My gf is a gaming n00b all around, for the most part.

Until we put in Contra. We're both equally awesome at that.

My wife's first console was the PSone, after the Dualshock controller came out. Since my first console (after a Sega Master System that died in 1989) was the PS2 I bought in 2002, my wife had about 3 or 4 years on me when it came to dual-thumbstick action.

She > me at Halo 3 multiplayer.

I don't have a problem with the 2nd stick, I just don't usually enjoy FPS titles unless they also have a good story to them (I hate multiplayer and refuse to buy a mediocre game just because its multiplayer is good). Still, I've played Halo with a few hardcore guy friends before and came out on top quite a few times. It's not too difficult for me.

Well, you've failed at that. People are people, and sex doesn't effect anyone's abilities to use a damn controller, save actual medical reasons or the way society expects certain people to behave.
Do you have an actual hypothesis? If so, is it that women are naturally different gamers, or is it a societal issue? Bein

Really? I've haven't read about this before. I'm a girl and have had no problem. Sure I may have had a slight difficultly using it the first hour of picking up a controller for the first time ever but now it is just second nature.

Apparently I have to say this again, I have no want to bring down anyone's pride of their skills.

I was just curious, as is the HUMAN condition, as to whether others had noticed this or had experienced it themselves either to this day or when they first started gaming. It is not a documented thing or any sort of 1950's bring women down bullshit, I'm all for female gamers and equality which is why I felt in this day and age it would be okay to ask this. Despite equality there are still differences between men and women that are not debatable, particularily in brain chemistry due the different balances of hormones, as such I wasn't sure if this was just coincidentally localized event or a common thing. Results so far stand to say it's about equal with a slight leaning towards women having no problem with it, though I plan to keep close watch and see how the poll and posts develop. For one last point that people egregiously overlooked from my original post the idea of women having trouble with the 2nd stick in my hypothesis is accompanied by innate ability with 2d genres particularily ones that require extremely fast thinking, I at no point thought the 2nd stick issue as a detriment but rather just inversion of certain thinking pattern (i.e. not a positive or negative thing rather a trade off if you will).

I certainly hope this puts to rest any negative assumptions that may be had with my simple question.

I work fine with two sticks, and I'm a girl. I've never had a problem with it.
Also, when getting a new games console, I've adapted very quickly too the new controller... Just saying.

Although, when I play games against my boyfriend, I tend too fail hard. I can grasp what too do easily, I'm just not very good until I've been playing a game for over two days/three days.

I don't know why that is... Too be honest.

My mom once tried to play Halo 2 a couple years ago. She also had lots of trouble with the right stick as well.

never had a problem with them in the slightest.....but then again the amount of different types of controllers I've gone through from consoles dating to the mid-late 70's sorta forces one to adapt really quick,

I have noticed my sister's tendency to look at the sky whenever I give her the controller.

Don't feed the feminist, no matter how politely you say it, to question them is to be sexist.

One thing i just noticed is that most of the women who voted - said that they were really good at FPS

Which leads me to believe that most women are also liars

I've noticed that my girlfriend has a bit of difficulty using the right analog stick in first person shooters, especially those that also require the use of the face buttons.
Why?
Her hands are too short, in particular her thumbs. This is for the 360; she has no issues with the PS3. So in that case, it would be a physiological difference.

Those first days, everyone sucks. I can take my FPS skills across the board into all different games, but since none of them agree on the reload/switch weapon button placements, you still tend to screw up a bit. And then there's thumb stick sensitivity, memorizing which weapon does what, etc.
Simply put, most games require some practice to get good at.

Also, I don't know if that's really a true. Perhaps a woman has a bit more of a curve to overcome than a guy based on societal norms of girls not playing anything not made by Popcap, but that is simply learning to play games in general and everyone went through that phase. Guys just tend to go through it at an age when they have all of their "Figuring shit out" phases from school to chores to music, and thus don't treat it as an issue.

Most of the time, it's just practice. My girlfriend loves Mortal Kombat- kicks my ass most of the time. On the otherhand, my friend John and I regularly make other people refuse to play us at Soul Caliber IV- we're simply that evil, and I'm not talking about the stuff that's broken by design.

This is NOT a gender war issue, this is an overall learning curve issue.

I've put a bunch of control schemes in front of a bunch of non-gamers, and to a person, they had trouble with the dual analog sticks. Women, men, WoW players, ten-year-old girls, grandparents, everyone. The darn things are just not intuitive at all.

If you want to get more people playing your favorite first-person game, you need an effective tutorial that eases people into this strange, unnatural way of movement. You probably couldn't drive a car the minute you stepped into the driver's seat either, and that was a substantially less arbitrary movement system (because you use your feet to go forward and back).

Well after a day of this thread being up we've learned some interesting things.

- Things seem to be basically equal in terms of the poll with a slight lean towards females having better skills.

- The majority of posters attribute it a sociological thing rather than genetic.

- Females poll seem to be very polarized on the issue (leaning to being either amazing at two stick games or admitting trouble with them) which is odd seeing as how the poll from the men's side and the posts so far from both sides suggest there should be many more for the female middle ground option.

While not exactly subtle and a little assuming there may be a point here.

- The topic has elicited a defense for female gamers in general (which I would like to remind everyone is not the point here) rather then the opinion on the two stick issue.

People are often bringing up 2d genres or pc games which I stated earlier in the second half of my hypothesis that female gamers having trouble with two sticks succeeded and thrived in an environment with out need of them.

Conclusion so far:

While initial intent to this post may have been misunderstood by some voters it has in general raised some interesting points and gathered needed data. The basic understanding right now is that things seem to be equal but shakily so. More data is needed.

I plan to keep watching this thing to end so please keep voting, posting, and in general voicing your opinions as it has and is providing for me and hopefully for you a very enlightening experience.

You're right, it doesn't.
It's called a stereotype. Purely social side effect, doesn't have anything to do with individuals. That's like saying all gamers are excessively violent towards other people.
