They all gave the genre their own little things. Some more than others, but it's built the genre bit by bit.

Wolfenstein. Came before DooM. Had it not been for this game.....there probably would have been another one, but it was still properly the first.

Half-Life why? because its setting is awesome there arent any cutscenes and you can easily see how long it takes (+- 3-2 days) its graphics mightt be dated and there are a bit to many load screens by today,s standards its awesome

Doom is the fundament of horror FPS
The father of shooter with RPG elements is System Shock. From it, great games evolved like Deus Ex.

Well, I don't know what game it is for stealth FPS's o_O'

Well either Doom or CS. Doom was the first FPS and Counter Strike took it in a realistic but awesome direction.

I'm gonna flip a coin... and it's CS for me.

Not in chronological order.

Wolfenstein 3D defines the genre
Quake defines online multiplayer and customize-abilities
Goldeneye defines Split screen multiplayer, and births geddan!
Half-life defines stories telling in FPS,and ramps customize-abilities up to the eleven.
Counterstrike defines competitive online multiplayer

I would perhaps have considered Halo as a flagship game if they had just chosen to stay with Mac. But the dark side dragged them into Xbox. If it were not for Halo i dont believe Xbox would have been as Popular. And if Halo had stayed on Mac people might have realised that making games for Mac (As Halo's early testdays ON MAC showed) could be as graphical if not more than on the PC of its time by a longshot and thus we would have a better gaming desktop today. So if i DONT toss the conspiracy stuff aside Halo helped consoles into the world and them abandoned Mac gave them a huge step backwards as a gaming platform thus earning the Dark Side. "Microsoft" that many more gamers for their PC while other gamers would buy their Console Xbox to play more games.

"Ranting is ranting"

Halflife for showing that modders can change the face of PC Gaming.

Edit: I would never have chosen counterstrike. I know how much i appreciate modders and their work but if i should ever go with CS. Well, i'd just choose halflife again. Without Halflife NO CS without CS. There would still be Halflife.

FPS games are all about multiplayer... so if you ask me, it's Quake. Wolf, Doom and Duke were early experiments... but Quake was far bigger on the net back in 96'. I remember.

Camperfield style games, including CoD and MoH... need to go away so the younglings can see what proper action looks like.

No taking a knee to manage your CoF, no radar, no spotting- just balls out high speed twitch that requires speed-of-thought three dimensional thinking.

...

It would make a lot of kids who thought they knew something about FPS games cry. Part of the reason slowed-down FPS ala BattleField is so popular, it's easy, anyone can play, sells more copies.
