One of my favourite quotes is:

"The only difference between tattooed people and non-tattooed people is tattooed people don't care if you are not tattooed."

The amount of bigotry some people get just from getting themselves inked is quite amazing sometimes. I just don't get what the objection is.

I currently don't have a tattoo - but I want to get a crescent-shaped tattoo of a lone wolf howling at the moon on my upper arm (it's a grey-scale from a photograph I think). I really like wolves, I'm quite a solitary type and I love the night, so it holds a lot of significance about my youth. So I'll still love it when I'm older. The only reason I haven't done it yet is the cost - as it's grey-scaled it will cost me a pretty penny compared to a black tattoo - so it's my treat/incentive for passing this year of university.

My girlfriend has an anarchy symbol on her left wrist. She got it done when she was 16 iirc, but it was a little wonky. She got it straightened up a few weeks ago, and it looks ace.

Oh, trust me, I don't think getting a disease is the biggest issue for me, I just don't want to get what is sometimes so aptly named a "tramp stamp". You are indeed correct in the sense that most shops in Western countries are safe, but not all countries are just as safe. I was recently on vacation in Thailand and saw quite a few foreigners go through the door of tattoo parlors (I love Thailand, but I'm not sure they're up to par on this particular point yet). Anyhow, I was mostly reacting to another post which cited only AIDS as a possible consequence, but a lot of people forget that there's also hepatitis C which is perhaps just as bad (cirrhosis and potentially liver cancer too).
Yeah, I just wanted to point out that, even if I'm not a fan of Tattoos, you don't need to worry about getting diseases from a tattoo if you're going into a professional shop. If its a concern that would prevent someone from getting a tattoo, its easy to just observe the tattoo place, and see with your own eyes that you don't have to worry. There's a lot of reasons to not like Tattoos, but these days, there at least safe and clean. Of course, I suppose it is true that I'm assuming it's a shop in a place like America or Britain or similar places that would have strict health regulations. Getting a tattoo in Thailand might carry risks not present elsewhere. Of course, I suspect that most of us live in a place with safety regulations, and probably wouldn't decide to get a Tattoo while we happen to be in Thailand, but it's a good thing to remember.

depends on their location and amount.

my wife has 3 tattoos ... one at the base of her neck and one on each her shoulder blades. i find it quite sexy when she wears a tank top.

i have one on each shoulder.

in both our cases none of them are huge and/or over done. it's all about personal preference.

As you get older you begin to realize it's just skin. The whole concept of permanence and finality scares the ever loving shit out of timeless and immortal teenagers. I didn't get my first one til 24. Will get more when I'm inspired.
