Wolfenstein invented it and DOOM codified it, but Half-life perfected it and created the modern genre. Floating weaspons and power-ups? Gone. 60 MPH running speed? Gone. Game-breaking shotgun and rocket launcher? Balanced. Without DOOM there would be no serious sam or Goldeneye, but without Half-life, none of those other entries would even exist.

Wolfenstein 3D had the basic archetype ('92)

Doom popularised it.('93)

Quake 2 was the first to have true 3D. ('97)

You could also argue for 3D Monster Maze ('81) being the first 3D maze roving game.

Old arcade shooters/Operation Wolf - Wolfenstein 3D - Doom is my holy trinity that emerged from chaos and showed to mortals the wonders of shooting other's heads off. That was the begining, and not much changed since then really. Probably should save a honorable spot for first Quake as well considering i spent countless hours back in my study days, playing it over schools lan.

Yes. I am familiar with System Shock,(good nod btw) However my thinking is what defined it, and as peoples reception is what defines any game, I couldnt in all honesty say that system shock defined or redefined shooters considering how few copies it sold. Even if it is a near perfect game, couldnt really consider it genera defining, because it wasnt as if system shock changed the genera as a whole, or introduced it to a massive new fanbase.

Doom was the first solid FPS so I'd give it the title, the only other one I'd mention is Wolfenstein - but that's only because it come out first.

Doom started it.
Half Life improved the single player experience.
Counter Strike improved the multiplayer experience.

Overall I say HL2 really defines the FPS today with its nearly perfect story, mechanics, and gameplay.

But for the genre as a whole I think it would be Doom. Whenever I hear the word FPS I think of you shooting monsters in the face with a shotgun.
Doom is awesome....

Maybe, but you can't say the same about Deus Ex. That game sold fairly well, developed a pretty strong fan base, had one sequel released and has another on the way.

There's a few games which serve as major leaps in the public perception of the FPS.

Wolf3D came before Doom, but I think Doom was the game that really sold the masses on the FPS concept. Hell, it's still fun to play now.

Halo is the one that sold the idea of consoles being a good FPS platform.

Half-life is the one that innovated the process of keeping the game going in real-time and having things happen to you instead of breaking away to cinematic cutscenes.

Counter-Strike is a twofer: it showed us what a sufficiently talented mod team can make from an existing FPS, and it revolutionized objective-based team multiplayer.

It's a little early to tell, but I'm going to go ahead and predict that Left4Dead is the one that'll be seen as revolutionizing co-op play.

It wasn't the first, but I think Goldeneye revolutionized the genre and set the bar that others had to meet.

If by defined you mean had the biggest influence, then it would definetly be Doom, followed by Goldeneye and Halo.

Different hallmarks for different parts of the genre. It's not as clear-cut that there is 1, big overarching game that defined it all.

There were multiple games that each added something to the table.

For example:
- Wolfenstein 3D put the genre on the map.
- Doom revolutionised level design.
- Quake made multi-player FPS a big thing.
- Half Life revolutionised storytelling.
- GoldenEye 007 defined console FPS'.

And one can go on listing games for being minor landmarks and perfecting certain things, like Halo really making console FPS popular, things like that.

Que? Yeah I know what Doom did for the genre, but I'm not qúite sure about the latter part of your statement.

Deus Ex is a good nod as well, but its impact on the genera was somewhat limited. To date it has sold 1 million copies. Its sequel didn't top half. Where as Bioshock 1 by its self to date has sold 4 million copies. Thing about Deus Ex, another example of a great game, but its main innovative hook was the freedom to approach situations in multiple ways, However that is not a mechanic that has changed the way that shooters are made, as of yet. Perhaps the upcoming one will accomplish this.
