I love Doom.

Doom, I suppose. Don't care much for that genre of games, but Doom brought it to prominence.

And then it proceeded to dominate the industry and fill it with copycat garbage.

deffinly counter strike as it was such a basic formula but did it really well and pretty much showed what an online fps could do

Golden Eye is the first majorly Multiplayer FPS...hell me and my friends used to stay up fer the whole weekend blowing each other away...and the setting the "No Odd-job" rule...short lil fucker

For me it was Wolfenstein, and then Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory defined class based shooters, which brought me into online gaming properly. Had a bit of Quake experiance before that though, just found W:ET more fun as I liked the team aspect.

Counter-Strike was my first FPS, so for me it was that one. But we're not talking personal here I guess, so I have no idea =p.

Doom for sure, it had everything modern FPSs do and more.

In terms of defining FPS overall, it would be Doom or Wolfenstein, but for me personally it was Half Life. It was the first FPS I played, and it just opened a whole new world to me, and a whole new genre of games.

It's the one game I always compare other FPS's to, simply because it sticks out in my mind as being the most defining FPS I've played.

Well back in the 2.5D days it was Wolfenstein but now I'd go with Goldeneye.

There are different FPS's that developed the genre, but DOOM started it all off ^_^

As has been mentioned earlier, Doom pretty much made it, Half Life made some important refinements to it, and Halo shaped it.
