Ive recently noticed that J.R Tolkien isnt the only guy who gets his fantasy world ripped off. The Warhammer Fantasy World, (and even i suppose the 40k universe, but for now we stick with the fantasy)

If you look at some games, especially for the pc, the Warhammer fantasy world gets ripped off so frequently that were it hair, the Gorilla would be bald. I really would wish someone would make a fantasy world where it isnt a rip of Tolkien or Warhammer.
Maybe where the Elves are axe masters and Dwarves reign supreme at stealth, and Chaos were more or less manipulators of the shadow...something different you know?

In any case, the questions/discussion im bringing up right now is-
Which is more frequently ripped off?

and as a sub question :p what would you like to see be completely remodeled/remastered/remade, etc.

Tolkien. Every high fantasy ever takes at least half a page out of his book of tricks.

1. Tolken, no doubt. He is called the father of fantasty for a reason.

2. Stop using the tongue smiley for no reason. It makes you look like another 12 year old on Xbox live.

I would say Tolkien hands down. As for the sub question maybe a fantasy where the dwarfs are not in the midst of either being wiped out or have their empire falling to ruins by either themselves or another force...that is unless there is already one such story and I just haven't seen it or don't remember it right now.

Tolkeins is more frequently "ripepd off", seeing as warhamemr is a tolkien rip-off, and Wh40k is a tolkien "rip-off" in space.

So everything that "rips off" warhammer is also "ripping off" tolkien, as he created fantasy as we know it.
Try looking up elves and dwarves from before tolkien, and you'd se ethey we're a lot different.

Warhammer gets ripped off frequently, but what many people seem to forget is that there's little about the Warhammer universe that isn't ripped off from other sources in the first place (*cough*Moorcock*cough*). So it becomes a bit unclear if something is ripping off Warhammer or if it's just ripping off the same stuff WH ripped off.

Of course one could argue the same is true for Tolkien and his 'ripping off' all kinds of myth and mythology, but since he's regarded as having brought an entire genre into the mainstream you could say that almost every fantasy writer pays homage to him in one way or another.

Tolkien was hardly the first person to write a fantasy novel, he may be arguably the best, but he did not invent elves and dwarves. My point here is not to put Tolkien down, but as hURR dURR dERP (man your name is annoying to type ;-) ) he ripped off his fantasy world and it's inhabitants too!

It does suck that Tolkien's fantasy world got ripped off so much, but it is so in depth and detailed that how can we expect it not to? And by this point all his lore and stereotypes of characters are so well known and established that I suppose we expect certain things, like dwarves to wield axes and elves to be androgenous fairy dandies.
But hey, I'd gladly read a story where a Dwarf was a giant and an Elf was miner or something. Might be interesting.

Tolkein. While a number of things in his books kind of came from default fantasy myths just with a new spin on them (elves being tall, revering nature, naturally good at archery, etc), his kind of fantasy has kind of become the standard.

But hey, if you're going to rip someone off, why not rip off the best?

Don't fix something that isn't broken.

This is one of the reasons I like the Night Angel Trilogy, by Brent Weeks. It's not really ripping off Tolkein, there are only humans. That and it's more or less about Assassin's and what not. But I really enjoyed it.

Actually Terry Pratchett turns a lot of stereotypes around, maybe more games should look to the Discworld for inspiration.

Like to see a game with short evil elves that wear rediculous thick armour or a game that starts a revoloution of new popular breeds of fantasy world characters.

I feel bad for Warhammer. Think about both WoW and Starcraft. BOTH OF THOSE GAMES ripped off of either 40k or Fantasy.

AND WOTLK IS..A..FUCKING..CLONE OF LORD OF THE RINGS!!! A CLONE!

Just spend one minute in Icecrown. One minute, and you can find about 20 different things they ripped off of LoTR.

/endrant.

I don't hate Blizzard, but dayum.

I'd probably say Tolkien. I mean, he created such a large amount of lore in his work, it would be hard for it not to get ripped off.

Speaking of Tolkien...
