This wasn't a scientific experiment at all.
There was no control group for one.
This proves nothing.

Now after I finish playing some Unreal Tournament I am going to go murder her.

I havent read through all the previous posts, so apologies if this has already been said, having watched the episode in full, i have to say that the whole 'experiment' was flawed to say the least, had she spent more than 20 minutes doing this, and maybe instead done an actuall case study on the matter then maybe it could have at least been considered feasable, but to me it was simply pointless and to flawed to really give any definitive conclusion on the matter of 'violent' games

People said the same thing about comic books 50 years ago.
and that was after WW2.
which wasn't aggressive at all.
Video games invented violence. Oh, and heavy metal music, when people stopped blaming comic books. And before they started blaming movies. Wait, Supernanny can't blame movies, station she's appearing at might show a war documentary...

OK, so, not picking up pens...makes violent games bad?

Maybe the violent players thought that the pens were hers, and she didn't want them touched? Maybe they thought that they shouldn't touch them? This isn't science, it's retarded nonsense.

After watching this, my sister had a "conversation" about violent videogames with me. She said that they desensitized me to violence. I said that she couldn't say I was both too squeamish and desensitized. She said that there was a difference between punching someone in the head and not being able to watch an operation. I walked off because I couldn't listen to that fucking bullshit anymore, and while I was walking away, I heard her say "He's only arguing so much because he knows I'm right".
I fucking hate my family.

/rant.
Man. That sucks mate. I hate it when I'm talking and noone seems to "hear" what I'm saying
Yep, especially when they seem to want to debate, and yet just completely ignore your side. I don't expect them to listen if I bring it up randomly, but she started it.

Always the same, isn't it? "Oh, it's not the parents' fault their kids are out of control, let's blame the nasty evil video games instead". When I took a Christmas job in my local game shop one year, I would ALWAYS point out to the parents that the games they were buying may not be suitable for their kids by pointing out the age ratings, but they always took no notice. I'm 26, and I've been brought up right by my parents, I always use my manners and I fully know the difference between video games and real life. Once again, it's things like this that make me lose faith in the human race. I could go on for hours about how kids these days have no respect for anybody, but I'll spare you. This post's long enough as it is :D

I don't know if any of you watch the show Supernanny (UK)
But today's episode (which has finished, catch it on 4oD if you're interested in watching it) Supernanny took part in an 'experiment' (I only caught the last few minutes, but got the gist of what they were doing) where she separated 20 boys. One half played a violent War game and the other half played a non-violent football game. After they played for a while, they were taken to a separate room individually to be interviewed. The interviewer purposely knocked some pens over to see how the children reacted. She wanted to see if the children who played the violent games were polite and kind enough to pick up the pens. None of them did, but a couple of the non-violent players did, so they concluded that playing violent war games influences children to be less polite.
I just don't understand.
God if that's what passes for 'science' in these shows I'm glad I don't watch TV anymore.
That is a bullshit experiment. It's not even an experiment. If you're going to make a massive generalization like that; you need a hell of a lot more participants. The extraneous variables here affect the results in such a manner that I don't even think this experiment counts at all, even with more participants.

P.S. Sorry for awful typing.
Agree. The whole experiment is a little wtf. And I agree with you, it's the parents job to make sure their kids are educated and wellmannered. I doubt any game is gonna make one be a bastard. Me and my kid brother have played both non-violent and VERY violent games our whole lives and neither of us are violent in nature. In fact, we both hate violence. And what, us being pacifists is because of games. No, fucking hell no. It's because of our awesome wonderful loving parents.

If that experiment showed anything, it's that their parents are shit. That's my brilliant generalisation. Those twats
I think what this fat cow is missing is that their general... "badness" could have led them to violent games and what led them to being "bad" is their parents mistreating them.

Dude, your poll gives cows a bad rap. Coming from Wisconsin cows are friendly and intelligent animals, unlike "super nanny".

Well that study was obviously bullshit, but there is a small bit of truth behind it (about the size of an atom). Certain children shouldn't get their hands on certain games. I sure as hell wouldn't want a 5 year old kid getting Manhunt or Prototype because they really couldn't handle it. I also wouldn't want children getting games that can be so immersive that they lose sight of everything (yes games are meant to be addictive, but not to the degree to when they dominate your life). All that aside old people should find something else to ***** about.

as has no doubt already been said. Actual studies done by Actual psychologists, sociologists and anthropologists have already performed a barrage of tests on this topic.

As such they are constantly disappointed when they find out that violent games do not equal violent kids.
In fact a study using 5-8 year olds of both genders found children who played more advanced games (as in things you wouldn't realy give to a someone that age) were better skilled in problem solving and basic tasks.

The test is also flawed. Where's the control group? Where is the repeat data? Why only use male subjects who are less likely to be sociable at that age?
In short this was not a properly conducted scientific study, and the researches have published results which they were in fact looking for already (no one wants to here that letting their children play an FPS or RPG is good for them).

My six year old severely autistic brother plays Battlefield 1943 and used to play GTA4 when I was out on my 360. Ironically, it was the times that he was quietest and best behaved. :p

Hi, I'm supernanny, I break into your home, blame everything on you, yell at your kids and leave you a mess - And I get paid for it!

No conclusive evidence has lead to video games creating violence that aren't already based on underlying mental health issues.

Screw you, Supernanny, that test is worth balls

Practically all of my games have violence of some sort, and I am one of the least violent people I know.
Would I have picked up the pens, doubtful. I probably would have used my (terrible, but improving) Red Fox impression and called him a "big dummy." Then maybe helped if some of the pens landed close enough to me.

Since most of the sports game players didn't pick up the pens either, it is easy to see the experiment is nonsense.

That is obviously biased. Violent video games aren't what corrupted me, the Internet and fucked-up porn did that. Now I'm fucking insane!!!hehehehehe! JK
