While tattoos may or may not be as popular as you're saying, I can tell you that earrings (and other piercings for that matter) are so much more popular and therefore so much more meaningless than tattoos. It used to be cool walking around with a piercing, and now every second dumbass and/or really ugly looking person has one and thinks they're cool.
You could be right, There are a lot of tattoos around but perhaps its not that popular, however I just seem to notice them everywhere. Perhaps this is want people want but im not looking because they look good, because they look bad.

On Piercings, im not to hot on those either, but all i usually see are people with the ear stretchings.

The fallacy a lot of people here are making here is that they think they have to mean something. I want tattoos because I think they look good, if you get the right thing in the right place, it'll look great until you're too old to give a shit about looks anyway.

Same with piercings, I've spent £100+ on my left eyebrow, and I don't regret it. I loved the way it looked;

Yes, I was drunk in this photo, how could you tell?!
I've since retired 2 of those and now I just have the one eyebrow bar, but believe me, I'll get more in the future.

And yes, I'll be covered in tattoos too. I'm going to look wrinkly and grey when I'm old regardless, so I'll make myself as perfect as I can be now.

Tattoos are to some people, an expression on who they are, or something they have interest in.
Other people get them to be cool, or to be more attractive. (to certain people)
Personally, I could see myself getting a couple tattoos, possibly in the near future.
I'd get them, mostly just to try something different.
I'd like to get Sleeve tattoos, because quite frankly, I think they look pretty darn cool.
I will not, however, get my face tattoo'd(tattoo'd, is that right?), I think that looks ridiculous on people.

I wouldn't have them my self but if I wanted to I might have had these, just really small and hidden.

As for tattoos, I don't mind them. Infact some of them can be very pretty b, but the large ones which look like my doodles from my school books just look silly. Symbolic for smoething, sure, but still stupid.

If I ever got one it would be one of my own drawings. Like one I did of Gully here.

I like them a lot but I heal so badly that I don't even dare an ear piercing - I would be one mess of horrid scars :(

On the issue I tend to go with "live and let live" and not feel like I was in any place to criticise what people do with their body. I once went as a chaperone with an ex who was having a tattoo done on her lower belly/just above pubic zone. The tattoo artists was adamant that he would not do it without a third party - I respected that in the same way I respected the equipment inspection we were invited to do.

The pain doesn't look to be an issue...but then I am in pain every day and you can teach yourself to not really feel it.

On the other hand I knew another lass who not only had her own name tattooed on her arm (which I did not understand) but actually misspelled it (should have ended in -e on her tatt it ends in -a). She insisted that she was drunk at the time which suggests to me that the artists involved was something of a hack.

Given I am way too much of a coward to let something needly near my skin, and given that I don't drink, I most likely won't get one - as for everybody else, its just like jewelery - if it's done well, it can look amazing, but everything goes down the drain as soon as rappers / wannabe gangsterz and douchebags get involved.

Tattoos can be pretty, but overall I think it's sort of a "girly" thing to get.

Manly men should go and get themselves a branding or perhaps a scarification. Having a little needle going through your skin inserting tiny droplets of paint is nothing compared having your flesh cut or burned into the pattern or imagery you want.

But i cant help thinking what happens 10 years down the line when people get older and these tattoos start to get wrinkled and look silly.
Which is why if/when I cowgirl up and get myself inked I'm putting plenty of thought into where it should go.

There are plenty of people with silly, tacky-looking tattoos, but there are plenty with really gorgeous tattoos, too. I judge on a case-by-case basis.

ETA: Also, I want to share one of my favourite tattoos ever -- PhD research tattoo [http://blogs.discovermagazine.com/loom/2008/05/27/origin-of-an-epidemic/]

People who get tattoos just to look cool annoy me. I have one, and likely will get more in the future, but I won't get sleeves, and I won't get anything that doesn't mean anything to me. Currently I have a Celtic Knot on my right shoulder blade, as a memorial for my grandmother.

I have a Tattoo of computer ports on the side of my leg. I've been a computer geek ever since I was young, I've worked in the field for the past 4 years, I'm going to school to get a degree in Information Assurance. I intend upon working with computers most of my life.

I'm thinking about getting some other tattoos, because they can get pretty addictive. But I debate on the tattoos and really think about them hard for at least a year before hand.

My next tattoo, I intend to get it done in India Ink first, so I can get a feeling for how people will react to the tattoo, and see if I will actually like it.

They got made cool by rock stars and now everyone has them. Many look ugly but some can look nice. I' judge them on an individual basis as some look amazing and others just make you look like a twat.

I would probably have one but I'm a haemophiliac and therefore it's highly idiotic of me to get tattoos or piercings. But I'd have though long and hard about what I'd get done.

I have a tattoo, and I don't regret getting it. I may in the distant future, but I don't think I will. Plus it's in a discrete place.

I do want to get another one, however I'm not sure where on my body yet.

It's apparently "asserting your individuality" or whatever.

Really, it just makes you look like a bit of a douche.

However, they're kinda cute on girls.
Yeah, their individuality really rings true when you see a dozen other girls with a star on their hip or wrist.

Tattoos are bulls*it, most people who have them generally have little to no personality, and have to use a permanantly embedded picture on their skin as a talking point.

I find it ridiculous that a few score years ago, people who were in wars got a tattoo as a symbol of their labour and efforts, and their kinship with those who have undergone such extreme and deadly conditions. Now people get them because they look "cool". Wait 'til your older, then it'll look like a Parkinson's sufferer used a spirograph on you.

Ultimately, the human body is a piece of art, regardless of physical appearance. Getting a tattoo's like Da Vinci scrawling his signature with a Sharpie on the Mona Lisa; criminal.

I like tattoos, however I think they've lost a lot of their meaning over the years. I know a few people who got their names tattooed on their backs, supposedly just in case they loose their driver's license and have ID when they get pulled over. The BIGGEST, most obnoxious, instant-hate tattoo is those tribal tattoos.

If I ever got a tattoo, which I would like to, I couldn't do random butterflies, stars, tribal bullshit, or something. I'd try to make it as meaningful to me as possible. I've known people who got tattoos to remember a family member who was close to them that died in Iraq, to me, that's a good tattoo.

One thing of interest to me is a UV tattoo, "invisible ink" tattoo. It only shows up under blacklight, so technically, it does defeat the purpose of a a tattoo, but I just think it's too interesting to pass up. Plus, if you don't like it down the road, you can't even see it! : D

Darn you and our similar opinion.

I think tattoos on a girl is really sexy, and frankly, the more tattoos (to a point I suppose) the better... I saw a girl the other day who had almost her whole side tattooed, from her neck down to her ankle, and, well, yum.. But I think that's from a sick part of my mind that likes girls that are.. well, broken.

I myself briefly toyed with the notion of getting a tattoo, but I'm glad that I gave it time because if I had got what I was thinking about getting, I would totally regret it. related to a game that I don't play anymore or have any real interest in, but not even something someone else would find charming. It's a really obscure symbol from a game that has niche appeal, and on the whole FURRY niche appeal (I wasn't interested in it in the Furry sense, but whatever, I digress). Good call on not getting it.

Funny Tattoo related story, my dad has a tattoo on his arm of an Eagle head, and instead of showing it to people, he shows them a picture from inside his wallet of his own arm.

Sorry. I'll try and contradict what I feel about a subject next time, that way your feelings will be spared. ^_^
