The more I play Terraria the more it becomes painfully apparent how different they are, the more I play the less they remind me of each other. I think the comparison with Minecraft does Terraria quite a disservice.

Terraria is. A sandbox, side-scrolling, action, adventure game. It has a lot of content, a LOT of it. The amount of items you can find and make;weapons, armors, accessory that grant certain abilities when equipped, materials, environments, enemies, big boss monsters, you can made a town and attract NPC's that you can trade with, there's even some random events. Each environment comes with it's own set of enemies, goodies and materials to find. When you think you've found everything you stumble upon something new.

A few criticisms.
The enemies are pretty much re-skins of each other. It goes so far that two of the bosses suffer from it. I would say there are 3-4 enemy types and everything is just a variation on those enemy types.

A few bugs about; one of the random events goes on for much longer than it should, I've heard hours.

One of the bosses managed to kill itself for me, I think this is one of the bugs. It seemed like it was taking damage from something it shouldn't have been, I have no idea what though as it happened off screen.

Angel Statue; no really you can't do anything with it, it's not a mind game, it's actually not worth the space it take up in your inventory. (I'm just bitter)

If you are someone who can't rest until they have and seen everything the game has to offer, just don't, walk away and don't look back. Random generation can be a *****.

Minecraft. Aside from Terraria being a rip-off, their so much less that's possible. Taking a dimension away makes building a lot less interesting. Plus, Minecraft has a certain charm with its art and music and everything.
Terraria is a different game, it's not even so much about the building and crafting. it's more about exploring, surviving, and fighting bosses. If you actually play it than you will see that's its a completely different game. In fact its more like Mario than it is minecraft. Fortresscraft is a ripoff, not Terraria.

haven't played Terraria, but I'll admit Single Player on Minecraft is boring. I almost always play on servers, mainly anarchy servers. how much the server follows Human history is beyond frightening.

Terraria, because I have yet to battle a colossal worm monster as it lunges at me from the corrupted earth in Minecraft. Then I took the worm's teeth from it's corpse to craft myself some superior arrows. Minecraft is just a time sink. You can basically cut down a single tree and be set by producing a work bench and a full set of tools from it. Terraria? Less so. See for example when a Blood Moon rises and the random zombies double in spawn rate and gain the ability to open doors...

Haven't played terraria and I do own minecraft. Judging by what I have seen of both I feel comfortable in picking minecraft as my preferred game. Terraria looks interesting for all the weapons and such but damn I like the 3d of minecraft for the building, makes it much more intersting I would think.

I'm going to have to go with Terraria. Terraria is what I thought Minecraft would be; an epic adventure involving building structures and gathering resources. In reality Minecraft is just a game about building structures and gathering resources to build more structures.

Shouldn't the real question be FortressCraft [http://www.fortresscraft.com/] vs Minecraft?

I think I'd prefer minecraft (have not played terraria).

I play minecraft for the ability to build myself some totally awesome stuff. Whereas terraria seems like Mining meets castlevania.

I prefer building stuff to combat. So minecraft it is. I like to physically explore my creations.

They're both trying to be different things. I don't get why people are seeing the two as competition.

That said, it'd be nice if Minecraft had the depth (both literal and figurate in terms of a wider variety of things to do,) that Terraria does. I'm seriously disappointed that Notch has released next to nothing since November. According to the website, Terraria has been in development for 3 months less than Minecraft, with about the same sized team.

And that also said, I'd really like to play Terraria, but it doesn't look like they're interested in developing for Mac. Sadface.

I liked them both, but Minecraft got pretty boring once I finished making my house or whatever project I was working on. Terraria is more combat based and makes you feel like you're in danger with its super sized bosses and whatnot. The only thing terraria is missing is a 3rd dimension. Thats really the only turnoff of the game that I have. I'll probably go back to Minecraft once I get bored with terraria.

Since Minecraft and Terraria is incredibly different theres no reason to start a "omg terraria ripped off minecraft" war.
Anyways, I prefer Terraria because of the fighting system, the bosses, and the exploration part.

I can't say either. They are totally different games. Minecraft is a bit more focused on building, I think, with less monsters, and I think Terraria is more multiplayer focused. I do own both of them, and love both. I just play what I'm in the mood for.

Quick question, Which one?
Real question, Why?

Minecraft has been around for a bit longer and I'd bet a pretty penny that it formed part of the inspiration for Terraria and has left me wondering what the general feeling toward the two are now.

Both of them have differences in game-play and aesthetics and both appear to be off the shelf (interwebs) hits. Are these games ushering in a new genera of games? Are we going to see more clones, parodies, rip-offs and re-imaginings? Maybe even the next big MMO "World of CraftCraft" from BloodyBigBudgetGames&Co? Or is the just a flash in the pan, tiding us over till the next innovation that people will look back on and give a hefty ?meh? to, much like Tower Defense games.

Thoughts, ideas, opinions, randomly hurled insults?
VS threads are frowned upon, that said, i dont think either one is "better", they have very different styles, ways of working, the fight is completely different and the only thing that seems to be the same is that they are both pixelated and you dig with a pickax

other that that, its like asking what is better, the "Gran Turismo" franchise or the "Need for Speed" Franchise? they are both "racing Sims" but they are completely different when compared one next to the other.

and regarding your final statement, there are only few ways one can implement mechanics like minecraft (resource gathering, building, fighting mobs etc etc etc) and i think with Terraria and Minecraft they are all well portrayed, the difference between TD games is that you could mix it up quite easily and it was a flash game, this other games actually require effort to do them, so i don´t see many people doing clones, and if there are, even "Notch" is already changing and expanding the game, the "clone" would have to compete with over a year of development.

those are my thoughts.

Fortresscraft is just Minecraft Classic, except it costs money and is worse in every possible way.

OT: Terreria is more focused on adventure, and minecraft is more focused on building. So.... Both?

Feels like Terraria is a game for all the hipsters who think that Minecraft is too mainstream... (if you don't agree, please do NOT reply, I don't care!)

Not even Minecraft could keep my attention for too long and a 2D version would have to add more than all the combat and RPG elements in the world to be worth playing.

Terraria, and I'll explain why:
More ores and equipment,
Special loot,
Magic weapons,
NPCs,
Meteorites,
Underground jungle,
Giant underground glowing mushroom gardens,
Islands in the sky,
More enemies,
Boss battles,
Corrupt areas with better loot and harder enemies,
Random giant buildings with boss monsters and loot.

It's like Minecraft, but with more stuff to do!!
And don't say 'TROLLOLOL, MINECRAFT RIP-OFF!! M1N3CR4FT FOREVS' because Notch is supporting the creators of Terraria.

I find Terraria more of a finished version of Minecraft, but on a two-dimensional plane. It has many of the features that Minecraft will have, but in much later updates.

Still, Minecraft has it's charm. It causes you to explore and build, with little to no goals.

Terraria has many things to do, but it's not as much of a playground.

But the biggest bomb would be that the Terraria team won't have mod support, while Mojang will, and is implementing that.

Conclusion?
Terraria is something enjoyable. Minecraft is something enjoyable.

Will I be playing Terraria in two weeks? Probably not.
Will I be playing Minecraft in two weeks? Sure of it.

Building isn't everything you know. Don't try to judge Terraria in the criteria of minecraft. Sure terraria is a shitty building game, but a great adventure RPG game. Besides, terraria was in development before minecraft, therefore neither of them are a rip-off of the other
