Seriously? Tobey Maguire looked so apathetic and it shows in the third film, at least that was the impression I got.

Andrew Garfield is a fan and he knows the character very well, he nailed it as Peter and Spider-Man. Also the guy looks a bit like him.

While I don't dislike Tobey Maguire I think he was badly cast as Peter Parker. I disliked his stupid expressions, his silly dancing, his emo looks, he was not funny as Spidey should be...

I haven't seen the new movie as it seems quite boring though and I still don't think Andrew Garfield is the perfect Spidey as I always though about Spidey as slightly older and more muscular, like in the 90s cartoon. He's much better though, all things considered.

Tobey was all right as Peter as least he seemed nerdy. Garfield was a much better spiderman though mainly because he was a smartass like spider man should be.

I thought Andrew Garfield did better, Tobey was too bitchy/whiny.

I love that Spidey was a bit of a smartass in this film, that's how he should be.

I always liked that Peter Parker became Spider-Man by accident not because it was meant to be or whatever.

I agree, mabye its because of some inferiority complex deep down but I for some reason I don't like it when people are "born" that way

Toby did his job fairly, but I have to give it up for Garfield. He nailed the outcast thing and gave a certain youth to the character that McGuire was neglecting.

Also, he didn't dance on the street and play jazz music.

I think that Toby fit the spirit of Spiderman better. His Spiderman was a lot more campy, and the fact that it's obvious he didn't really put all that much effort into his acting was a bit of a bonus for the movie because it allowed the movie to be the colorful campy affair it's supposed to be.

The new movie is trying to be too gritty, and it doesn't fit Spiderman at all. While Spiderman's life can be rather depressing, and tragic even in parts, it's not dark, and it's not gritty. I think Garfield is putting a lot more effort into the role then McGuire ever did, and I really do enjoy his acting, but the writers did not nail Spiderman in this movie, and my extension to that neither did Garfield (although the addition of jokes and quips was definitely in the right direction and something that was sorely missing from Raimi's series of movies).

Tobey Maguire is one of the best actors of the last ten years, so I'd have to say him, but I havn't seen the new film and I don't remember ever seeing Garfield in anything so he may surprise me.

But I really don't think this can live up to the older spiderman films (well maybe the third one)

Not that I wanted the Raimi movies to continue, because it was fairly obvious that by the third movie everyone involved was kinda done with it.
I think they were actually trying to lead into a fourth film but that plan was cancelled after the bad reception of 3
there is no 4th spider man because sam ramie wanted a certain main villain and the studio big wigs wanted a different one (i think the lizard). so through frustration sam left and did ''drag me to hell''.....im pretty sure thats the right timeline.

I do prefer one aspect of Toby over Andrew and that's his relationship with Mary Jane.
I know that doesn't have much to do with the portrayal itself, but it just seems that Andrew's Peter had more of an aura of "I don't want to talk to anybody," whereas Tobey had and aura of "nobody wants to talk to me," which, for me, made the M. Jane relationship much more meaningful than the G. Stacy one.
I know the "I don't want to talk to anybody" vs. "nobody wants to talk to me" thing sort of sounds semantic, so I guess a better way to word it is that I think Tobey was better at the socially awkward thing.

The part when (Andrew's) Peter is trying to ask Gwen out was pretty good, and pretty funny.

And if nothing else, that's a saving grace for Andrew right there.

I think they should've waited another 10 years for another Spiderman. But I have to give it a chance first. Especially since I'm such a fan of Spiderman so I'll probably see it. I like Emma Stone but idk why she couldn't play Mary Jane and not Gwen Stacey.

Because Peter Parkers first love interest was with Gwen, not Mary Jane

After seeing the movie today, I definitely prefer The Amazing Spiderman character better. He's 20% asshole, 40% smug, 10% emotional crap, 30% cocky.

I feel that Toby Mcguire did a better job at what he was doing. There was a lot more emotional stuff happening in the spiderman movies, something Andrew Garfield couldn't pull off.

As spiderman Andrew Garfield was far more cocky and it made the movie kinda funny to watch. BUT, I couldn't bear to see Andrew Garfield be all sad and emotional because, in my opinion, he does a bad job of it, something Toby Mcguire did well.

Copy and paste the Amazing Spiderman (attitude and all, with Andrew Garfield attached) into the previous movies and they would be better than before...Though I'm not sure much can be done about Spiderman 2...That one's a train wreck.

I'll give them this much liking-ness:
Andrew Garfield 55%
Toby Mcguire 45%

EDIT:

Regarding lizard...Why is his face so flat, looks like he was thrown at a brick wall or something!?

I think Garfield did a slightly better job overall, although I still can't buy that someone who looks like Andrew Garfield is the "bullied nerd" in high school. Overall, I'd say:

Garfield > Toby

Green Goblin >>> The Lizard

Emma Stone >>>>> Kirsten Dunst

I don't get it why they restarted the series so soon. Mcguire should have done a couple of more films.

I liked the Spiderman trilogy. I have yet to see the new one, so I can't really say one way or the other. But I never did see the point of making a new one so soon.

Although the new one has Denis Leary, so it might change my mind.

I heartily enjoyed the new Spider-Man. It's a nice and fresh reinterpretation of the source material, including a setting and events more in tune with the modern world we live in today, most of the characters are well-developed, the action and acrobatics are absolutely fantastic, I freakin' love the new costume design, and they finally gave Spidey his trademark wisecracks.
And what the hell's wrong with the darker vibe? While I enjoy most of the comic book movies out there, many of them are outright campy, and a movie that doesn't slavishly adhere to the camp factor of its source material is a welcome breeze of fresh air.
