Tattoos.. there everywhere at the moment. This post is nothing more than my personal opinion and really i just want to see what other people think and feel about tattoos.

First of all let me see that on a personal level i dont like tattoos, however i can appreciate that some tattoos can look good and having a few tattoos on your body can look ok. Maybe something like this:

I can see that something like this is is nice. But personally i just dont GET tattoos, some people have tattoos to symbolise something about them or to depict something they have an interest in. Thats fair enough i can get why some people would want tattoos for something like that. However now i see people with huge tattoos all down their arms and on their backs and chests. Looking at these tattoos i just cant see what it could possibly depict, its just a load of scribblings on their arm and in my opinion just looks terrible. For example:

Its quite obvious that tattoos are the IN thing, a lot of sports people have them, i watch some American Football over here in the UK and i can see a lot of players have tattoos down their arms, and there are a lot of Football players over here who have sleeve tattoos. So obviously a lot of people are getting tattoos because its the new fashion.

But really some people just look a complete state with these tattoos all over them. I was at the Gym earlier and there was this guy with sleeve tattoos all the way down both arms, and he just looked a total mess and i just thought HOW can anyone think that is attractive? or look at himself and say yer looking good. Because he really didnt.

Clearly having a tattoo is just personal taste and people clearly think they look good as they are very popular, and you know thats fair enough who am i to judge anyone. (although i did above :p but really he looked awful). But i cant help thinking what happens 10 years down the line when people get older and these tattoos start to get wrinkled and look silly. Or perhaps your stuck with a tattoo that went wrong, for example:

Im just wondering how other people feel about tattoos. Obviously i dont like them and dont see much of a point. I get why some people have them, but seeing people with tattoos all over them is just over the top and they look stupid. This is just my opinion so dont flame at me just because i dont like them if you do. Having a tattoo requires having a different view on them to me.

I won't get a tattoo for one reason. What I like now, I may not like in 10-20 years. People's interests change, Tattoos do not.

Yes, i also fail to see the point. It's not even that cool when you think about it. At least the standard flaming skulls and the like.

But if i was forced by something to have one, i'd make it a big picture of a nuclear explosion on my back with a capition "In Overkill We Trust".

EDIT: Also look, i've got 4004 posts! Yay me.

I've never, ever liked tattoos. I've always found them extremely off-putting. Same with piercings. They're just distracting, and not many people look good with them.

Now, this is all my opinion.

I suppose if I were to ever get a tattoo, I would get my avatar. The keywork symbolizes so much for me that it is really the only thing I would ever think about putting on my body.

OH GOD. That last one is priceless.

I like 'em. But not all over.

I plan on getting this as a tattoo one day...

It's apparently "asserting your individuality" or whatever.

Really, it just makes you look like a bit of a douche.

However, they're kinda cute on girls.

I have a tattoo. It's my mom's family crest and last name on my right calf. Both my sister and mother got the same one when we were all living together after the divorce. It was something for us all to share and it symbolized that time where all we had was one another. To me that means something.

On the other hand, I don't get piercings. You put a piece of metal through your skin, but it's not really like it symbolizes anything except you enjoy having someone cutting into you for some particular reason.

Yer i get when people having something that has deep meaning towards them. However when i see people with Japanese or Chinese characters on their arm or shoulder, I very much doubt many speak these lanugages and they say it means Freedom or something, does that really have deep meaning? i doubt it, and it could say something like Idiot, or Dog for all they know.

Personally I would never get a tattoo, and while some do look nice the full body ones make you look like a redneck (No offense to those that are) I think people forget that Tattoo's are in fact permanent and like you said, they get wrinkled and look silly. My uncle had a tattoo removed via laser removal and he said, "I'd rather get a full body tattoo then get one removed that's how much it hurt." So if you get a tattoo make sure it'll still look good on your saggy bum later on in life.

I have a tattoo of a hammerhead shark taking a bite out of a dive flag on my right arm. I got that design because it symbolizes one of my great loves: shark diving and diving in general. I also plan on getting a tat of the FOX symbol (see my avatar) to represent my love for gaming and a catholic cross on my back to represent my religious faith. I believe that when you get a tattoo it has to represent something about yourself, otherwise it just looks stupid, like the jackass with the "I'm Awesome" design on his back in the image above. Basically, if it doesn't represent something about yourself or something that you like, then you shouldn't get a tattoo.

A well-crafted, meaningful tattoo is beautiful. Too bad most tattoos don't fit this description. I'll never get a tattoo; I have yet to come across something I love enough to have it permanently inked on my body.

Obligatory:

Tattoos actually meant something way back when; either a tribe symbol or ownership symbol - but I don't understand why people get them now - most of them are godawful to look at. I've seen people with transformers tattoos and metallica tats. Awful.

But like you said, some aren't that bad - like the butterflies or flowers.

I don't see the point in them. It's very silly to get your whole arm different colours with no meaning.

However, I do agree, OP, tattoos like the first picture can be nice sometimes.

LOL thats golden, i will happily admit that some tattoos look good. But WHAT, WHAT was this guy thinking, and does anybody thing this is good? And i dont mean in a funny way because i think its hilarious.

If this man actually wanted it because he thought it was funny, fair play for that because im sure it wouldnt be that funny after too long.

They can be used for self-expression, religious symbolism and other things. Some people just get really stupid things, which I can't understand. I may get something tattooed on me, but it'll have to be someone very important to me.

I used to want tattoos when i was younger but now im old enough to get some im not in any desperate rush to go out and get inked. I think the main thing is, as Daystar Clarion said, interests change but tattoos dont. If i got some done now i would find a good artist and i would take time over the design and the end result would be a good quality tattoo. But it would just be skulls and sea monsters and stupid shit like that which i would probably think was cool for about 5-6 yrs and then start to regret.

I have stretched ears, but theyre not stretched very large,if i wanted i could take them out and have them heal up completely normally again. This is likely to happen after university when i enter the working world. But tattoos are just so....permanent.

I dont dislike them though, they can look badass, but i agree with op there are so many people out there with bad tattoos, mainly people who have gone with a cheap artist and/or have a complete lack of artistic flair when it comes to choosing a design,ie picking a shit design off the wall/getting a tribal tattoo(i seriously hate tribal tattoos, always worn by douche bags, without exception.)

i personally love them on people but i don't have any at the moment.

but i know it is not everybody's cup of tea and i know my dad would disown me if he ever found out that i was going to get one.

sure with are they will not look the same as before but it was nice while it lasted and not everything lasts forever.

If you liked something enough to get it tattooed then regardless of how many years later it is it should still hold some sentimental value or at least some memory's or a reminder of passed feelings. For example I could get a tattoo of my favourite band now, and 20 years later even though I might not like that band now, I will know that I used to and it serves as a reminder of that.

Personally I think its more about getting intelligent tattoo's than tattoos themselves. More than likely if you get a tattoo of something like 'I'm Awesome' you are gonna regret it, but a tattoo of a dead relative of something like that might hold vast amounts of importance.

As for my tattoo's I got a small one last year at the back of my neck to see what it was like(I don't mean I got a tattoo because I wanted to see what it was like, I got it because I knew something small and discreetly placed would be the best tattoo to get first, so you can gauge the entire process). So I got the letters CFH which stands for Cowboys From Hell, which is basically a Pantera tattoo, but it also represents a mindset and it is also in memory of Dimebag, so regardless of How I feel about the band 20 years from know, I will always know what it means to me and how Pantera's music helped me, and hopefully it will continue to. I have mymost of my arms planned as well as a piece of each of my legs and some other bits and bobs around my body, and they almost all hold something special to me.

That being said I always have them planned for months before hand, most of the ones I have planned, I have been planning for over 2 years. If I was gonna have second thoughts on them or regret them I would have done that years ago in the planning stage. Now all I need is money and a good artist.
