overall, I'm pretty content.
