"Hope is the first step on the road to disappointment." - Imperial maxim.

This thread proves the truth of those words, as I harbored hope that Warhammer 40,000 might have been on a list of the best Sci-Fi universe only to see that hope cruelly dashed away! It is reassuring though that the very first response was someone nominating it for that distinction.

I voted for Trek because I like the idea of a peace keeping, multi-race organization whose prime directive, if you will, is to explore and learn as much about the universe as possible. Not all sci-fi has to be about the ultimate battle between good and evil and a war between us and them.

Then again, if anime counts I'd like to say Cowboy Bebop, because it is frigging awesome.

As much as I adore Firefly and Battlestar, the Star Wars universe (pre-empire) would be my favourite to live in

I'd definitely have to go for the Neuromancer universe. Nasty, gritty, unforgiving and wonderful in every possible respect. Also, cyberspace. Oh to be a console cowboy.

I'm split between Mass Effect and Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex.

Star trek universe is quite possibly the best one in terms of social means and such. I would like to live in that universe and many other people too I would imagine.

From an entertainment point of view...Firefly 'verse!

The universe that the various books about the Culture are set in. It's diverse beyond the wildest dreams of most authors, with ideas that some universes would make their defining plot point appearing as all but incidental notes, like the Shellworld in Matter. (think: matrioshka Dyson Spheres) It's not even really necessary to the plot, it's just a setting for one book then on to the next fantastical thing. Or the empire of Azad, a society where every aspect of social position is defined by how well one plays a particular board game. (possibly the only ludocracy in fiction).
