Well I would say the Adeptus Astartes simply because they have the technology, they have more than enough power in their soldiers, they have psykers and they have some pretty skilled tacticians.
For the Emperor!
Space Marines will destroy everything. If you read the backstory about their genetic engineering you can see just how powerful they are.
Except that the Adeptus Astartes is a precision tool for specific occasions, they don't have the numbers to be deployed in every occasion. It's the Imperial Guard with their pure weight of numbers and masses of heavy equipment that keep the Imperium going.
Now if ya generalised it to the Imperium of Man, that gives ya all of the Adeptus (Astartes, Sororitas etc), the Guard, Titan legions, Inquisition, everything. After all it's all the armed forces of the emperor :p

Think I'll go with that under High Tech Other lol
Mid tech I'd go with the Colonial Marines (USMC Aliens on the list, there's just summut about them I like)
Low Tech I'll take Ancient Rome (Always a good choice and something that always peaked my interest)
That's 2 from the list and one other, that'll do :p

Edit: I see in typing that lot out I was beaten to it lol
I was gonna put imperium of man but then I changed it to suit the quote :p
But yeah I know Space Marines are shock troops and there's one for every imperium planet or so they say...

I said Other, Cuz I would vote for S.V.E.R from M.A.G
As for why, They seem to be a bunch of round up fighters (they kindof are) but it works, works well at that, And S.V.E.R doesn't give up they will fight till the end.

Yeah like their rib cages being solid fused plates of bone that are infused with ultra reinforcing chemicals, wounds sealing themselves in seconds, backup internal organs and much much more.
And they can change their saliva to acid at will. And the fact their Boltguns fire mini self-propelled rockets that penetrate the target and then explode.

Mongols. Conquered most of what was then the known world, vastly expanded trade, advanced military in ways then never seen (stirrups for one) practically invented biological warfare. I think they take the cake.

the Amestrian army, they are quite adept at fighting as they have numbers and then the elite troopers like say the tanks and finally you had alchemists who would wipe out many hundreds of enemy foot soldiers, plus it seemed very well organised

Biggest is a fact, greatest is an opinon.
The British Empire was larger, for one.

I'd vote for none of the examples you've selected because none of which are really comparable. Also the example you've given in the Blackwatch makes my skin crawl, less soldiers than sociopaths.

I'd also like to point out that some of these armies, such as the Romans, were only as good as their leadership and discipline. Look at the lost legions of in the Teutoburg forest for a good example.

It mostly comes down to experience for your troops and good, insightful leadership for your generals to make a good army.

But to be on topic I'd choose the Space Marines from 40k for high tech, Mid tech I can't really choose, though out of your options I'd select the ALIENS marines and for low tech? Well, I can't really decide here either, but probably the Romans.

many typos there my friend..

I pick the Wehrmacht, Imperial Guard, Necromungas, Crusade-era Islamic forces, The Alliance (Firefly), the Colonial-era British Army and the Spartans (historical ones mind you, not that 300 bullshit)

I pick them because they are my favourite military forces. No other reason..

United States Colonial Marines. There, I fixed it :D
Your half right. During the movie they are the United States Marice Core, But in the comic books and novels, during the Alien Infestation of earth, all military grouped up to the United System Marine Core.
You may want to see Aliens one more time :D
Oh... Obivous fail on my part. woops.
Now i feel stupid.
I thought they were just the Colonial Marines?

The Imperium of man is great and everything, but what about their plucky Chaos cousins? Near total control of the warp and daemons have to count for something, right (not to mention better space marines!)?

In relation to other armies of their time, the legions of Rome are unmatched. They were the first army with full-time soldiers who were usually land owners meaning they had something to lose if they were defeated. Unlike the greeks, they had no rules of war and fought harder knowing that if they were captured they wouldn't be treated well. They were formation fighters (like the Macedonian phalangists who were at their best when in the phalanx formation and weren't as good in 1v1) who put their army over themselves. They had their equipment given to them, which included mail armor in the earlier periods but later they got iron plate armor (the lorica segmentata, though not as good as knightly plate, it was at least as strong as other armor of the time and was still light enough to keep them mobile).

Most modern troops have no major advantage over others and are closely matched. The Roman army outclassed most all other armies of its day (which were usually soldiers only part-time).
