I would be against it simply out of some warped idea I have. I've always hated growing up in Australia, and take every chance I can get to attack it for its mongrel cross-breed no culture nature.

I don't like the idea of countries with complex historical backgrounds and inherent cultures suddenly becoming one. I don't like it because it is just another step towards globalisation; I don't like it because it is another step towards those cultures being forgotten; I like that you can make jokes about stereotypes of countries; not all countries are entirely friendly to the point where they would give up executive power in their country.

I know that there aren't too many valid points in what I said, it's more of a feeling that is inside of me, and it says No, Puzzles, don't let them take away your countrys independence after all, we don't all agree on how things should be done - as was said, all major wars started in Europe, they must have had conflict.

Ahh, god, I don't really believe what I'm saying that strongly, I mean an international empire would have some massive ability to influence world affairs, and in fact it is almost definately for the best.

But, having grown up in Australia - the land of lost identity, and also been a citizen of the United Kingdom, I've always thought well at least I have one big bad country to belong to, hell one that conquered millions in its time.

And then it becomes just another chunk of a bigger country. BLARG!

In all seriousness I think I actually would like this, I get really bored with the news so anything to mix it up a bit is great, as long as it doesnt destry cultural identities and so on.

I think the EU should slowly transform into one nation. We are in no hurry to scare people by rushing it, however when we eventually are one country we will have one stronger military, one stronger economy, and one stronger presence. All the major wars have started in europe, so wwhy why not try to stop this by talking away the countrys that fight and making one instead. seems a good idea to me.
Ireland would want to keep its neutrality other countrys dislike each other over past grievences too much to work properly as one state. The government would be a mess as far as elections go and it would bring to much econmic strain on the country when formed. Other countrys would feel intimidated which proberly wouldnt be a good thing. Europe dosnt need to be USA and as far as superpowers go we already are one if an EU member state was attacked the other states wouldnt stand by as it would damage them.

Why be a part of the EU if you can't stand the idea of being one nation? You have to submit your national sovreignty to an international body and its policies, abandon your currency and pool your rescources to be a part of it don't you?

is the EU currently a confederation? I'm not sure if I'm asking it right *rubs head*

Also, it'll happen eventually. As technology and communication get better and better, nations grow larger.
In practice the EU is more like a confederacy, IE a league of nations/states that agrees on a few things.

I'd only go with it if we all adopted a singular different currency, had all power held by a single ruling council, and... thats all I can think of for now... *Has headache, can't think straight*

One more step closer to unification...

every major war has come from europe:

imagine if we were one country. sure there would be a chance of civil wars but it would be a uch smaller chance than an international war.

But their civil wars would be as big if not larger then international wars, just no one outside the country would be allowed to interfere. If Poland and France get into a war now, it's international. If the EU was one country, and Poland and France get into a war as states rather than as seperate countries, then it's the same war, but considered a civil war.

Also, if it did happen, say with out civil war, who and how would it be ruled? A rep from each Nation? That would lead to constant rows and nothing would get done. One man? Hello Hitler II!

For those reasons and more; hell to the no!
In the US we have representitves for the states, and shit gets done. So if they put basically the same principal into effect for governing the EU, it wouldn't turn out so bad perhaps.

Even though I mostly agree with how the EU works now I absolutely wouldn't want it to become one nation. There are still a lot of differences between the members and it's plainly impossible to unite the different governmental systems, cultures and laws.

No way, think about how it could affect the game's industry. All you need is one prick from one of the countries who decides (like the laws in Germany) anything with the remotest bit of violence/swearing/implied sex is evil and we're all f*cked up the arse.

I don't think it's very likely to happen, something huge would have to happen to spur it on. I do love the idea though. I think a big problem would be that many of the countries that make up the EU are very different and we all know that as a race, we don't like things that are different. At least the US has the advantage of all speaking the same language.

What's up with all these political threads now anyway?
OT: Indeed, it would be pretty badass to have a European Commonwealth, but it's quite impossible.

I think it will work. France used to be lots of squabling states and they managed to become one country. lets just do that on a larger scale.
Almost every contry in Europe was.

OT:I'm am Israeli, and while the EU and Israel have nuetral to positive connections, the unition of europe might make the USA lose some of it's power, having some of the most power contrys (Britian, France, Germany) together, and the USA is more or less our only way to exsist.
I'm not saying the EU can take over the USA if united, I just say another super-power might over balance the power levels a liitle bit.

Fair point. However, the US is very diffrent from Europe. You dont have the same culture, ethnic, racial and language divides as we have here in Europe. We have the EU now, and they get fuck all done.

I don't think you live here, Federalist92. Because a lot of Europeans don't want Europe to be one nation...
I beg to disagree, I would say that 5 out of 10 people under 20~25 want Europe to be one nation.

Even if the potential power we could have is really cool, I don't think it would work or even be desirable...

In theory this would sound like a good idea to me. United we can be stronger than apart. There will be struggle to implement though. I can see my fellow Dutchmen being hesitant to give up a bit of comfort to even out the differences in lifestyles. There will be too much discontent to make it work for now.

But I like the idea!
