Sorry, that post was too long and too depressing. I'm fucking deliriously happy and I haven't noticed any miserable people around here so I don't see the point in this thread...
I agree, we definately do have the resources to end world hunger ten times over but the people who hold the resources only use it for self-profitFappy said:I definitely don't doubt that many charities are in it for the wrong reasons, but its hard to make an argument that states we are less equip to deal with the world's problems now than we were a decade ago. Communication has opened up A LOT of opportunities for people to share ideas and solutions internationally and its only logical to conclude that as a whole, if the global stage continues to evolve as a global community that these problems will be solved far faster than they ever have been.
With that said, I am a tragic optimist among a sea of pessimists XP
I totally get what you are saying and it will certainly slow the process down, but the fact is we ARE making progress in those areas... albeit extremely slow. To simplify my point of view: eventually things will get to where people today could say, "We did it! We saved the world!" However the people of that age will just be echoing the complaints we have now. The world being shit is a relative concept I believeShivarage said:I agree, we definately do have the resources to end world hunger ten times over but the people who hold the resources only use it for self-profitFappy said:I definitely don't doubt that many charities are in it for the wrong reasons, but its hard to make an argument that states we are less equip to deal with the world's problems now than we were a decade ago. As a wise man once said, if we took the billions America alone spends on their military each year we can end world hunger and explore the universe together in peace forever and ever
I'm pretty optimistic myself but that doesn't mean I should just ignore the reasons my dreams won't come true, you are still preaching to the choir here, we all want to fix the world but those who hold the real amounts of money simply want to make sure they stay rich for security reasons
"business" means "to make money" and it's businessmen who run the world, nothing EVER happens if someone isn't making a profit
This isn't pessimism, it's just reality...
None of these things says anything about a persons level of happiness. In fact thinking about 1, 4 and 5 have increased my level of happiness. But I agree with the sentiments of your post that there is no reason for a person to be perpetually depressed. Unfortunately that is something each person has to figure out for themselves.SadakoMoose said:1. "Oh my god, do I exist?"

So if I lose an arm in a car accident, you're going to tell me I should be happy and cheerful because I could have lost both?Fappy said:Poor people now = x1000 times better off than poor people 100 years ago.
What does car accidents have to do with poor people as a whole? Everyone in this generation of poor people were victims of car accidents of course they would be worse off! Joking aside, I am not saying you should be happy because people had it worse than you "back in the day". I am simply critiquing the sentiment I often hear from others who claim that, "the world is in such a dark place right now." Not once did I imply that everyone should be happy because they live now, nor did I say they should be happy for any reason at all. I simply made the point that yesterday was worse than today. Its not the state of the world that is your problem, its your situation.Vegosiux said:So if I lose an arm in a car accident, you're going to tell me I should be happy and cheerful because I could have lost both?Fappy said:Poor people now = x1000 times better off than poor people 100 years ago.
Sorry, but "it could be worse" doesn't ring like a legitimate reason to fake it and just keep smiling when you're not happy.
Yes, I know people who walk around with rainclouds on their heads can be exasperatingly hard to deal with, but that's the same with those hyped up happy happy ones, they're just as annoying.
