Wait- Have you any of you even PLAYED the first gen recently? it's a mess. It did not age well at all.

And why are you people saying that only 151 pokemon is a good thing? I mean really, do you just hate having variety?

4th generation, is the best, definitely. I mean, the 2nd gen was good and all- but it was vastly improved by the better mechanics of DPP.

As for an individual game- Platinum.

2) There are only 150 pokemon!

152 Pokemanz from Generation I.
'M, A, a, [symbol that the forums don't display], .4, h POKe, PokeWTrainer, PkMn, LM4, p T, PC4SH, 4B 8 4 8, PkMnaPkMnfPkMnk, $, G'Mp, Glitchy Nidorino, Charizard 'M, and 18 other glitch pokemon from yellow.

If we are counting glitch Pokemon, you have to count all of them. Not just the popular one. So there are 187 pokemon from generation 1.

Everything after FireRed and LeafGreen aren't worth my time. Too many pokemon with really stupid names that are hard to remember name.

Missingno is really Khangiskhan. Its got a history behind it.

Show wise: Kanto series.
Game wise: Jhoto series.

I loved the first two generations because they organized the game play mechanics that made the series so fun to me. Between the two, I'd say I liked the second generation the best because it really refined the whole feel of the experience (and introduced my favorite pokemon, Umbreon).

I liked the third generation quite a bit too, though not as much as the second (and about on par with the first). I felt the fourth generation has been the weakest, feeling unfocused (not helped much by the huge roster of pokemon available at this point). I don't really know why they felt just iffy to be honest, but they were definetly my least favorite.

Also: I don't think FR+LG/HG+SS added enough to be honestly included in the later generations.

I have played games from the 1st gen, 3rd gen, and 4th gen, and positively loved soulsilver! The reason is that i never got to play the 2nd gen and was thrilled that i got to play the missing key part of the pokemon series. so by far i believe that even though technically its not the same as the original silver, it makes up for that missing hole of mine. so by far it has to be gen 4, because lets face it, Hoenn region sucked.

Hm... It's a toss up between the second and fourth for me.

The second, IMO, had a good number of Pokemon while still keeping the uniqueness of most of them fresh. The fourth though added the new Physical/Special attack system which is much, MUCH better than any generation before it.

In terms of gameplay, 4th-gen is certainly the best. The mechanics have been tweaked to near-perfection at this point, so you have to rely on strategy and not just powering through with one Psychic-type.

That, and since 4th-gen now includes the awesomeness that was Gold and Silver via remakes, there's no longer any contest.

Ha! Best glitch ever!

I really like the first ones, I mean I had all three for some pointless reason! There's probably a bit of nostalgia swaying my decision, but then who cares. I did pick up a copy of Diamond to see where the series had gotten to, and I must say I was pleasantly surprised. I guess making copies of what worked previously is a given for success though.

1st gen, then 2nd gen. Both avoided the "cute" pokemon for the most part and neither had the really awful Pokemon designs. I mean, have you seen Mojumbo? *deep sigh* 1st gen gets my vote as it was where my childhood went. Those were hours well spent XD

Okay, I love the first three, and Yellow is probably my favourite game of them. The Elite 4 was extremely hard, all things considered, and in G/S/C, the Elite 4 was pretty much a joke, and Kanto was pathetic, considering once you could beat the Johto Elite 4, all but Blue would quiver beneath your Pokémon team's mighty fists.

R/B/Y was marred by one huge thing - THE FUCKING INVENTORY. Can't remember what TM06 was? Better boot it up, wait for it to tell you, then hit B if it's the wrong one. You have to keep all your shit in order by your own damn self, and the biggest annoyance was the TM's. Then G/S/C comes along and keeps our shit in separate pockets, organizes our TM's by number, and gives us a bunch more (rather useless) balls and such, making things WAY easier to play through.

I think I enjoyed FireRed/LeafGreen the most (haven't played HeartGold/SoulSilver, because it combined the first 151 Pokémon (though more were available through the Islands and shit), and everything I loved about R/B (not Yellow though, as it lacked an adorable, electrically charged companion), and the streamlined feel of the later games. Ignoring natures and such for maximizing efficiency to a self-castratingly insane level, it made for the most fun I've had with my Pokémon, tied with Yellow.

However, R/B are crushed by FR's mighty testicles, so FR/LG are ahead of R/B/Y in the long run.

1st gen was a new, inventive idea, and is still fun to play to this day.

2nd gen was the best. With all the new innovations like new pokemon, the Battle Tower, Pokemon animations, and all the other great stuff, PLUS the ability to go back to the Kanto region, it was simply great.

3rd gen was really good too, but at that point, it felt a little too gimmicky, and like not enough had been upgraded. Plus, you couldn't go back to either of the old regions. It was still fun though.

4th gen sucked. It screwed up battle by messing with Special and regular Attacks, it screwed up pokemon contests, it screwed up Secret Bases, it just screwed up. Also, the pokewatch is terrible compared to the awesome PokeGear in G/S/C.

My personal ranking of the generations of pokemon from favorite to least favorite:

2nd Gen
4th Gen
3rd Gen
1st Gen

Yes, I'm listing the 1st generation as the weakest of all 4. You see, my draw to the pokemon series has always been the competition itself, so the features that were added in later generations all made the games better. Also, the 2nd generation of pokemon had some of the best story line, with only the 4th generation being able to rival that. Also, the second generation was the only generation that allowed you to go back to a previous town, something no other game has been able to do, sadly.

And honestly, I really can't see why anyone can still say the first game is best unless they never bothered even trying the other games.

I'm loving Soul Silver at the moment, even though I'm not that far into it (just beat the first gym).

Silver and Gold were actually a missed generation for me, I went straight from Red to Ruby. Ruby was okay, but had a lot of strange pokemon that indicated they were running out of ideas.

I'm liking the Silver generation, they are original enough to still be considered good. The Pokewalker was a nice touch too, I tried it out for the first time today and the little mini-games you can do on it are cool. It's a gimmick, but it's a fun gimmick.

I liked the first generation because, well, a chunk of my childhood is based upon it.
The second generation I adored because that's when I fully got into the games.
The third because it had some really interesting Pokemon and the landscape was extremely varied.
Fourth... I didn't really care for. Don't get me wrong, they were good games, they just lacked the spark the other three generations had.

(By generation, I mean the new games brought to the series i.e. not FireRed or HeartGold)
