Actually Man of Steel made almost twice as much box office as Batman Begins, so yeah, it definitely could have happened. And no it wouldn't have been amazing, it would have been terrible, which is my point.
What does Man of Steel have to do with this? You said BVS.

Well no one thinks is going to be any good, do they? The massive shit that was BvS proves, at least to me and almost everyone who saw that trainwreck, that the DC people don't know what they're doing.

so yeah, do all the reshoots you need to, but you're missing the point if you think a movie needs a mandatory minimum number of jokes to be considered good.

MCerberus said:
So was Harley stealing from the store in the trailer the only joke in the entire movie, or is this just a reaction to Deadpool + BvS hate?
To be fair, Harley does make a 'joke' about voices in her head. So that's two whole jokes in a 2 hour comedy movie.

Because you said the same thing wouldn't happen because Batman Begins was successful. I'm just pointing out that money wise, Man of Steel was more successful and this happened.

Man of Steel was more successful and BVS happened.

That's a different story.

I really don't like WB's grimdark approach to DC. You just can't build an entire series, at least not a superhero series, to complete darkness. They need to have levity, moments of light and humanity so that the dark moments have something to work with. People say DC is trying to differentiate itself from Marvel, but Marvel isn't doing 100% funny stuff either. Their movies have drama, tension and sadness in them, because even they know that going entirely to one end of the spectrum isn't going to work. Anybody remember the beginning of Guardians of The Galaxy? Yeah, and that was their funniest movie to date.

That said, if there was ONE movie that I thought could work with this grimdark approach, it was Suicide Squad. This is a group of psycho criminals, under secret government contract killing other criminals. That could work, that COULD be a tragedy, that could go all the way to that direction and be really effective. There'd still have to be SOME lighter moments, but overall I think a dark tone could've produced something new, unique and effective. Now it seems they're backing up, trying to move the movie closer to the "center", an effort which I'm afraid will produce something average at best, and disjointed at worst.

I think you're confusing grimdark with serious. Or is it the other way round? I think you know what I mean.

The grimdark and serious nature of so many movies lately is the reason I liked Zootopia so much, so this looks like an improvement to me. Then again, I may not end up seeing it anyways.

I don't believe a last minute tonal shift is going to do anything but muddle the movie
I agree with that.

They are probably just trying to catch onto Deadpools coattails. I didn't have high expectations of SS in the first place and I'm not planning on seeing it so I don't really care

I thought they were trying to catch GOTG's coattails?
Perhaps initially it was suppose to be that but it sounds like they made it serious even though GOTG is not. If they are suddenly doing reshoots to comedy it up now it's probably a reaction to Deadpool.

???

I never noticed this "Grimdarkness" of many movies lately beyond DC movies?

Is Deadpool Grimdark?

You know how much is everyone willing to bet that most of the jokes and humor is going to come from the 2 literal clowns them being Joker and Harley Quinn?
I personally don't understand casting Will Smith in a stone cold serious role. One of the most charming dudes in Hollywood and you want to repeat After Earth?
I also realize something else.

What if WB are doing this so they can sell the original footage of the movie as another R Rated Extended Director's Cut like Batman v Superman?

I'm like is Warner Bros. trying to carve a niche in Home Media sales or something?

I actually thought they were going for the R rating for theatrical, otherwise it would seem like a pretty toothless villain based movie.

If that's not what they did originally and ended up taking the movie way too seriously and presented it more as a straight laced affair, then they did the movie wrong and it kind of behooves them, having realized their mistake, to go back and try to get it right before it's too late.
As someone that wasn't expecting it to be a funny movie, because a) it's DC, and b) the production design that I've seen so far looks like BvS, my concern would be that you end up with essentially two movies. Half the time it is super gritty and serious, with its perpetual darkness, serious characters and desaturated color palette and costumes (though weirdly sexualized females). And the other half will be slapstick and quips (and still weirdly sexualized women). If this was something occurring before filming, or even early in the shooting schedule I wouldn't be too concerned, but after principal filming has wrapped? I just can't see it working.

This. The DCEU movies aren't grimdark. They're just more serious than your average saturday morning cartoon.

Make it match the tone of the trailer and it will be fine.

Either way, WB/DC aren't exactly having the best of times making these things. Fox and Marvel are doing their own things, I don't know what the hell these guys are doing.

Grimdark: a subgenre or a way to describe the tone, style or setting of speculative fiction (especially fantasy) that is, depending on the definition used, markedly dystopian or amoral, or particularly violent or realistic.

I honestly don't understand how anyone cannot apply this definition to Batman v Superman. And no, I don't buy that they are just "serious", they are making a huge display of just how "serious" and "adult" and "not a comic book" it is that it really comes off looking like a kid emulating what it believes being an adult is.

Comic Books themselves have been emulating this Grimdark tone in recent years I mean look at these images from Marvel Comic Books:

Oh I know, that stuff started back in the 90s. And I want to be clear, I have not problem with grimdark. It can be a great tone to use for some stories, without a doubt. However, when it is the only tone DC was willing to use in their movies (obviously they seem to be learning better) it becomes painful, and especially when being used for Superman. Even the Death of Superman arc didn't do this, and that's about as dark as Supes gets in the Earth 1 DCU.

For a time I wondered how they would shoe-horn in a dozen origin stories in to one movie, then it hit me; They will just do what Guardians did to introduce everyone.

Honestly, my hopes for this movie are/were about as low as they were for Batman vs Superman. I am not anticipating good things. But since Snyder isn't directing, at least we will be able to make out colours in this movie. So there's that to look forward to.
