It depends on what the OP means by "better".

If it's meant as "which movie has a stronger message?" then it's almost guaranteed to go to DKR. Avengers' "message" is "Friendship and Teamwork are important" The Dark Knight's message was "how far into villain territory is it OK to go to catch an even worse villain?" And didn't force a viewpoint on its audience, other than "hey, maybe you should think about this question after you're done with the movie. What would YOU do in this situation?"

If we're going by "How much fun did I have watching it?" Then I simply must hand it to Avengers. It's the ultimate popcorn flick. Simple, easy-to-follow story, engaging characters, great dialogue, awesome fight scenes (even if some of them are shoehorned in, "hero-vs-hero" affairs) and it's transparently obvious that everyone involved with the production is having an absolute BLAST. TDKR simply CANNOT top that from what I've seen so far.

I didn't vote, btw. I can't choose.

The Avengers was freaking awesome.

I'm not sure about The Dark Knight Rises as I have yet to see it. That of course will change when it comes out.

Dark Knight Rises will have to be better than the Dark Knight, to even come close to beating how awesome I thought the Avengers was.
Pretty much this. The Dark Knight was really good, it's going to be hard to top it.

I really liked both Batman movies when they first came out, but I think they've kind of been spoiled for me. Since watching them I've also watched The Animated Series and played Arkham Asylum / Arkham City, and I liked the Batman from those the most, making that one the definitive one in my mind. I've also watched The Avengers and most of the other Marvel movies leading up to it, which captured the comic book style far better in my opinion (which may very well be misguided, since I've never read a superhero comic book in my life).

So basically, both the character and the style of The Dark Knight Rises have already been overshadowed by other media in my mind. I'll probably watch the film and enjoy it, but I doubt it will be very memorable to me compared to The Avengers. In fact I'm finding it hard to muster up any enthusiasm for it at all.

As for which will be more popular and make the most money, didn't The Avengers do insanely well and break a bunch of records? No matter how good The Dark Knight Rises turns out to be, I don't think the odds are in its favour.

It's a fun and great action blockbuster, but it simply isn't trying to be more than that. It wasn't a particularly smart film, it didn't make an attempt to tackle any deeper or mature issues. It was a relatively family friendly super hero movie.
I completely agree with your analysis of the Avengers, but unlike you this is why I enjoyed it more then any of Nolan's Batman films. Personally, I think companies are trying too hard when it comes to their art products (TV, films, games etc) and forget that not only can something that aims to simply be "Entertaining" be a massive hit with both critics and audiences (see also, Raiders of the Lost Arc) its also very very hard to do (Transformers).
Yeah, I can absolutely see why that works. Actually, part of the reason why I liked the Avengers was because of just that. It was just trying to be a fun movie. Wasn't out for awards (even though Downey was excellent in it), it was just a bunch of people coming together to make a fun movie.

Wouldn't it make more sense to create this thread after people had actually seen the Dark Knight Rises, versus making it now, based on pure speculation?

Anyways. . . I don't know. Everything Nolan has made in the past was good, but I have some concerns about the upcoming Batman movie. Rumor mill says there is a high chance of Nolan killing off Bruce Wayne because

1. It's the final entry in Nolans trilogy

2. No one else will be able to pick up the reigns and ruin Nolans trilogy if Nolan ends it himself.

3. The storyline from the last two movies does hint that Waynes death is at least a possibility.

4. Trailers keep showing Gordon-Levitt, but no one can figure out who he is suppossed to be or why he is important. ( other than the assumption that he takes over as Batman after Waynes death)

Comics fan that I am, I would consider killing Wayne and replacing him a cardinal sin. That said, theoretically Nolan could kill Wayne in such a mind blowing awesome way that I overlook the sin anyway.

Avengers was great, especially when you factor in the effort it took to make it all work after a half dozen movies with conflicting styles being meshed into one movie.

After I see Nolan's final Batman I will be able to give a much more informed opinion. Until then, I hope Nolan doesn't kill Wayne, and that the movie is at least as good as Batman Begins. ( let's face it, it will never be as good as The Dark Knight, because of the Joker)

The Avengers was a fun film, but The Dark Knight Rises will be a good film. Your answer will hinge on which you consider more important. Personally, I don't really like superheroes in general, so the the former film's gaping plot holes and shallow storytelling made it a see-and-forget affair.

I agree that The Hobbit will probably be better than both - it's got a lot going for it, with an amazing cast, a proven director, an excellent soundtrack, and amazingly fun source material. I also have high hopes for Skyfall (why does everyone seem to forget that it's happening?), but only time will tell there.

Two different super hero movies for two different audiences (though no doubt they'll share MANY MANY fans and $$)

Dark Knight Rises= Serious, Dramatic/Dark, Story Based.

The Avengers= Fun for all, Action Based, Fast-Paced.

I'm still not sure which will reel in the most cash though. The Dark Knight grossed over a billion dollars. Avengers will no doubt pass that but it took 5 movies and a huge 3D beginning of summer blockbuster deal.

I will probably enjoy Dark Knight Rises more but simply because I like the more dramatic tone in those type of movies more. But make no mistake, Avengers is still at least in my top 5 movies of all time.

My god man! It worked! The machine worked! We've travelled back in time!

Excellent..... Now, we can spread the news...... The Dark Night Rises is so good it opened a rip in the space time continuum! We have travelled back, to warn you about it's dangers!

Do not see the Dark Night Rises, for all of our sakes!

OT: Oh wait no, I have no idea because it isn't out yet.

Both are very different. This doesn't mean that you can't compare them, just that it's like comparing apples and oranges. Your crunchy/sweet to citrusy conversion scale is going to be a bit muddled.

Comparing Avengers to The Dark Knight, it's a close race. Avengers is more fun, Dark Knight is just wonderfully done. I'm tempted to call it for Avengers, but honestly, I feel the conversion is muddy enough that I can't name a clear victor. Now, TDKR will inevitably be great. Well, pretty close to inevitably. Nolan does a great job, and both the batman movies have been great. But i don't think they will match Ledgers Joker. I think TDKR will be the best movie to ever be a letdown in comparison to the previous installments, and I really can't imagine it being better. If Avengers has a slight edge or tie with The Dark Knight, then Avengers will almost certainly beat TDKR. I could be wrong, but no matter how much I try to reserve judgement, I still can't help but put my money on this.

Depends on what basis, really. I think DKR will be a better movie, but that's based on the genre and style of movies I prefer.

The Avengers made a f***ton of cash in theatres. Will Batman fans be just as zealous with DKR? Or will they be sick of going to the theatre by the time it is released?

Even though they're both 'superhero' movies you can't really compare them. Avengers is much more lighthearted and action-y? than the Batman movies. Objectively I think TDKR will be better but I'll enjoy it less than Avengers simply because I didn't expect the Avengers to be very good and I was plesantly surprised.

Well, I won't know for sure until the movie actually comes out, but I'm pretty confident I'm going to love TDKR. I also love the Avengers.

For entirely different reasons. I honestly don't see the point in pitting one against the other. They're both solid franchises with talented actors, and wonderful writer/directors.
