For 1v1s only when my friends are being smug about their ludicrous MLG Smash Bro skills aka no fun allowed mode.

Then all items on/pokeballs only for 3 to 4 players. Clutches... clutches everywhere.

Also Dragoon, screw the Smash Ball EVERYONE will kill for the Dragoon.

I always liked items on.
It's what makes Smash Bros. Smash bros.

It's a damn fun game when you play it like your supposed to.
All the competitive people who are always choosing the flat stages with no items really take the fun out of the game.

I like having items on because they can be game changers against players who are more experienced.

The item I don't like is the Smash Ball, as many players tend to only pick certain characters (Snake, Olimar, Link, etc.) because of their Smash Moves and tend to run/hide/wait until the Smash Ball arrives.

Sure, I could just turn off the Smash Ball, but then people become more critical of what other items to ban (PokeBalls, Assist Capsules, Bean Swords, etc.). So to be fair, I just turn off all items.

Counter-point: Some people find it more fun when you strip out all the RNG BS and just enjoy the unique combat system

I'm more in line about talking about those who do the No items Final Destination tourneys.
In that case you might as well just be every character with a sword, because you are bound to lose.
Each character has a different advantage for different stages.
When you strip it down to a simple flat plain, you strip it to the most barest of bones.
Pikachu, who would've excelled in a more platform based stage will get it's ass handed to 9/10 on a flat stage like FD.

Agreed, Final Destination being the go-to stage when Fox has a straight laser always bugged me. I've always been a fan of Battlefield-style maps over it.

I saw the other day that Pokemon Stadium 2 in Project M doesn't transform which I kind of like because Pokemon Stadium was one of my favourite Melee stages and having a version with just the main platforms is nice.

I prefer to have items turned off. Not because they're random or cam get in the way or anything of the sort.

I prefer to have them off because I never get to enjoy them unless I play the game by myself.

I have a nasty habit of just chucking items at people, instead of actually using them. I just throw them around at people.

I've actually gotten quite good at aiming the item so that I can nail someone while they're in the most inconvenient of situations. Like, say, when they've flown off the side of the level and are close to the death zone. :D

The problem is, I don't get to chuck items around with my friends. Because they deliberately go out of their way to keep any and all items out of my hands. Me, specifically, because they see me as a nuisance when I get a hold on one.

It just isn't fun when I don't get to do anything with what we're given. If you're not going to let me use items, why have them on at all? They may think my throwing items is obnoxious, but they're even more obnoxious to keep half the fun away from me and it just really ruins it for me.

So I always turn them off and keep them off because everyone I play with is a total dickwad about not letting me near them.

On of course!
But usually just between 10 and 15 items we choose. Usually so that everyone involved gets a few picks on what they want in the matches.
Only pokeballs and smashpower makes hellchaos thou :p

Items on for a chaotic, entertainment, doesn't matter who wins type round.

If for serious though, items are off. I fucking hate Final Destination too.

Items can be a fun equalizer and i view item/luck management as a legitimate skill in itself (of course as a poker player id be biased in that regard...) so don't see it as casual, if anything i view the classic no items final destination setup as being less "pro" since it means the players cant handle random elements.

So yeh items on, all of them if possible >:)

Mostly off and just rare enough to keep things interesting. I prefer to avoid both monotony and chaos.

Depends on my mood. If I want a challenge 1v1 vs level 9 character with no items. If I want to have a chaotic mess of a fight 1v3 level 1 characters with many items(and 99 stock lives)

I say on, but make it the lowest drop rate. I also always turned off the smash ball and sometimes the dragoon item.

I could go either way. I enjoy the fighting mechanics enough to like playing without items with any number of players, but turning them on is fun as well - gives you more options, and when you're punching and kicking people, followed up by throwing a barrel, it kind of feels like you're in a Jackie Chan movie. Also if I turn items on, I also prefer the bigger/moving stages as well.

Smash Bros is a chaotic fighting game, mostly due to how items can suddenly turn the tide of a match.

I hate the idea of 'no items final destination', because it essentially removes everything that makes Smash Bros different from other fighting games.

Without the items and stages, you're just left with half a game, if you want spr srs fights, play Marvel vs Capcom or Street Fighter, keep your tourney attitude outta mah Smash Bros.
You're doing the game a big disservice to say that it NEEDS items. There's enough of a unique fighting system in the game to warrant the tournament community that's grown from it. Chaining "combos" is varied and requires on the spot improvisation (and generally never inescapable), as opposed to the dial a combo stuff in Tekken or the "a couple ground attacks, launch into air, more attacks, then super" thing you see all the time in MVC3.

I agree. Hyper-competitive, controlled environments tend to quickly suck the fun out of games if you do it too much.

Some people like to whine that "items and stage hazards are unfair" or that if you like playing with items and stage hazards you "need them to win". In response to that, I'd say that a big part of playing Smash Bros. "well" should be in being able to adapt and react to unexpected circumstances.

I say "should" because this is clearly the intent; it's what the game was designed around.

Counter-counter point: An element of random "bs" as you say was specifically implemented to create a fluid situation so that reaction and forethought would be integrated into regular gameplay.

Only pokeballs set to the highest drop rate. Then it's more of a pokemon battle based on luck than a fighting game.

Depends on who I am playing against. If am up against competitive opponents (or friends who want a crack at me) or playing alone, I turn items off and avoid certain stages. If I'm playing against casual players, then there is a good chance that items will appear and silly stages will be fought on.

I play alone most of the time, so I voted for the "items off" option in the poll. I play alone because, no matter whether items are on or off, my friends don't want to play me. ;_;

Well I never play in tournies, so the items stay on for me. Maybe there's a few that I turn off or lower the appearance rate, but I like having the crazy items. Same goes for the levels. I hate having to constantly fight in Final Destination when there are so many fun levels to play around in.
